Republicans are dinging Democratic Senate candidates for participating in fundraising events with North Carolina candidate Cal Cunningham after he admitted to an extramarital affair earlier this month. Online invites show that Cunningham was part of joint fundraising events on Oct. 8 and Oct. 11 with fellow Democrats including Georgia candidates Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, Maine candidate Sara Gideon and Montana candidate Gov. Steve Bullock. "It's despicable that Jon Ossoff raised tens of thousands of dollars with Cal Cunningham, who is now facing accusations of whether he used campaign funds for the benefit of his extramarital relationship with the wife...

North Carolina's mail-in ballot acceptance deadline can be pushed back, a U.S. Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday night, but opponents of a deadline extension could try to take their fight to the Supreme Court. “All ballots must still be mailed on or before Election Day,” the ruling states, according to the News & Observer. “The change is simply an extension from three to nine days after Election Day for a timely ballot to be received and counted."

Efforts to get your vote is in full force right now and even some kids who aren't even eligible to vote are being targeted. ABC11 viewers reached out after their kids received a request to register to vote and absentee ballot request forms in the mail. A 12-year-old boy in Cary, NC got a text message on his phone which states in part..."America needs your voice to be heard but NC records show that your voter registration may not be up to date...register now." The text message provides a link that directs him to the voter registration on the North...

North Carolina can accept absentee ballots that are postmarked by Election Day for more than a week afterward, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday. The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals declined to block an extension for accepting the ballots that was announced in late September. The State Board of Elections decided then that absentee ballots could be accepted until Nov. 12 as long as they were mailed by Election Day, lengthening the timeframe from three to nine days. The change was made as part of a legal settlement with voting rights advocates.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper appeared to call Senate candidate Cal Cunningham's scandal "frustrating," but predicted his campaign would "get across the line" during a conversation with Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden that was caught on a hot mic on Monday. "Thanks for coming out, you didn't have to do this," Biden told Cooper, a Democrat. News of Cunningham's inappropriate behavior emerged in early October, when conservative website National File published texts between Cunningham and California woman Arlene Guzman Todd that were sexual in nature. His campaign confirmed the texts earlier this month. Since then, Cunningham's campaign has tried to...

Two weeks from Election Day and North Carolina is a dead heat in two critical races. Joe Biden holds a one-point lead over Donald Trump, according to a new poll by ABC News/Washington Post on Tuesday morning. Likely voters in the Tar Heel state favor the former Vice President by a 49 percent to 48 percent margin over the President. The Democratic nominee’s narrow lead over the Republican incumbent sits within the survey’s margin of error of 4.5 percentage points. Biden’s standing is boosted by his support among women, 54 percent of whom support him to Trump’s 43 percent, though...

DURHAM, N.C. — More than half of the nearly 1.4 million absentee ballots requested in North Carolina remain outstanding with 15 days left until Election Day. Mailed ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 3 and received by county election officials by Nov. 6 to count. So, with time running short to get those ballots in, WRAL Investigates again put the U.S. Postal Service to the test to see how long it takes "ballots" mailed from different parts of Durham and Cumberland counties to get to a central location in each county.

Cal Cunningham is now the first North Carolina Democrat Senate candidate in 22 years not to receive the Charlotte Observer’s endorsement. The Charlotte Observer and the Raleigh News & Observer on Saturday declined to endorse Cunningham. This makes Cunningham the first North Carolina Democrat Senate candidate to not receive an endorsement from the Charlotte Observer since John Edwards in 1998. In a joint editorial, both outlets wrote that they planned on endorsing Cunningham; however, his lack of transparency and refusal to answer questions from the North Carolina press led the papers to reconsider. The papers wrote: His [Cunningham’s] lack of...

North Carolina Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper sailed through the March primary election, giving an acceptance speech about growing up the son of a public school teacher and working on a farm. He touted his successes since being elected in 2016, including repealing the controversial House Bill 2, and his work on goals like closing the health care coverage gap. But he said something else in that speech, too: “With the challenge of the new coronavirus, I want you to know my team is up to the task, that we are prepared and we are ready to move North Carolina forward.”...

Less than two weeks ago, Democrat Cal Cunningham was the front-runner in the Senate race in North Carolina. A former state senator, a current lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves, and an elder in the Presbyterian Church, the Democrat had been running a belligerently bland campaign against first-term Republican incumbent Thom Tillis. Cunningham filled the airwaves with gauzy television ads and consistently led in polls. Then his sexts were leaked to a right-wing website.

When coronavirus cases began surging across the South this summer, the region seemed destined for the same economic setback the Northeast suffered during the spring. But by the end of summer, the South’s economy remained largely unscathed from the wave of infections. Its unemployment rate had fallen to 6.9%, the lowest of any region in August. The number of people employed was 6% lower in August than in February, before most of the country locked down, compared with declines of 10.6% in the Northeast, 8.2% in the West and 7% in the Midwest. Consumers continued to spend at relatively high...

North Carolina Democrat Cal Cunningham's family business repeatedly ranked among the state's top polluters. The candidate now presents himself as an environmental champion in his bid to unseat Republican senator Thom Tillis (N.C.). Cunningham was a shareholder in the now-defunct Cunningham Brick Company as recently as 2015, court documents obtained by the Washington Free Beacon show. According to emissions reports filed with the North Carolina Department of Environmental and Natural Resources, the company released at least 1,700 tons of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, and other harmful substances between 1993 and 2011, making it a major polluter in the...

Why has Marc Elias, the Democratic National Committee’s election lawyer, filed more than 50 lawsuits around the country challenging state election laws in advance of next month’s presidential election? Elias says he’s fighting against “voter suppression.” But most of the state laws he’s challenging have been in place for years — including when he was the legal adviser to the John Kerry and Hillary Clinton presidential campaigns. Why is Elias suddenly asking courts to overrule state election laws and count ballots that come in after Election Day, or force states to have unattended ballot collection boxes? Someone who knows Elias...

GREENVILLE, N.C. — At the Alice F. Keene Park community center, just outside of Greenville, the line stretched around the parking lot, with wait times up to two hours for the first day of early voting. At the same time, supporters of Donald Trump gathered at the airport to see the president. As of 5:30 p.m., almost 230,000 people had voted early in North Carolina Thursday. That’s on top of the more-than 530,000 people who have already cast absentee ballots. Local candidates and county party volunteers worked the socially-distanced line outside the community center, trying to sway last-minute undecided voters....
