BAGHDAD, May 22 (UPI) -- Iraq agreed to increase oil exports directly to Iran via a new pipeline in the south, though export capacity in the north remains stuck. Iraq Oil Minister Hussein al-Shahristani and Hasan Kazemi Qomi, the Iranian ambassador to Iraq, struck the deal, according to a top ministry spokesman. "The two agreed to lay the oil pipeline from southern Iraq to Abadan region in Iran in order to export more than 200,000 barrels per day of Iraqi crude oil to Iran according to crude oil international prices," Issam Jihad told reporters.

An explosion destroyed a 30-metre section of the trunk gas pipeline taking Russian gas across Ukraine to Europe on Monday, but Russian gas export monopoly Gazprom said flows of gas were unaffected. “There has been no reduction in gas supplies to European customers,” Gazprom said in a statement. Four Iraqis were arrested early Monday after soldiers found a load of explosives planted under an oil pipeline in northern Iraq that carries crude oil to Turkey, the Iraqi Army said. About 330 pounds of TNT were discovered under a stretch of the pipeline in the al-Kisk area, about 50 miles west of Mosul, said Col. Mohammed Ahmed, a spokesman for the 3rd Iraqi Army division. Malaysia will build a 7 billion US dollar pipeline to transport Middle East oil across the north of its peninsula to East Asian countries. The governor's gas line team pushed Wednesday for a proposed 10-year tax freeze on North Slope gas producers that commit their gas to a pipeline project the state would back.
