Country music artist Spencer Hatcher, his father Michael Hatcher, and Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson addressed the violent murder of Spencer's mother, Holly Hatcher, a beloved teacher and the death of the man responsible for the crime. In a joint video statement, Hutcheson and the Hatcher family shared a timeline of events leading up to the violent attack that claimed the life of 62-year-old Holly, and left her 65-year-old husband, Michael, injured. The suspect, identified as Kevin Moses Walker, 41, of Pikesville, Maryland, was killed during the incident after Michael Hatcher retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and fired a...

Lawyer for Mostafa Eldidi, 26, says he’ll defend his client’s innocenceA 26-year-old Toronto man accused of plotting a deadly ISIS-inspired rampage previously lived in Egypt and once studied at a U.S. university, CBC News has learned. Mostafa Eldidi and his father, Ahmed Fouad Mostafa Eldidi, were arrested last month and charged with terrorism offences over what police described as a plan to carry out "a serious, violent attack in Toronto." On Thursday, Mostafa Eldidi's lawyer, Nate Jackson, appeared in court on his behalf for the first time. He told the court he would be meeting with his new client in...

The New Hampshire father of two who died after an incident at Gillette Stadium during the New England Patriots game Sunday had been punched in the face and knocked unconscious by a Miami Dolphins fan, according to a witness. Dale Mooney, 53, was treated at the scene by EMTs and rushed to a hospital after what had been described as an “apparent medical event,” but was pronounced dead shortly before midnight. A spectator has now claimed that he witnessed a physical altercation between Mooney and a Dolphins fan. “The Dolphins fan walks over and clearly punches him in the face,”...

A New England Patriots season ticket holder has been 'beaten to death' by a Miami Dolphins supporter at the Gillette Stadium, according to witnesses. Father-of-two Dale Mooney, 53, of Newmarket, New Hampshire, died following an incident in the 300-tier segment of the arena just before 11pm on Sunday. The Norfolk County DA's Office said cops responded to calls for medical aid in the section at 10.57pm and 'the matter remains under active investigation'. A photo from the Foxborough, Massachusetts stadium show EMTs scrambling to revive someone who is out of shot on the ground as worried fans watch on. Videos...

I have many friends who are Democrats. I believe most of them are more moderate than those whose rantings are off the wall, but their silence has been deafening in the face of such episodes as the trashing of Justice Roberts and his family, calling the President a Hitler, equating Guantanamo to Soviet gulags and Nazi concentration camps, exposing secret programs that protect us, the Plame-Wilson cabal, etc., etc., etc. When you stand silently by when something is done in your name, you lend support to that something. Are you going to stand silently by as this film is shown...

Who was Sir Moses J. Ezekiel? Calvin E. Johnson, Jr. "The death of Moses Ezekiel, the distinguished and greatly loved American sculptor, who lived in Rome for more than forty years, caused universal regret here----1921, The New York Times Dispatch from Rome. We have heard the many speeches, at a soldier's memorial, by those who conclude, by saying, "We shall never forget our Veterans!" But have we, not, forgotten our ancestors? Memorial observances, which once were attended by the thousands, are now attended by fewer folks. September through October is Hispanic History Month. Do your children know who Sir Moses...
  • NYP: BEHIND THE CASUALTIES - Coalition is on the offensive

The recent spike in U.S. casualties in Iraq, although tragic, needs to be placed in strategic context. As usual, the press has not done so, focusing on the loss of life without any apparent effort to understand what the fighting that led to these casualties means. But the answer is there for anyone who wishes to probe beneath the surface. In fact, the intense fighting indicates that Coalition forces have stepped up their campaign in Al Anbar province to destroy the insurgency by depriving it of its base in the Sunni Triangle and its "rat lines" — the infiltration routes...

May was a costly month in Iraq: 700 Iraqis and some 80 Americans died, making it one of the bloodiest months of the war. While bombings in Baghdad decreased over the last two weeks as the result of a major sweep by some 40,000 Iraqi soldiers and policemen, backed up by 10,000 troops (Operation Lightning/Operation Thunder), insurgent attacks against Iraqi civilians and police have resumed. The continuing attacks have generated the usual sort of stories in the U.S. press: America is mired in a Vietnam-style quagmire. Thus a recent Boston Globe report began by claiming: "Military operations in Iraq have...

I would be remiss as an Alumnus if I did not post some kind of New Market day thread. The Battle of New Market was fought on May 15th 1864 outside the town of New Market VA. During the battle the VMI corps of cadets distinguished themselves by charging the Union lines and capturing a Union Artillery battery. Eight cadets were killed that day. Two more died later from their wounds.
