Of the two communities that confronted each other 400 years ago in New England, it may now be the Indians who most resemble today's Americans. The following essay is part of The Federalist’s 1620 Project, a symposium exploring the connections and contributions of the early Pilgrim and Puritan settlers in New England to the uniquely American synthesis of faith, family, freedom, and self-government.Possibly someone will surprise us at the last minute. Possibly the coronavirus is to blame. But with 2020 nearly over, it looks like the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’s arrival at Plymouth, Massachusetts, is going to pass uncommemorated. There have...

BOSTON — Gov. Charlie Baker is urging those attending services at houses of worship in Massachusetts to adhere to COVID-19 precautions, like wearing masks and practicing social distancing particularly for indoor services. The state is still seeing too many COVID-19 clusters that can be traced back to houses of worship, the Republican said at a Tuesday press conference. Since the start of the pandemic, houses of workshop have experienced a total of 36 clusters, Baker said. “We know that houses of worship have always served as a place of refuge especially in difficult times like this,” Baker said at a...

Massachusetts police on Tuesday arrested a man accused of spitting at two women hikers who weren’t wearing face masks — and telling them he had COVID-19. Hale Powell, 71, was charged with false threat of a biological agent and assault and battery for Saturday’s caught-on-camera incident on a hiking trail in Ashburnham. The septuagenarian pleaded not guilty at his arraignment later Tuesday — where a judge ordered him to quarantine and get tested for the coronavirus, the Telegram & Gazette newspaper reported. One of the two women hiking on the trail captured video of the encounter, showing an elderly man...

Charlie Baker’s desk. The state House passed the measure last week. The pro-abortion amendment is similar to the ROE Act, an unpopular bill that languished in committee for more than a year. Using a new strategy to expand abortions and appease pro-abortion lobbying groups, Democrats now are trying...

The Nantucket Police Department in Massachusetts announced Wednesday that its officers would indefinitely halt new weapons permit applications due to heightened risk of coronavirus spread. The department initially announced the decision on Twitter, writing that all fingerprint services were to be suspended, but the post was removed shortly after. The law enforcement body said the reason for its decision was that the employees who fielded the applications expressed “concern that they could not safely do their jobs,” according to a press release.

The group Justice Democrats, which helped elect Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other members of the left-wing “Squad,” recoiled Tuesday at President-elect Joe Biden’s White House staff picks. The influential organization’s public rebuke reflects an internal Democratic Party power struggle two months before Biden takes office. “A Biden administration dominated by corporate-friendly insiders will not help usher in the most progressive Democratic administration in generations… progressives find corporate-friendly Biden appointments unacceptable” the organization wrote on Twitter.

I am travelling from Maryland to either CT or MA next week. When I tried to book a flight, an alert came up about China Virus travel restrictions. 1) Question: Are CT and MA questioning arriving passengers at their airports? Are they taking your information, etc.? 2) If you travel by car into CT, do they stop you? 3) How about Amtrak? Bottom line: I don't fear the China Virus, but I fear that I could get stuck in some leftist state b/c of their travel restrictions.

Massachusetts House Speaker Robert DeLeo (D) will push for a vote this week on an amendment to the annual budget bill that would codify abortion rights into state law, legalize abortions until birth, and allow abortionists to deny care to infants who survive the procedure. “Following last week’s joint statement with Senate President [Karen] Spilka [D], in which we expressed concern over the threat to women’s reproductive rights on the national level, it is urgent that the House take up an immediate measure to remove barriers to women’s reproductive health options and protect the concepts enshrined in Roe v. A wild conference call amongst House Democrats, details of which leaked on Twitter Thursday, shows emotional lawmakers distraught with Nancy Pelosi and the ‘Squad’ over their party’s disastrous election performance. Democrats had expected to pick up 10-15 seats on election day and have instead seen Republicans gain six net seats while being on track to net 10 seats overall. Several members of the caucus “angrily confronted” Pelosi over the losses and blasted radical progressives for tying the party to efforts to “defund the police” and “socialism.”

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) on Friday pushed back against President Trump's baseless claim that the election is being stolen, warning that his rhetoric is only inflaming partisan tensions. Romney, in a statement posted to Twitter, said the president was "right" to "exhaust legal remedies," including asking for recounts and that alleged voting irregularities be investigated, but "wrong to say that the election was rigged, corrupt and stolen." "Doing so damages the cause of freedom here and around the world, weakens the institutions that lie at the foundation of the Republic and recklessly inflames destructive and dangerous passions," Romney added. Gov. Charlie Baker’s new mask mandate that requires people to wear masks in public at all times — no matter how far away they are from other people — is catching flack from a health care expert who questions what it will do to reduce infections. “Masks now mandated outdoors in MA regardless of distancing. How will this reduce infections? Most transmission is happening indoors, so ensure people have safer spaces to gather: tents, heat lamps, fire pits. Focus on actual risk, not pandemic theater,” tweeted Julia Marcus, epidemiologist and associate professor at Harvard Medical School.
  • Stay-at-home advisory: Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker sets curfew, requires businesses to close by 9:30 p.m. nightly

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker issued a new stay-at-home advisory Monday asking all residents to be in their homes from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily and ordered restaurants to stop table service at 9:30 p.m. to ensure customers can get home in time. The stay-at-home advisory takes effect at 12:01 a.m. Friday. The state allows exceptions for going to work, seeking medical care, going to the grocery store and picking up take-out food. “We’re doing much better than many other states and many other countries, but hereto we’ve let down our guard,” he said. The curfew also applies to all...
