It was only in late March when Mozilla released Firefox 4.0, but under their new development practices that are similar to that of Google's Chrome web-browser, Firefox 5.0 was released yesterday. Firefox 5 is delivered under what Mozilla refers to as a "rapid release development cycle" and this release carries over 1,000 improvements in just about three months of development. Among the changes this time around is the Do-Not-Track privacy feature for the Android port of Firefox, improved add-ons, CSS Animations support, and many other new features.

When I started Firefox tonight I got a Windows message saying that Firefox wanted to update from the Internet. I allowed it, and right away I started getting incredibly annoying audio advertisements and a popup that said "GetIt" whenever I tried to click on anything. I rolled it back to a restore point and got rid of it, but whatever it is, it is so blatantly annoying that I don't know what they think they are accomplishing.

My address bar in Firefox has turned into a google search box. I can't go the "about:config" route to fix since I would need the address bar to do that. I checked for viruses and get none. I unlocked the toolbars, thinking maybe the address bar was hidden and could be dragged out. No dice. Any suggestions most appreciated. Here's a screen cap. Hopefully it shows up.

After spending months on end watching Mozilla Firefox 4 go through eleven-and-some-odd betas, I’m less than impressed with what I’ve waited for all this time. The first time I launched a fresh install of Firefox 4 and navigated to the homepage of the New York Times, it hung for almost a minute on end – and then every ad block on the page burped with a “Flash plugin has crashed” message. This is progress? I know I’m not alone in this, either – many folks I know who had been suffering through successive Firefox betas were disillusioned with the quality...

Microsoft may have seen fit to boast about the 2.35 million downloads its new Internet Explorer 9 browser received in its first 24 hours, but Mozilla's Firefox 4 has since essentially blown such figures out of the water. In fact, not only did Firefox 4 claim a million downloads in its first three hours and almost 7 million in its first day--surpassing by far Internet Explorer 9--but by Wednesday, the day after its official release, it had already claimed almost 2 percent of the worldwide Internet browser market, according to research firm StatCounter.

Over the last two weeks Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Firefox have all released new versions of their browsers. But the most hype has circled around Firefox 4's launch yesterday. People have been scrambling for the new browser. After just over 24 hours, Firefox 4 has already been downloaded more than 9 million times. And with good reason. It's the most popular alternative to Internet Explorer, and it's the browser of choice for those who want a customizable web experience. If you're still using Internet Explorer, we came up with five great reasons to make the switch to Firefox 4.

The Web has changed a lot since Marc Andreessen revolutionized the Internet with the introduction of his Netscape browser in the mid-1990s. That's why he's betting people are ready to try a different Web-surfing technique on a new browser called RockMelt. The browser, available for the first time Monday, is built on the premise that most online activity today revolves around socializing on Facebook, searching on Google, tweeting on Twitter and monitoring a handful of favorite websites. It tries to minimize the need to roam from one website to the next by corralling all vital information and favorite services in...

I'm usually pretty good at answering my own PC/web questions, but no matter what size I set the FF cache too, every time I go to the same web site, the same images are re-loaded over and over again, each and every visit. Is there a way to get around this? Maybe type about:config in the address bar and tinker with a setting in there? Any suggestions most appreciated.

The internet of the future is likely to look very different from the distinct pages and sites we visit today – that was the message as Microsoft launched the latest version of their much-maligned Internet Explorer web browser. And while every major manufacturer always claims that theirs is a revolutionary product, the company that remains best known for Windows and Office might just be on the right track this time. Headlines around the world greeted IE9 as Microsoft’s most ambitious yet, while others called it revolutionary. Respected British website Techradar.com went so far as to call it “ie-mazing”. Almost since...

Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT)’s Internet Explorer has staged a comeback in the browser war, reversing a trend of declining market share by posting two consecutive months of usage share gains against chief rivals Firefox and Chrome. For several months, Microsoft had been losing ground in the browser category. According to Web metrics firm Net Applications, Internet Explorer’s usage share numbers had been falling steadily for some time now; in September, IE had 65.71 percent of usage share last September, according to Net Applications, and had fallen all the way to 59.75 percent in May. But in both June and July, Microsoft’s browser...

Everyone should be aware of the tool in Firefox called the WOT (Web of Trust). This is a tool that Firefox users can download to rate websites as safe or warn people if a website is malicious. This is a great tool to promote Conservative websites, such as Free Republic. The liberals, such as DU use this tool to rate down sites and get them blocked by search engines. We should try to counter this. It is also a good way to have other resources rated. Link to the Firefox tool: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3456/

  • Devious ‘Tabnapping’ Attack Hijacks Browser Tabs

Traditional phishing attacks are reasonably easy to avoid, just don’t click links in suspicious e-mails (or, for the really paranoid, any e-mail). But Firefox Creative Lead Aza Raskin has found a far more devious way to launch an attack — by hijacking your unattended browser tabs. The attack works by first detecting that the tab the page is in does not have focus. Then the attacking script can change the tab favicon and title before loading a new site, say a fake version of Gmail, in the background. Even scarier, the attack can parse through your history to find sites...

Officials here said the Russian Defense Ministry has been overseeing development of a new fighter-jet for the Air Force. They said the platform marked a fifth-generation combat aircraft titled T-50 and designed for long-range attack missions. "Flight tests of the fifth-generation fighter are continuing successfully," Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said. In a statement on April 20, Putin expressed satisfaction with flight-tests of the T-50. The fighter-jet completed its maiden flight, which lasted 47 minutes, in January 2010. The T-50 has been developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau in a project launched in 2002. In mid-2009, officials said, the Defense...

Hi All, I just got back from 10 days abroad and noticed my Firefox at home was acting oddly. My preferred way to go to many websites is simply to type their name into the location bar, and then let Google's "I'm feeling lucky" feature take me to the actual site. I realize this might not be the most conventional way to do it (sure, I could have bookmarks etc.), but it's they way I like to do it.. I also use KDE's Alt-F2 launcher to start programs. Today I noticed that this great feature of Firefox (combined with Google...
