She is a gynecologist. He is a surgeon. They are married and both 77 years old. In mid-November, they were diagnosed with COVID-19, first her, then him. Their paths diverge at this point, but not to worry. She took the drug hydroxychloroquine. He took ivermectin. They are both well now – walking, golfing, doing yoga — seven weeks later. The couple’s brush with COVID might have ended very differently. In the United States, patients 75 to 84 years old die at 220 times the rate of adults under 30. But these two elderly, otherwise healthy physicians live in India. They were...

AbstractMass antigen testing in Slovakia conducted in October and November 2020 is a source of important data. We perform its statistical analysis and study epidemic geographical patterns. We observe exponentially distributed test positivity and exponential trends in its geographical distribution, and its approximately 10 km spatial characteristic correlation length. A small correlation between positivity in two consecutive testing rounds appeared on the municipalities level but it significantly increased on the counties level. Recent 7-day PCR tests incidence per capita served as a good proxy for antigen test positivity. Positivity of non-residents was higher than of residents when mass testing was...

Actress Tanya Roberts, who starred in the TV sitcom That '70s Show and the 1985 James Bond movie A View to Kill, has died at age 65 from a urinary tract infection (UTI) that spread to other parts of her body. The sad news came after a bizarre turn of events. TMZ initially reported, via Roberts' publicist Mike Pingel, that the star collapsed at home on Christmas Eve after walking her dogs. She was then taken to the hospital and put on a ventilator, according to the news outlet, but never recovered and died on Sunday (January 3). Roberts' husband...

Sometimes it seems as if the diet world is nearly as polarized as the political sphere. Especially when it comes to Intermittent Fasting (IF). I wrote a piece about it last year and, almost immediately, saw people sub-tweeting me to complain about promoting an eating disorder in the name of wellness. That’s a pretty stock response to the mere mention of IF in some circles. On the other end of the spectrum are the die-hard devotees of this popular weight-loss plan, which places more emphasis on when people eat than what they eat. Earlier this fall, when Dr. Ethan Weiss,...

New research predicts that, like the virus that caused the Spanish flu epidemic in 1918, COVID-19 will become another seasonal bug that we build efficient long-term immunity against. Researchers at Emory University and the Department of Biology and Center for Disease Dynamics at Pennsylvania State University published their findings in Science. It provides a hopeful outlook for the course of the pandemic, especially for young, healthy individuals who have been infected:We are currently faced with the question of how the CoV-2 severity may change in the years ahead. Our analysis of immunological and epidemiological data on endemic human coronaviruses (HCoVs)...

It’s just the flu, bro. https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/BGR/bulgaria/death-rate https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/DEU/germany/death-rate https://www.macrotrends.net/countries/USA/united-states/death-rate Death rate trends for Brazil, Germany, and USA. Open the links and check whatever country you want. The fact is that the death rate changes from year to year are much more a function of demographic trends than the Coronavirus. The American death rate was always going to be higher this year than in the last few years regardless of flu, Coronavirus, etc. In many countries there is a lower death rate this year than in past years. - https://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3927923/posts Biden says he can’t change the trajectory of the Coronavirus for several...

Subject: On the 8th Day God created Seniors God's Plan for Aging. Most seniors never get enough exercise. In His wisdom God decreed that seniors become forgetful so they would have to search for their glasses, keys, and other things, thus doing more walking. And God looked down and saw that it was good. Then God saw there was another need. In His wisdom He made seniors lose coordination so they would drop things, requiring them to bend, reach, and stretch. And God looked down and saw that it was good. Then God considered the function of bladders and decided...

When President Joe Biden announced his $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill last week, the opening bid drew mostly positive reviews from progressive observers. But a handful of influential left-wing members of Congress, activists and commentators cried foul, arguing that Biden’s proposal failed to deliver on his promise to provide all lower- and middle-income households with $2,000 relief payments. **SNIP** In a note to a group of socialists, David Duhalde, a vice chair of the Democratic Socialists of America Fund, the DSA’s philanthropic arm, acknowledged the merit of the critique of Biden’s proposal before suggesting that an ill-fated battle to increase...

A Stanford study comparing Covid responses in different countries found “no clear significant beneficial effect” from stay-at-home orders and business closures. The peer-reviewed study, published Jan. 5 in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation, found that lockdown orders early in the Covid pandemic didn’t provide more benefits than other measures such as social distancing and travel reduction. The study investigated measures by England, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, the U.S., South Korea and Sweden. The first eight countries imposed stay-at-home orders on residents while South Korea and Sweden took less restrictive steps. The researchers used a mathematical model to...

Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ) is developing one of the most closely watched Covid-19 vaccines, considering that it is a single-dose shot that should be relatively easy to distribute. Here’s a quick rundown on the recent developments for the vaccine. Based on data from the phase 1/2 trials of 805 participants, published on Wednesday, the vaccine generated a long-lasting immune response with 90% of participants generating neutralizing antibodies against the Coronavirus. Based on these early-stage findings the company expects the vaccine to be more than 70% effective, noting that efficacy could reach “very high levels”. For perspective, the Pfizer and...

Today the Biden Administration announced a new COVID vaccine rollout plan. President Biden announced that Hunter Biden would be the Drug and Vaccine Czar overseeing the vaccine rollout citing his vast experience in drug distribution. Hunter announced that he was shunning CVS, Walgreens, Amazon, Walmart, and other major distributors to accelerate the vaccine rollout. Instead, Hunter has contracted with the major drug cartels to distribute the vaccines citing their vast existing distributor experience and capabilities. Since the cartels have existing agreements with local, state and national political representatives, existing structure and management capabilities would not have to be re-invented. Kickbacks...

Bali has been a hot topic on social media lately, no thanks to rule-breaking foreigners. They say a dog is a man’s best friend — and that was definitely the case for one patient of a hospital in northeastern Turkey, whose loyal pet waited by the entrance for six days until he was discharged. When Cemal Senturk was transferred by ambulance to Medical Park Hospital in Trabzon on January 14, his dog, Boncuk, escaped from their apartment and followed him to the facility, where she waited patiently each day. Hospital staff informed Senturk’s family about the whereabouts of his canine friend. But after Boncuk was brought back home, she managed to escape again — and...

Microsoft has been granted a patent for technology that would “reanimate” the dead by re-creating them via social media posts, videos and private messages that could even be downloaded into a 3D lifelike model of the deceased. Not creepy at all. “The tech giant has raised the possibility of creating an AI-based chatbot that would be built upon the profile of a person, which includes their “images, voice data, social media posts, electronic messages,” among other types of personal information,” reports IGN. “It’s understood that the chatbot would then be able to simulate human conversation through voice commands and/or text...

While some people are still pushing back against wearing a face mask in public despite strong evidence that covering the nose and mouth helps protect the wearer and those around them from COVID-19 infection, others are taking their level of protection one step further by doubling up and wearing two. Layered face masks have been spotted on everyone from President Joe Biden to New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick to essential workers on public transportation and at the grocery store. But is wearing two face masks actually more effective than wearing one? And is it even safe to layer up?...

Researchers engineered cells to carry either a protein (green) from SARS-CoV-2 or its human target ACE2 (magenta). When near each other, the cells’ membranes fused. Researchers think a similar process lets the virus slip into cells. Credit: D. Sanders et al./bioRxiv.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- People taking cholesterol-lowering drugs may fare better than others if they catch the novel coronavirus. A new study hints at why: the virus relies on the fatty molecule to get past the cell's protective membrane. To cause COVID-19, the SARS-CoV-2 virus must force its way into people's cells—and it needs an accomplice. Cholesterol, the waxy compound better known...

The Lavo home hydrogen battery is not a battery, it's an electrolysis system, hydrogen storage array and fuel cell power system rolled into one attractive cabinetLavo VIEW 3 IMAGES To get off the grid with home solar, you need to be able to generate energy when the Sun's out, and store it for when it's not. Normally, people do this with lithium battery systems – Tesla's Powerwall 2 is an example. But Australian company Lavo has built a rather spunky (if chunky) cabinet that can sit on the side of your house and store your excess energy as hydrogen. The...

Nearly 16 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered in the United States, and even though less than 5% of the population has been vaccinated so far, some travel providers are already accepting proof of vaccination as a requirement to travel. What’s more, travelers who’ve had the vaccine are itching to hit the road. “I have multiple trips planned for later this year, the biggest one being South Africa,” said Michele Scott, a physician and member of TPG’s Facebook group who had just had her first dose of the vaccine. “[But even after being vaccinated], I’m still taking precautions [like]...
