EPPING — High school freshman Ciretta MacKenzie didn’t think it would be a problem if she wore her President Trump T-shirt on Monday. After all, it was a day when students were encouraged to celebrate American pride by showing off their red, white and blue. “I thought for America Day it would be OK and there wouldn’t be an issue,” said Ciretta, who turns 15 next week. But the shirt, which said “Trump” and “Make America Great Again” across the front, resulted in her being called to the principal’s office. Ciretta said she was told by Epping High School Principal...

A few nights after North Bergen High School premiered its stage version of the 1979 horror film “Alien," the internet is begging for an encore. After Twitter user Paul Owens posted a few shots of the space-themed set from Friday night's production, many were quick to praise the creative and hard-working students and faculty involved in pulling it off. Drama teacher Perfecto Cuervo said art teacher Steven Defendini was the mastermind behind the set design of "Aliens the Play," which premiered March 19 and had another show Friday evening. The crew has been working since September to bring the creepy...

More than 200 Georgia high school students have been called into the school nurse to get tested for tuberculosis after one student was diagnosed with the life-threatening, infectious disease. A letter was sent to parents on Friday from the principal of Discovery High School, in Lawrenceville, notifying them of the teenager's condition. The letter also revealed that students and faculty may have been 'in close and continuous contact' with the infected student, reported WSB-TV. According to the Gwinnett County Health Department, the teenager, who has not been identified, is currently at home receiving treatment.

It’s hilarious to me that Trump thinks people don’t just already assume he was a garbage student. What if the transcripts leak out and his image as a genius is sullied?I mean, really. The guy supports tariffs, for cripes sake. This story is classic Trump, though, in how it marries intimidation with a sense of petty absurdity that drains most (but not all) of the menace out of it. Michael Cohen, who admitted to Congress last week that he had threatened Trump’s alma maters about not releasing his records, is the living, breathing embodiment of that vibe, a cross between...

An Indiana state senator is recommending high school students pass a citizenship test in order to graduate. Sen. Dennis Kruse is proposing a bill that requires students in public high school to pass a 100-question citizenship test in order to officially graduate, The Journal Gazette reported. The same examination used by immigrants to become legal U.S. citizens would be administered to the students if Senate Bill 132 passes. The same bill proposed in 2015 was defeated by the full Senate. “There is a deficiency in government and civics knowledge, and it’s getting worse,” the Indiana Republican told The Journal Gazette....

BUENA, N.J. -- A New Jersey school district says its wrestling team will no longer compete in events officiated by a referee who told a wrestler to lose his dreadlocks or forfeit his bout. The announcement came during an emergency meeting held Wednesday with the Buena Regional school board and members of the community. The groups that assign referees have already said they wouldn't assign the ref until further notice. Buena Regional High School wrestler Andrew Johnson had his dreadlocks cut minutes before his match on Dec. 19. Johnson, who is black, had a cover over his hair, but referee...

Winning: On the campaign trail in 2016, then-GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump talked of renewing America’s manufacturing potential after decades of decline due to “horrible” trade deals like NAFTA that, he said, led to the loss of tens of thousands of jobs. After just two years, thanks to POTUS Trump’s economic policies of deregulation, tax relief, and other business-friendly measures, the U.S. economy is soaring and manufacturing, especially, is booming. In fact, as UPI notes, the manufacturing industry is expanding so fast factories are having difficulty finding enough workers to fill open positions.

The standards being applied to Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s fitness for high office would have killed the presidential candidacy of Barack Obama, among other recent Democrats (Clinton and Kennedy, for starters). Bill Clinton has adopted a low public profile, and deployed Hillary’s ”Bimbo Eruptions” squad to silence and discredit the women “survivors” of his sexual aggression. But Barack Obama went on the record in 2001, and nobody cared about behavior in high school they now feign outrage over in the case of judge Kavanaugh. Kudos to Ryan Saavedra of The Daily Wire for uncovering a video from 17 years ago...

  • If this HS cheerleading squad T-shirt is ‘racist’ then the term has no meaning anymore

Overused: These days, the term “racist” is used so often as a means of attacking anything having to do with an American traditional value that the term simply has no meaning anymore, and frankly that’s a shame because there are real racists out there. Louis Farrakhan, neo-Nazis, some BLM members and white supremacists come to mind. But when a T-shirt is called “racist” simply because it contains references to Americana — and the accuser believed and taken seriously just because they’re a minority, then “racist” has no meaning anymore.
  • Inner-city students do better at Catholic schools

New research from the Loyola Marymount University School of Education (SOE) shows that inner-city Los Angeles students attending Catholic schools graduate high school at a much higher rate than their peers in comparable public and charter schools. 100 percent of these students, who came from families living at or below the poverty line, graduated high school. 96 percent were accepted into either two- or four-year colleges. Key factors in achieving not only high academic excellence but also character formation boiled down to school climate, personal relationship and tuition assistance, according to interviews with the tracked students. One alumnus spoke of...

A former high school behavior counselor accused of attacking a motorist with a baseball bat in a 2016 road rage incident pleaded guilty Wednesday (June 13) to aggravated battery. Wilbert Gray, 42, pleaded guilty as charged as potential jurors assembled outside Criminal District Judge Darryl Derbigny's courtroom, according to District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro's office. Gray was involved in a minor wreck with a 37-year-old man at the intersection of Tulane and Carrollton avenues around midnight on Sept. 4, 2016, according to New Orleans police. An Indiana teacher says he was forced to resign after he refused to comply with the school district’s policy of addressing transgender students by their preferred names. John Kluge, the former orchestra teacher at Brownsburg High School in Brownsburg, Indiana, argued that the policy ― which also requires teachers to refer to students using the pronouns which best align with their gender identity ― goes against his religious beliefs and violates the First Amendment. “I’m being compelled to encourage students in what I believe is something that’s a dangerous lifestyle,” the teacher, who has been with the Brownsburg School District...

“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” This famous quote attributed to Dr. Seuss applies to many things in life, but NBC’s high school drama Rise is not one of them. If anything, we should cry because it happened, and smile now that it is finally over. Unlike the show’s title Rise, every episode in this debut season continued to sink to new lows, so we can also smile over the news that the curtain has been lowered for good on the series. The show takes place at Stanton High School, where theater teacher Mr. Mazzuchelli (Josh Radnor),...

Sidney Bouvier Gilstrap-Portley allegedly posed as a 17-year-old Hurricane Harvey refugee so he could play boys' basketball at Hillcrest High School in Dallas, Texas. On Tuesday, the Dallas Morning News reported the 25-year-old, who also spent time at Skyline High School, was arrested Friday on a charge of tampering with government records. The mother of a 14-year-old female student told the paper he dated her daughter while at Hillcrest High. Gilstrap-Portley, who officials say was operating under the alias Rashun Richardson, was named the District 11-5A Offensive Player of the Year during the 2017-18 season.

While much attention has been paid to his peers pushing for gun law reforms, a Ridgefield High School sophomore thinks his message is just as important. On Wednesday morning, Mario Giordano led about 100 students on a walkout in support of the Second Amendment. It was part of a national "Stand for the Second" event that saw marches in an estimated 40 states. The 10 a.m. walkout started at the high school and ended with a presentation at a nearby community center, where Giordano spoke. Other New Jersey walkouts occurred in Cherry Hill and Jersey City. “The Second Amendment requires...
