ONE OF THEIR TARGETS WAS THE GABALA RADAR STATION The Gabala radar station is evidently capable of detecting Iranian missile launches. The facility was built by the Soviets and is now leased back from Azerbaijan by Russia. There has been talk of US/Russian cooperation in operating the site for the purpose of monitoring Iranian actions, much to the chagrin of the mullahs.

The Israeli embassy in Mexico said on Friday it had been sent a partially opened package that appeared to have been in contact with explosives. The embassy in Mexico City said the package arrived on Thursday. Sniffer dogs picked up the scent of explosives and tests later showed that the exterior of the package was tainted with traces of explosive. The embassy did not find any explosive devices but said it was taking extra precautions following the militant attacks on Mumbai in India last week that killed at least 171 people.

Afghanistan to Ask NATO for Bigger Army Afghan officials will go to the NATO summit in Romania Thursday with a request: pay to increase our national Army by 40 percent. A bigger Army, Afghan officials argue, will allow the US and other coalition members to scale back in the coming years. This appeal comes amid pleas from the US and Canada for other NATO members to commit more to the Afghanistan mission, which many analysts say has floundered over the past year for lack of resources and a coherent strategy. France is expected to contribute another 1,000 forces and...

SO it wasn't a political stunt. It isn't about Iraq. And the threat of Islamist terror right here is more real than many pretend. How real? If the police are right, they have saved scores of you from being blown up -- as people in Madrid and London were blown up. As NSW Police Commissioner Ken Moroney put it, the arrest yesterday of 17 Muslim men disrupted "the final stages of a large-scale terrorist attack". He said explosive material had already been collected. Yet only last week, Prime Minister John Howard was pilloried by many for having warned of an...

A British-born Muslim convert convicted in Australia's first terrorism trial of plotting to bomb the Israeli Embassy in Canberra was sentenced to nine years in prison. Perth District Court judge Paul Healy said 50-year-old Jack Roche, originally from Hull, should serve four and a half years before becoming eligible for parole, although he backdated the term to start when Roche was taken into custody - meaning that Roche could be free in about three years. Prosecutor Ron Davies earlier described Roche's plot as an affront to Australian values, and called for a sentence approaching the 25-year maximum to serve as...

Sears Tower allegedly was on 9/11 target list WASHINGTON -- A senior leader of Al Qaeda captured early this month in Pakistan has told interrogators that Osama bin Laden personally selected the targets for the Sept. 11 attacks and rejected plans for an even broader assault on prominent American buildings, including the Sears Tower, officials said Wednesday. A classified government analysis circulated this week among counterterrorism officials said Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the captured Al Qaeda leader, has told interrogators that bin Laden gave Mohamed Atta, the leader of the Sept. 11 hijackers, "a list of targets."
