California will ban evictions for unpaid rent through the end of September and pay off all back rent for eligible tenants under a deal announced Friday by Gov. Gavin Newsom and legislative leaders. California banned evictions after Newsom imposed the nation's first statewide shutdown in March 2020 and ordered most businesses to close and people to stay home to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Those protections are scheduled to expire on Wednesday. The new agreement will extend the eviction moratorium through Sept. 30.

This is what happens when you allow Democrats to rule your state — complete and utter lawlessness. For those not familiar with the State of Washington, it is like many Democrat-ruled states — they’ve taken over the big cities — like locusts — but the rural parts are quite conservative. Here, from an upscale suburb of Seattle, about 45 minutes from the Democrat dystopia, depending on traffic, comes this CRAZY story that should not happen in a civilized country (emphasis added): A multimillion-dollar home in Sammamish is at the center of an ongoing investigation, as squatters continue to break in...
  • Will the Supreme Court Overturn the Infamous Takings Decision of Kelo v. City of New London?

In the infamous case of Kelo v. City of New London, the Supreme Court allowed the city of New London, Connecticut to take Susette Kelo’s little pink house (also the name of a very good movie about the case) via eminent domain for the “public use” of furthering economic development in the town’s Fort Trumbull neighborhood. The fight in that case was over the meaning of the words “public use” in the Fifth Amendment’s Takings Clause, and whether the words provide essentially any limit on what a municipality or legislature says is “public use.” In Kelo, one of the major...

New York (CNN Business)It's been nine years since Michael Robinson of Columbus, Ohio, nearly lost a major part of his family's legacy. He's still fighting to regain full control of it. In 2012, the 57-year-old married father of four, who is Black, found out someone he'd never met named James E. Deshler II was suing his family members to force them to sell their portion of the 127 acres of Barlow Bend, Alabama, farmland that they'd inherited from Robinson's late grandfather, Joe Ely. The local county auditor's website determined last year that the land is worth more than $212,000. The...

In 2017, I moved 15 minutes north of my prior home in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles to Santa Clarita. We decided to keep that home as a rental property, so I prepared it for the rental market. While we certainly hoped to be making some money beyond our monthly mortgage/tax/insurance expenses, that amount would not exceed more than a few hundred dollars. After listing the house we received a great deal of interest, most of which we ignored, such as the inquiry from a group of college-aged guys we expected would turn it into a party...

Looks like it's not just mansions for smooth operator Patrisse Cullors, who co-founded Black Lives Matter. She's also into stretches at luxury resorts, with some very curious accounting. According to an investigative report from the Daily Caller:Los Angeles-based jail reform group led by BLM co-founder Patrisse Cullors spent nearly $26,000 for “meetings” at a luxury Malibu beach resort in 2019, according to campaign finance records reviewed by the Daily Caller News Foundation. The records show that the payments were made on behalf of the jail reform group by a consulting firm owned by Asha Bandele, a longtime mentor of Cullors and co-author...

Previously overlooked real-estate markets brace for the ‘New American Consumer’Home prices are rising across the country as Americans rush to purchase houses, driven in part by a newfound ability to work remotely as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. But where are they set to rise the most? Not in the Sun Belt, by and large, according to a new index. The Emerging Housing Markets Index from the Wall Street Journal and Realtor.com analyzed the 300 largest metropolitan areas across the country. Each housing market was evaluated based on a range of factors related to real estate, economic vitality and...

So, you and your spouse are living in a medium-sized middle American community and after coming into a little extra money you decided you want to do some planning for your retirement. You come across an investment opportunity in a cosmopolitan city in another state — a six-unit apartment building where you can purchase a co-ownership interest with a plan to move into that building when you retire. The purchase agreement includes a provision that the co-owners will convert the six-unit building into separately owned condominium units by a specified date, and you and your spouse will obtain the right...

For a “trained Marxist,” Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors has very expensive taste in homes, which is pretty characteristic for “Marxists.” However, the backlash coming at her for her purchases is mounting, and now one of her old rivals, a New York activist, is demanding she be audited.According to the Daily Caller, Hank Newsome is the leader of an organization called “Black Lives Matter Greater New York, which is unaffiliated with the Black Lives Matter national movement. Cullors has sent Newsome cease-and-desist letters telling him to stop using the BLM name for his organization, but even Black Lives Matter...

Kudos to Andrew Kerr of the Daily Caller News Foundation for digging up documents filed with the state of California that reveal some of the big bucks that Patrisse Cullors, aka Patrisse Khan Cullors, has raked in to help pay for her amazing real estate buying binge. So far, she her spouse Janaya Khan have reportedly laid out $3.2 million for four properties across the United States, including a hideaway in lily white Topanga Canyon, suitable for watching rioters burn urban neighborhoods in complete safety.Other black activists have been outraged and calling for investigations into where the $90 million reportedly...

Social media censorship is escalating and ever more blatant. Unfettered knowledge is dangerous to the phony narratives that progressives wish to brainwash the public into accepting, and with social media, the blockade imposed by mainstream media potentially can be breached by people posting otherwise obscure media sources to their social media accounts. The latest prominent victim is Jason Whitlock, originally a sportswriter but now a social critic who brings insightful commentary on many issues, including race. (For the record, Whitlock is Black, a fact that seems to make a difference to most people on the left.)Yesterday, Jason Whitlock posted a...

The IRS is mailing out “probably thousands” of threatening letters that warn taxpayers their property is about to be seized for unpaid taxes — even though the government already got its money, The Post has learned. The scary situation is the latest snafu involving the hated agency, which last year issued similarly baseless threats to confiscate state tax refunds to cover purportedly unpaid federal taxes, CNBC reported at the time. That blunder came after House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) in August called on the IRS to stop sending out notices for unpaid taxes because it had...

How do we effectively fight to restore private property, and our freedom of movement in America? Most think that just getting a president elected is the answer, but what if we lose that race? Or, what if we win the Presidency but lose the House of Representatives and the Senate? What chance do we then have to make any progress in protecting liberty? We have to live in the days after an election. We have to make our way forward in our lives. So, do we simply surrender and accept our fate? Or do we create a new path to...

The increasing encroachment of government regulations, pontificating politicians and the enforcement of Social Justice schemes have led to a loss of understanding of the terms private property and property rights. Once it was understood that the unauthorized entering of private property was a violation to the utmost. The property owner was justified and supported in taking necessary actions to remove the trespasser and secure that land. Today, such ideas in the new America are considered radical, old fashioned, out of touch, and even reprehensible. The homeowner can be arrested for defending against an armed intruder. The intruder can actually sue...

Most Americans tend to think of private property simply as a home – the place where the family resides, store their belongings and find shelter and safety from the elements. It’s where you live. It’s yours because you pay the mortgage and the taxes. Most people don’t give property ownership much more thought than that. There was a time when property ownership was considered to be much more. Property, and the ability to own and control it, was life itself. The great economist, John Locke, whose writings and ideas had major influence on the nation’s founders, believed that “life and...

Jack LaPant didn’t come from a farming family and had no personal knowledge of agriculture. But once he switched careers in his early 20s and bought a ranch in a remote area of Northern California, farming became his life and his livelihood. He never expected this decision would lead to his being targeted by the U.S. Army over an environmental law they had no authority to enforce. Yet, after 47 years in the industry, Jack found himself in an eight-year legal battle in which he suffered losses of upward of $1.2 million. As a young man, Jack worked for Pacific...

Iowa’s high property taxes are a growing concern. The Tax Foundation examined the “effective tax rates on owner-occupied housing” across the United States. Iowa ranked 12th highest in the nation. At the heart of high property taxes is local government spending. Unless spending is controlled, any property tax relief will be limited. Iowa’s property tax system is complex, and more transparency is needed. Iowa should look to Utah’s Truth-in-Taxation law, which since 1985 has been controlling the growth of property taxes and providing transparency and accountability for taxpayers. Utah’s Truth-in-Taxation is the gold standard model for any property tax reform.

In the midst of a virus pandemic, with millions of Americans out of work facing housing and food insecurities, the Federal Reserve has managed to keep interest rates near zero, unleashing a real estate boom, the likes of which hasn't been seen in years. The central-planning mega brains at the Marriner Eccles building in Washington, D.C., have managed to boost home prices almost everywhere. The latest S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller index of property values is accelerating at the fastest pace since May 2014. A law enforcement officer shot and killed an Idaho Falls man who was in the location where a suspect fled following a traffic stop early Monday morning. The Idaho Falls Police Department hosted a news conference explaining the situation. Police Chief Bryce Johnson said the man shot was a homeowner in his backyard and was holding a gun. The suspect was found in the vicinity a short time later. Neither of the names of the victim or suspect is being released at this time. According to a news release, IDPD said shortly after midnight a Bonneville County Sheriff’s deputy pulled...
