Texas Freepers - Information Please!
Me ^ | 4/18/02 | CyberCowboy77

Texas Freepers! I am considering re-locating to Texas from Washington. I want a change in weather, people and politics.

I have lived all across the U.S. but never Texas. Can you give me some ideas as to where to live, Pro's and Cons of Texas?

I am really thinking Houston - I want to be near the Coast. (or at least 2 hours away).

I will want to own at least 5 acres. And my brother and Parents are thinking of moving there as well and will need land as well.

I have three boys and a Wife. I am a Computer Consultant by trade (my father is a programmer and we have our own company here).

I do not care about schools as I will be Home Schooling when my boys are older.

Any info will be greatly appreciated!

I was born in Houston and visit there often because my brother and his family live there. It is very crowded, hot, and humid!

Corpus Christi has the heat and humidity, but is much less crowded and has nice public beach areas.

Austin is a neat town with lots of things to do. So is San Antonio. Fort Worth is a great place to live. Dallas is very cosmopolitan (at least in certain areas) but is becoming very crowded.

My wife and I lived in Rockwall for awhile and it's nice. Great lake and the smallest county in the state. Only problem??? Too many Texans live there. LOL

A man decides to visit every church in America. He starts in New York. The first church he visits has a telephone in the back of the church. It has a sign above it that says "Call Heaven, $10,000.00 per minute".

As he travels around the country he sees the same telephone and sign, "Call Heaven, $10,000.00 per minute". The last state he visits is Texas. In the first Texas church he sees the same telephone and sign but the sign says "Call Heaven, $.10 per minute". The same thing happens in every Texas church.

The last church he visits is in Galveston, Texas. He sees the preacher and explains about the signs and asks "why is it only ten cents a minute per call to Heaven in Texas?

The preacher smiles and says "Because, my son, here it's a local call".

Well, first off, "Houston" and "5 acres of land" do not belong together in the same sentence.

You'd actually LOVE Tejas, but you need to go there and spend some time getting to know the state. It is, as they say, like a "whole other country." Or, in Tejano, "A Whole 'Nuther Country."

Texas, by size, is actually a "region," with lots of different types of topography and a similarly-large gaggle of great, but each totally different, cities. Houston is totally unlike Dallas. Ft. Worth is worlds apart from both Dallas and Houston. Most of the state is VERY conservative, but Austin, the capital, is flaming liberal.

Most of the beaches are hot, brown sand, except South Padre way down south off the Rio Grande Valley.

No two places are the same - and the disparity is even greater in Texas. I think it's ALL great, but each place is different. I miss it.

Lived in Beaumont, Texas until I was eighteen. Stay away from Southeast Texas. They vote Democrat and they are as thick as a brick there. About 75% of the footage from COPS comes from that region of Texas. Jasper and Vidor are also nearby -- huge KKK region of the state. Austin is my favorite city in the state then Dallas. Houston is ok if you like traffic jams and pollution.

My husband and I live in Corpus Christi. The up side? It's a tough job, living in Paradise. But someone's gotta do it! We raise bananas, tomatoes, peppers, and mangoes in our back yard almost year 'round. The cost of real estate is cheap. The down side? The propery taxes are sky-high and it's run pretty much like a Third World country - but, they do leave you alone.

2 words ---- Hill Country

Anywhere around Austin, San Antonio: Marble Falls, Llano, New Braunfels, Georgetown. Austin is the place for computer people. The yuppies are a little irritating tho.

You might like the Conroe area if you want a little space. It is north of Houston.
Go to realtor.com and check out prices of homes with acreage in the area. Lot's of tall pine trees.

The New Braunfels-Seguin Area is beautiful and about two and a half hours from the beach at Mustang Island. The Guadalupe and Comal rivers are great places to spend a HOT summer day and if it is a big city you or your family crave San Antonio is close and big enough for all your big city needs
IMHO.

Industry is mostly port-related (6th largest port in the country) and oil companies. There's a big push to give the tourist industry a "kick start" by redoing the bayfront/marina/downtown (yes, it's all the they're same place!) area. Salaries aren't the highest here, but the cost of living (real estate taxes aside) is lower than most of the country. I've lived in lots of areas that are worse. Oh - we also have one college (Del Mar) and one university (Texas A&M - Corpus). If you have a master's, they are ALWAYS begging for adjunct faculty in almost every area.
