The former Republican lawmaker and fiscal conservative has closed a 20-point gap against incumbent Sen. Arlen Specter, who switched parties earlier this year in part due to fears that he could not beat Toomey in a GOP primary. The latest survey, conducted July 14-19, shows Specter leading by just one point, 45%-44%, against Toomey in a general election match up.
