Of America’s 7,382 state legislators, only 85 are openly gay or lesbian. They are, however, playing an outsized and often impassioned role when the agenda turns to recognizing same-sex couples with civil unions or full marriage rights. In Hawaii and Illinois, gay state representatives were lead sponsors of civil union bills signed into law earlier this year. In Maryland and Rhode Island, gay lawmakers are co-sponsoring pending bills that would legalize same-sex marriage. In New York, gay state Sen. Tom Duane is preparing to be lead sponsor of a marriage bill in his chamber later this session. “For my colleagues,...

The candidate of change, the shining proponent of a "new way" in national politics, says that you aren't allowed to bring a sign to his rally. So much for the right of free political speech. To add insult to injury, this rally was held at the publicly funded University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. So, now the government is lending the weight of its authority to squelch free speech. So, where is the hew and cry about this unAmerican activity? Did the media even note this heavy-handed policy? But, it is all true nonetheless. The rally was held and...

ABC’s Sunlen Miller, Matt Jaffe, and John Berman Report: The rain pouring down, his jacket off, his white dress-shirt clinging to his body, Barack Obama played to a crowd in a state that hasn’t elected a Democrat since 1964. Obama and his running mate Delaware Sen. Joe Biden took the stage at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va., before a crowd of 10,000 to 20,000 people who had been waiting hours in the mud to see them. The weather in northern Virginia has been awful the last couple of days. And not long after Joe Biden’s introduction, just...

Punch & Judy by: Malcolm A. Kline, March 26, 2008 A century-old university in the Old Dominion cashiered the last DUI suspect—William J. Frawley, not the one from I Love Lucy—to serve as president and replaced him with the first woman to hold that post. “Less than a year after firing their president for his arrest on two drunken driving charges, members of the governing board at the University of Mary Washington have named his replacement,” Eugene McCormack reported in the Chronicle of Higher Education this month. “Judy G. Hample, a longtime higher-education administrator who is chancellor of the Pennsylvania...

"According to statements from the university and other sources, Frawley was driving the car provided to the university president when he was involved in a wreck in Northern Virginia on April 10 and was badly hurt. The car was totaled.... Later that afternoon (April 11), a driver near Fredericksburg called police to say a man in a car in front of her was driving recklessly. The driver did not stop when police turned on flashing lights but continued until he pulled into the driveway of the university president's house."
