<description>On this date in 1923, Polish nationalist painter Eligiusz Niewiadomski was executed for assassinating Poland&#x26;#x2019;s first president. After more than a century under German, Austrian, and (most especially hated) Russian domination, Poland had established itself an independent republic in the first world war&#x26;#x2019;s imperial wreckage.
