Long forgotten flags captured by U.S. forces during an obscure 19th-century military action in Korea were uncovered during restoration work at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis last week. The well-preserved flags were rediscovered in the academy’s Mahan Hall when British ensigns seized as trophies during the War of 1812 were removed from their display cases.

McLennan County District Attorney Abel Reyna has been selected as chairman of the executive board of the Special Prosecution Unit for the State of Texas. Special Prosecution Unit was founded in 1984 to combat the growing gang violence in Texas prisons. Since then, SPU has expanded to include not just the prosecution of felony criminal offenses that occur inside our prisons and juvenile justice facilities, but also the civil commitment of sexually violent predators. Residents of Sitka, Alaska woke on the morning of Monday, April 1, 1974, to a bright, clear day. They could see right across Sitka Sound to Kruzof Island, where the familiar sight of Mount Edgecumbe, a volcano dormant for 400 years, loomed. But today something was different about the view. A menacing plume of black smoke was rising from the crater. It looked like the volcano was preparing to blow!

A plumber died Thursday after he was trapped beneath a home where he was working in Flower Mound. Enco Plumbing identified the worker as Christopher Corbet in a statement Thursday evening. Corbet had tunneled under a home in the 6300 block of Eagle Creek Drive to try to fix a leak. Neighbors say the soil collapsed, trapping him. Another plumber ran for help, but neighbors say there was nothing they could do. "It was helpless to go in after to get him," said neighbor Matt Lane. The couple who owns the home was inside at the time. Lane said they...

In the 1970's something occurred, an event occurred in the U.S. that ultimately caused businesses, government, etc. to perform mandatory sexual harassment classes. I can't remember what it was at the time in I believe the latter 1970's that caused the glorious waste of time (IMO) that to this day is a requirement in most workplaces. Was it something similar to what is inundating the headlines today? Is what we are subjected to daily now simply deja vu?

I would bet this has been posted before, but i could'nt find it in search. Epic DJT trolling manifests in DemonRat legislation. I had not seen this before today. h/t /r/The_Donald "This bill amends provisions governing presidential records to: (1) revise the definition of "documentary material" to include social media; (2) revise the definition of "presidential records" to include any personal and official social media account; and (3) define "social media" as any form of electronic communication (such as a website for social networking and microblogging) through which users create an online community to share information, ideas, personal messages, and...

Brown left this Canadian family in the red. The United Parcel Service lost a Canadian man’s $846,000 inheritance, and bank TD Canada Trust is refusing to refund the missing money 10 months later, according to a CBC report. UPS has only offered $32 and an apology letter — and TD hasn’t paid out a dime for the supposedly bank-guaranteed lost dough — leading to “many a night of lost sleep, and gnashing of teeth and anger. Frustration, unbelievable frustration” for Lorette Taylor and her brother Louis Paul Herbert, according to Taylor. After their father died, Herbert said, he went to...

Cooking, cleaning mums will be banned in advertisements across the UK from next year, following a study which claimed traditional gender roles are “harmful and outdated”. The decision to tighten regulation was announced by the Committees of Advertising Practice (CAP) this week, after a report published in summer identified gender stereotypes in adverts as a driver of inequality between men and women. “Wherever they appear or are reinforced, gender stereotypes can lead to mental, physical and social harm which can limit the potential of groups and individuals,” the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) alleged in its study. Depictions deemed problematic include...

Sen. Marco Rubio on Thursday said he will vote against the final GOP tax bill unless leaders meet his demands on the child tax credit. Rubio told Republican leadership that he will not vote for the bill — the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) — unless the child tax credit is more generous. "Senator Rubio has consistently communicated to the Senate tax negotiators that his vote on final passage would depend on whether the refundability of the Child Tax Credit was increased in a meaningful way," a Rubio spokesperson told Business Insider. Rubio introduced an amendment during the first...

Homeless dogs at shelters in Los Angeles could be put on a vegan diet, but veterinarians are not convinced that’s best for the animals. A rule proposed by TV screenwriter Roger Wolfson in the Los Angeles city council would force all animal shelters in the system to feed dogs completely plant-based vegan meals, the Washington Post reports. “We have to embrace the fact that the raising and killing of animals for food purposes must only be done if we have absolutely no other choice,” Wolfson said at the council meeting in November. “This is about the long-term survival of every...

WASHINGTON — The US Federal Communications Commission voted along party lines Thursday to repeal landmark 2015 rules aimed at ensuring a free and open internet, setting up a court fight over a move that could recast the digital landscape. The approval of FCC Chairman Ajit Pai’s proposal marks a victory for internet service providers like AT&T Inc., Comcast Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc. and hands them power over what content consumers can access. Democrats, Hollywood and companies like Google parent Alphabet Inc. and Facebook Inc. had urged Pai, a Republican appointed by President Donald Trump, to keep the Obama-era rules...

During a recent Friday night service, a pastor at New Life Church, an evangelical Protestant megachurch in Colorado Springs, CO, reportedly led the congregation in something you wouldn’t normally expect: the Sign of the Cross and a prayer of a consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. And sure enough, it’s a prayer for consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1899! The slides also have a picture of the statue of St. Peter in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican...

On December 14, National Alabama Day recognizes the Heart of Dixie. The 22nd state to join the union, Alabama has played pivotal roles in U.S. history, scientific advancements and its magnificent landscapes attract visitors from far and wide. Alabama enjoys 60 miles of shoreline along the Gulf Coast. While the coastal region is dotted with swamps and bayous, it also includes beautiful sandy beaches. Move northward from the coast, and the lowlands provide the fertile soils of the Black Belt, land that long yielded productive cotton crops. The Northern half of the state is dominated by the forested hills and...

Music mogul and entrepreneur Russell Simmons is “vehemently” denying he raped at least three women dating back to the late 1980s. In future battles, U.S. soldiers will have a new sidearm for personal protection. The Army’s new pistol may see more action than the last thanks to a design that has great potential for offensive purposes like close quarter combat. The Army has begun fielding the first Sig Sauer XM17 Modular Handgun System (MHS) sidearms. The Sig Sauer 9mm XM17, and the more compact version XM18, are replacing the M9 as the Army’s service pistol. This is the first change in about three decades since Beretta’s M9 was first introduced as the Army’s sidearm in the Cold War era back in...
