Yeah, I saw that at the top of the hour. I know a couple of years ago he had testicular cancer. He was really good in Lonesome Dove as Jake Spoon.

I liked his work. My prayers go to his family. May he rest in peace. Here's his webpage, The Official Robert Urich Website

I guess I should correct myself about what type of cancer he had. His site states that he had Synovial Cell Sarcoma. Being that I'm not Trapper John, M.D., I don't know what that even means. But, it's sad that he's passed.

Indeed its sad when to see him pass away. He was the modern Cary Grant. Suave, debonair, charming, with a wit that sparkled on the camera. He never let the cancer that took his life get the best of him. Robert Urich is one with the ages now.

Excuse me, but didn't he play some sort of Communist in that film "Amerika"?

I just saw him on a TV movie--very recent release.
Something about Wolves; he played a ranch hand. Put on some weight, but looked healthy. Seemed like a nice guy.
It makes one wonder why someone like him passes--when jerks like Alec Baldwin remain.

I should add I liked his role in Spenser For Hire when he played the leading man detective. He couldn't have asked for a better opponent in Avery Brooks' being cast as Hawk. It lasted only three seasons, a pity which was his best work ever. Barbara Stock was a nice touch as girlfriend Susan Silverman. He played Jake Spoon in Lonesome Dove but I think Spenser was the highlight of his career as an actor. Robert Urich was just the kind of man who was difficult to typecast with a particular role as the above examples illustrate. He had a passion for doing about ANY work Hollywood offered. Its hard to recall someone who had the kind of likeability on camera he did.

Makes you wonder why the jerks remain around but the gentleman legends literally go before our eyes. And he was not even 60 when he died.

His site states that he had Synovial Cell Sarcoma.

Don't know much about this guy, but aren't sarcomas often a disease associated with AIDS?

For your information he was a married man. Have you checked out his website? I wouldn't wish cancer on any one and I lost my mother to it. Its incredible some people can be so insensitive to others' suffering. Robert Urich and his family deserved a lot better than the ordeal he went through.

In 1996, following the final production of the first season of The Lazarus Man, Robert was diagnosed with Synovial Cell Sarcoma, which is a rare soft tissue cancer. He underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation for eight months. During treatment, he spoke very publicly about his cancer.

Robert has been awarded many honors including the Gilda Radner Courage Award from the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Urich continues to do a speaking tour throughout the United States, and he has publicly spoken more than 45 times to over 200,000 people across the country. The audiences range from Cancer Support Groups to Fortune 500 Companies. He has been featured on Primetime Live interviewed by Dianne Sawyer, and has appeared Extra, Oprah, The Today Show, Good Morning America and Larry King Live. He had been a frequent guest on The Tonight Show, Late Night with David Letterman, The Conan O’Brien Show, Live with Regis, and The View.

He currently resides in Ventura County, California with his wife and three children, Ryan, Emily, and Allison.

Synovial sarcoma is a rare soft-tissue sarcoma with features of epithelial differentiation. In contrast with its name, synovial sarcoma is not associated with synovial joints. It tends to arise in younger patients with a mean age of approximately 30 years.

Problem: Synovial sarcoma is a high-grade tumor but typically is associated with a history of a long-standing nodule, sometimes present for years, which has increased rapidly in size over a few months. Therefore, it is sometimes overlooked. The tumor spreads along fascial planes and, thus, can be much more widespread than apparent on initial evaluation.

Frequency:

Synovial sarcoma is rare, representing approximately 5-10% of all soft-tissue sarcomas.

Approximately 800 new cases occur in the United States per year.

Females are more commonly affected than males.
Etiology: Synovial sarcoma is characterized by a specific chromosomal translocation t(X;18)(p11;q11) that is observed in more than 90% of cases. This defect appears to be the underlying cause of the tumor, although how the resulting fusion protein leads to transformation is poorly understood.

Clinical: Synovial sarcoma usually presents within the first 3 decades of life and generally is associated with a history of a small nodule that has increased rapidly in size. The mass often is painful and is located deep. Most commonly, it is situated around the knee, but it also can appear in the hands and feet.

Some sarcomas are. The AIDS related type is called Kaposi's sarcoma. I have never heard of using chemotherapy or radiation therapy on a patient with AIDS. A person would die, as the body couldn't heal. This explains the types of soft tissue sarcoma better than I can, Understanding soft tissue sarcomas.

You're thinking of Karposi's sarcoma, it can be associated with HIV.

However, my father in law has been dealing with a kind of sarcoma for a few years, and he definitely does not have AIDS.

Very sad to hear this. My brother and sister-in-law had recently been helped by Robert Urich. Synovial cancer is extremely rare and they consulted him on latest treatments after my brother's recurrence 17 years after his leg was amputated at age 21.
