Thanks to a special freepmailer for pointing to this article. # SNIPPET: "Computerworld - An add-on that Microsoft silently slipped into Mozilla's Firefox last February leaves the browser open to attack, Microsoft's security engineers acknowledged earlier this week. One of the 13 security bulletins Microsoft released Tuesday affects not only Internet Explorer (IE), but also Firefox, thanks to a Microsoft-made plug-in pushed to Firefox users eight months ago in an update delivered via Windows Update. "While the vulnerability is in an IE component, there is an attack vector for Firefox users as well," admitted Microsoft engineers in a post to...

Add-ons blocked because of serious security vulnerability for Firefox users. A war has been raging between different web browsers for a long time now. The two main combatants in the battle are Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Firefox from Mozilla. Microsoft is still in the lead in marketshare with IE, but Firefox is grabbing up a large portion of the market for itself. Firefox hit the one billion download mark in August and has 32% of the browser market while IE holds about 60% of the market. Mozilla and Microsoft are working together on a security flaw in some Microsoft add-ons...

A site claims that there is a "fundamental problem" with Firefox updates using the OS X operating system. Linux and Windows operating systems are affected too. Paul Sture says that if you run as a non-admin user on OS X, Firefox grays out the check for updates menu item and doesn't automatically tell you when security updates are available. Firefox, he says, only allows Update Checking when you have write access to the Firefox application although most people do their daily work on a non-privileged account. He says he's pointed out the flaw to the Secure IT Foundation. There's more...

Mountain View, California - Mozilla has released an update to Firefox that fixes a security flaw discovered in the last week. The company has moved fast to make Firefox 3.5.1 available for Windows, Mac, and Linux users as a free download. It resolves a Just-in-Time (JIT) JavaScript compiler flaw in version 3.5 which left users at risk of memory corruption and malware infection. Last week, "SBerry" posted proof of concept code that exploited the way Firefox 3.5 processes JavaScript code when handling FONT tags in HTML. "In certain cases after a return from a native function, such as escape(), the...

... until Mozilla can ship an update to quash this bug, Security Fix is posting instructions to help readers protect themselves from this vulnerability.~~snip~~ Fortunately, there is a relatively easy fix for this that can be reversed once Mozilla issues a patch. To disable the vulnerable component, open up a new Firefox window and type "about:config" (without the quotes) in the browser's address bar. In the "filter" box, type "jit" and you should see a setting called "javascript.options.jit.content". You should notice that beside that setting it reads "true," meaning the setting is enabled. If you just double-click on that setting,...

An unpatched memory corruption flaw in the latest version of Firefox creates a means for hackers to drop malware onto vulnerable systems. Security notification firm Secunia reports that the security bug (which it describes as extremely critical) stems from errors in handling JavaScript code. The flaw has been confirmed in the latest 3.5 version of Firefox, released in late June. Older versions of the popular alternative browser might also be affected, Secunia warns. Exploit code has been uploaded onto recently revived security exploit website milw0rm, a factor that could hasten the development of more attack code. Secunia advises Firefox users...

"It's seriously bugged is what it is," posted Jeremy in a July 1 post on hothardware.com." "My Firefox load time went from a heartbeat or two to 50-60 seconds. First time, second time, didn't matter if it was pre-fetched or not. Numerous other people having the same issue as well judging from their forum. "I've seen the same issue on both on my Vista x64 machine and my XP machine at work," added Jeremy."I downgraded both and am back to happy browsing. Hopefully Firefox 3.5.1 hits soon and resolves whatever the issue is." TGDaily.com is reporting that Mozilla Firefox 3.5.1...

Mozilla's developers have announced plans to add application multithreading to Firefox over the next two years, a feature already partially enabled in its main rivals, IE8 and Google Chrome. As well as allowing the software to take advantage of multicore microprocessors to boost responsiveness, the enhancement would also improve browser stability, the company said in a news blog on the subject. The unnamed project will happen in several phases, with the phase one 'bootstrap' due to complete by the middle of this July. Further phases will add and debug more complex elements of the new browser, with phase two due to...

Firefox's ad-removal tool is its most popular add-on. Now its creator wants to let you use it ethically. First, a confession: I read the Web without ads. For years now, I've been using Adblock Plus, a plug-in for Firefox that eliminates nearly every ad I encounter online. I understand the irony here; Slate and other publications I've written for make money from advertisements, so my blocking them is akin to an airline pilot siphoning fuel from his tank before he takes off. And now, by discussing the appeal of ad-blocking software in this column, you could say I'm making matters...

Microsoft Corp's next version of Windows is stirring fresh complaints of anticompetitive behavior from rivals who say the new version of the operating system gives unfair advantage to Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser, the Financial Times reported. "Our initial review suggests this is a blatant use of the Windows operating system to change the market dynamics of browser usage," Mitchell Baker, chairperson of Mozilla, developer of open-source Firefox browser, told the paper.

Features in Internet Explorer and Firefox run neck and neck. Will a victor emerge? It may come down to convenience.Every day I sit at my computer and open two browsers: Firefox and Internet Explorer (first 6, then 7 and, as of late, 8). ... Firefox opens my Yahoo and Gmail mail accounts. Internet Explorer is aimed at my banking and stock trading accounts. ... ... I made up my mind to drop Firefox altogether. [Then] Yesterday morning, I found out that Firefox released the 3.5 beta (4), and many features are the same as in IE8. IE8 has a feature...

6 Reasons Why Firefox Dude May Want to Switch to Chrome Apr. 21st, 2009 By David Pierce I did it. About a week ago, I took the plunge. I made Google Chrome my default browser, and now do almost everything within Chrome. I do miss Firefox every once in a while (after all, we were in a relationship for quite a while, and over a number of version changes), but I’m glad I’ve moved on. Chrome is only getting better – rolling out more features, making existing features work even better, and generally getting faster and awesome-er. Here are the...

Frum's embrace of various liberal positions doesn't make him a dummy, or an unskilled writer, or someone who should be excluded from a necessary conversation among self-identified conservatives about the direction of their wayward movement. It just makes him rather hubristic to envision himself as a general giving marching orders, or as a pope issuing excommunications, to a movement he no longer has much use for.
