PORTLAND - The radio station KNRK at 94.7 FM is issuing an apology to its listeners after talk show hosts Marconi, Tiny and sidekick Nickie J. laughed at and ridiculed the beheading of American Nick Berg. The three were fired Thursday afternoon, after airing the audio recording of Berg's murder repeatedly on Wednesday and laughing at the incident. "Disgusting… I'm speechless," said one woman. KNRK and Entercom, the company that owns the station, apparently agreed, playing an apology over the airwaves for their listeners: The actions of the KNRK News Morning Show were insensitive, inappropriate and repulsive. On behalf of...

Every time we worry about whether the American people will have the heart and will to see this worldwide struggle against terror through, we realize that we needn’t worry. Because we will soon enough be reminded of the nature of the threat against us, and of the character of our enemy in this struggle — whether in Iraq or Afghanistan, at home or around the world. It happened again yesterday: another bloody beheading for the edification of Web watchers everywhere. This — and worse — will continue to happen until these people are utterly defeated. Until they are, they will...
  • Arabs React to Execution

BEIRUT, Lebanon — Arab media have reacted cautiously to the beheading of an American civilian on a video issued by an associate of Usama bin Laden, with some newspapers conspicuously playing it down or even ignoring it. Opinion-makers condemned the execution of Nick Berg (search), an American businessman who had been kidnapped in Iraq in April. The biggest pan-Arab satellite television channels broadcast an edited version of the video, cutting out the severing of the head as indecent. "This shows how base and vile those who wear the robe of Islam have become," said Abdullah Sahar, a Kuwait University political scientist. SNIP In...

MSNBC said this morning that Nick Berg "paid with his life" for the prisoner abuse. Indeed, the story was about whether Rumsfeld should resign, and the killing was just more evidence he should. USA Today headline: Brutality Intensifies In Iraq. Beheading is portrayed as a consequence of, part of the prisoner abuse story, and a supposed break down in order in Iraq which is the U.S.'s fault. On radio they are playing up the angle that Berg died because Iraq is so "unstable" and Nick's father has given a statement that he's not surprised by his son's murder because the U.S....
  • Anyone see the Berg video yesterday on cable news?

Just talked to my mother on the phone. She is very upset because she saw the beheading while flipping through cable news stations yesterday. She cannot recall which one but it was one of the cable new stations (FOX, MSNBC, CNN) She said it showed the guys talking and then putting Berg on the floor and cutting his head. She said it went off the air very quickly, but for the split seconds of what she saw it was very upsetting. It was between 3:30pm-4:30pm EDT. I have not seen the video, nor do I want. But I would like...
