POLL ANALYSES April 10, 2002

Bush's Job Approval Rating at 76%
Public's rating varies by political affiliation

GALLUP NEWS SERVICE

PRINCETON, NJ – George W. Bush's current job approval rating stands at 76%, his lowest rating since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The rating represents a continuation of the gradual decline in Bush's job approval observed since his high point of 90% in September, but it is still significantly higher than any approval rating recorded for Bush prior to the attacks.

George W. Bush’s Job Approval Rating

The decline in Bush's overall job approval rating can be attributed to changes in the opinions of Democrats, and to a lesser extent, political independents. Following the Sept. 11 attacks, Democratic opinion of how Bush was handling his job soared by more than 50 points. Over the last six months, Bush's ratings among Democrats have decreased from the mid-80s to the middle to low 60s. A similar pattern exists among independents, whose approval rating for Bush has decreased from the high 80s to the middle to low 70s in the last six months. Bush's rating among Republicans remains in the middle 90s, where it has been since September.

Survey Methods

These results are based on telephone interviews with a randomly selected national sample of 1,009 adults, aged 18 and older, conducted April 5-7, 2002. For results based on this sample, one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum error attributable to sampling and other random effects is ±3%. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of public opinion polls.

Interesting with all the sniping at Bush by conservatives that the Republican approval level has barely budged.

It's also interesting to note that Bush's support among Republicans is near 100%. You wouldn't know that by all the sniping in this forum at Bush. The support among Independents is near 75%. If this holds, it won't matter if Democrat support goes down to zero.

I don't know. He still has a 70% approval from Democrats. I see what looks like the beginning of a plateau in his approval rating...instead of a nose dive it looks more like a gentle landing.

This is another piece of poll BS. With a +/- 3% MOE, Bush's job approval rating could be 79%, essentially unchanged from last week.

Gallup tried to pull this trick a month ago, when they and USA Today ran the screaming headlines "BUSH APPROVAL DROPS BELOW 80% FOR FIRST TIME!!!!". But once you looked at the MOE, it showed there was no change in his approval at all. And sure enough, one week later the next Gallup poll showed Bush back at 80%. But of course, there was no major news coverage of that one.

Yes, but when you consider that CNN is Gallup's polling partner, you'll understand why the language is slanted so negatively. CNN has been sounding the klaxon all day on this and the current Generic Congressional Poll which has the Dems at 50% to the GOP's 43%. In light of events and Dubya's numbers, the only way to 'splain the Congressional Generic numbers are loaded polling techniques.

This afternoon, Judy Ruff-Ruff glommed onto the numbers and started pumping Jeff Greenfield to tell her NOW, THIS MINUTE, how many more Demos would be elected this fall than Republicans. Greenfield wouldn't budge, and Ruff-Ruff was chagrined.

hey, you know... I waz just thunking of sumfin...

I've been thunking.... what would a democRAT do to get control of Congress? START WWIII and blame BUSH!

1) so... the economy goes sour, try to blame Bush - but tax stimulus reinvigorates economy and oil prices drop, again helping the economy. This attack fails.

2) Call Bush stupid - but then September 11th happens and we see Georeg for who he is - a man of principles, conviction, and straight talk.

3) All other attacks failing, since the democRATS are in tight with the Palestinians - ask Yassar to sacrifice a few kids with bomb belts - piss off the Israelis (Bush is too successful in Afghanistan) - and then Attack the Bush administration for it's Jeffersonian (hands-off) approach to Mid-East Policy.

so, as Hillary would say... it's all a vast left-wing conspiracy, aided by stooges in the liberal media, to instigate WWIII so that they can blame Bush and take control of Congress.

Do you think those sniping are really Republicans? They are neo-con RINOs.

loaded polling techniques? You bet you're ass! But think about it rationally... No Prez gets astronomical ratings unless there has been something huge. ie. 91 Gulf, or Sept 11. What I love is that it is now 4/10/02. It's been a while since 9/11/01, and our boy Bush is, in relation to any other prez, knocking them dead with, at the least, a 76% approval rating!!!!!!!!! It's outstanding.

Yup, W. is repeating the same patterns of his Poppy ("read my lips, no new taxes" and "read my lips, no CFR")...

His betrayal of Israel and embrace of Arafat may be the final straw. I don't think it is too late to turn things around. Fire Powell, make Rumsfeld Sec of State.

Can we please craft a plan to oust them from this site. The fact is though, they can bitch all the way to 2008, and then, maybe, we will care to defend.

He backed Amnesty for the terrorists.

Laughable statements like this only make Bush's opposition look pathetic.
