Former Los Angeles Times reporter Sam Fulwood III unloaded on conservative criticism of Gwen Ifill’s conflict of interest on the Washington Post-owned website The Root on Thursday with an article titled "Distort, Distract, Demagogue." [1] Any conservative who questioned whether Ifill would be a fair moderator when she’s writing a book chronicling the "age of Obama" is not only a demagogue, but a sycophant: If nothing else, the sycophants genuflecting to the McCain-Palin presidential campaign are experts at creating diversions. When things go bad, they call out the troops to fill the airwaves with misdirection. Or they heave Hail Mary passes,...

As I noted below, whether Ifill betrays a bias in favor of Obama/Biden tonight is somewhat beside the point. I'll bet that it will be hard to detect any bias in the questions she asks or the manner in which she asks them. And that's precisely why her evident conflict of interest is so insidious. It's more often the questions that aren't asked that betray bias and unfairness. Consider: I'd wager that if a poll had been conducted one year ago asking likely voters whether a candidate who had a working relationship with an unrepentant former terrorist had even the...

Gwen Ifill has done solid, important journalism. She’ll likely be a good, tough, and neutral moderator to the vice-presidential debate. Let’s set that aside, for now. Conflict of interest is often about appearances. There appears, to us, to be a conflict in Ifill moderating tomorrow night’s vice presidential debate. Here’s why: - Ifill’s upcoming book is called “The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama.” It, apparently, “surveys the American political landscape, shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama’s stunning presidential campaign and introducing the emerging young African American politicians [like Newark Mayor Corey Booker and...

Gwen Ifill's book, "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama" was no secret. The publisher had it listed, and Ifill had done video promotions for it. AP reports Ifill never disclosed her authorship to the Presidential Debate Commission. Gwen Ifill was chosen to moderate the vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin and yesterday headlines hit the major media showing that Ifill was writing a book, to be released on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009, called "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama." In an interview with Associated Press, Ifill waves away...

The Obamas: Portrait of an American Family Gwen Ifill Soon we will vote for our next president, and for the first time in history, one of the two candidates is a Black man. For a year, Essence pursued an interview with the entire Obama family to no avail. Finally, this summer ESSENCE became the only Black media outlet allowed a glimpse into the lives of Barack, Michelle and their two girls, Malia and Sasha, when we were invited to their South Side Chicago home. Weeks later, veteran political journalist Gwen Ifill was with the family as they campaigned in a...

By Gwen Ifill PBS Chief Political Correspondent and Gwen Ifill President, Ifill Center for Media Ethics and Gwen Ifill Editor, BarackBeat FanzineWASHINGTON - As expected, a blue ribbon panel from the Ifill Center for Media Ethics cleared award-winning political journalist Gwen Ifill of all charge today, ending a lengthy 20 minute investigation into “ethics” charges that most observers believe were motivated by politics and racism. Ifill, like dynamic groundbreaking President-in-Waiting Barack Obama, is Black. The complete exoneration clears the way for Ifill to moderate the Vice Presidential debate tonight between respected Senate veteran Joe Biden and former beauty pageant loser...

The refrain from most of the GOP talking heads over the last twenty four hours concerning Gwen Ifill's role during the VP debate is that she's a fine journalist, who, now that the fact of her book is public knowledge, shouldn't be precluded from moderating the event. Heck, it may even work to Palin's advantage because Ifill will be under intense scrutiny to be fair and balanced. This rationale points to the GOP's ( and, to some extent, conservatives') nearly wholesale capitulation to liberal media dominance and is one of the reasons the GOP base find themselves so frequently dispirited:...

Gwen Ifill Wrote Adulatory Magazine Article About Obama Family By P.J. Gladnick Created 2008-10-02 11:55 It is still a ways to go until Christmas but the lyrics certain song from that season will ring through your head while reading this Essence magazine article [1] authored by Gwen Ifill: "Oh Come Let Us Adore Him!" The "Him" in this case being Barack Obama. You have probably heard how the PBS moderator of tonight's vice-presidential debate, Ifill, appears to have a big conflict of interest [1] due to her book, with the publication date of January 20, 2009, titled "The Breakthrough: Politics...

NEW YORK - PBS journalist Gwen Ifill, moderator of the upcoming vice presidential debate, dismissed conservative questions about her impartiality because she is writing a book that includes material on Barack Obama. Ifill said Wednesday that she hasn't even written her chapter on Obama for the book "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama," which is to be published by Doubleday on Jan. 20, 2009, the day a new president is inaugurated. "I've got a pretty long track record covering politics and news, so I'm not particularly worried that one-day blog chatter is going to destroy my...

This is beyond belief. Its bad enough the moderator of tomorrow nights debate is an outspoken Obama supporter. But the fact that she has a pro-Obama book set to be released on inauguration day 2009 and thus has a vested interest in seeing Obama elected was the icing on the cake. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN??? Or more importantly, why is the McCain campaign not up in arms about it? If the moderator was a known McCain supporter you can bet the Obama campaign would be crying foul, as would their MSM cronies. This is no different then a lawyer defending...

The AP has a hidden nugget at the end of its report on the Gwen Ifill controversy. While some have blamed the McCain campaign for agreeing to Ifill as a moderator for tomorrow night’s VP debate while writing a book about “The Age of Barack Obama”, it turns out that Ifill didn’t bother to inform the Commission or the McCain campaign about the book: The host of PBS’ “Washington Week” and senior correspondent on “The NewsHour” said she did not tell the Commission on Presidential Debates about the book. The commission had no immediate comment when contacted by The Associated...

First On TVNewser: PBS' Gwen Ifill has broken her ankle after tripping and falling down stairs at her home last night, a NewsHour insider tells TVNewser. We're told Ifill had been walking up a staircase, carrying research related to her moderating duties at Thursday's Vice Presidential debate in St. Louis, when she took a wrong step. We are also told the show will go on: Ifill is planning to travel to Missouri for the big event.

There's one good reason Gwen Ifill, the host of the PBS show Washington Week, is moderating the vice-presidential debate: she has a forthcoming book about Barack Obama (and other black Democrats) called The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama. Ifill presents Obama and the others as the idealistic successors of Martin Luther King: "This book is about a generation of people who took seriously the achievements that their parents fought for. They knew that Martin Luther King did what he did so they can do what they’re doing, and they decided to follow through."

As debate moderators go, PBS' Gwen Ifill, who is scheduled to moderate the vice presidential debate between Sen. Joe Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin on Thursday, is far from impartial. Her support of Democratic candidate Barack Obama cannot be denied, but it sure can be shoved under the rug and brushed aside by the mainstream media. Ifill just so happens to have written a book about Obama, "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama." The book will be released on January 20, 2009 - a date which coincides with the inauguration of the next president of the...

How can the moderator Gwen Ifill show up to a debate where she has a financial stake in the outcome? I think Hillary Clinton would be a fairer moderator.
-
As we learned in the first debate, moderators can help shape the outcome. PBS host Jim Lehrer asked tough questions to President Bush about his record, but failed to do the same for John Kerry. He asked Kerry to list Bush's “colossal misjudgments,” and then to list the President's lies. But he never once asked Kerry about his 20-year Senate record. Will PBS’s Gwen Ifill do better in the running-mate debate? The evidence suggests here comes liberal moderator number two: ■Don’t Bash Coke Dealers. “Why are people particularly outraged when people with last names like Cabrera, and people from...
