If you have XP Pro (only pro) you can fix your reservebandwidth from default of 20% to 0%. Type GPedit.msc in run. 1)Under the Local Computer Policy, click Administrative templates. 2) on the right double click Network. This opens the tree on the right side. 3)Now double click the Qos Packet Scheduler. Now Double click Limit reservable bandwith. This will open the properties box for the Qos packet scheduler. Under the settings tab (which will open by default) click enable, then change the % from 20 to 0. Now windows won't slow down your broadband! Bad windows, bad, bad! There...

Forty-five days and some 13 million downloads after its official release, Mozilla's Firefox browser is showing undeniable momentum--but does it signal the beginning of the end to Microsoft's monopoly over the basic software used to access the Web? Even as Firefox gathers steam, powerful brakes are poised to kick in that could limit its long-term growth: Interoperability has long dogged non-Microsoft browsers, which are often glitchy on some Web sites. Firefox claims some significant progress on this front, but a handful of sites, including Microsoft's Windows Update site, are still inaccessible. In addition, Microsoft's deep hooks in corporate IT departments...

FireFox Burns Internet Explorer’s Market Share  An extended explanation on why Internet Explorer is insecure     How Spyware Took The Next-Gen Threat Crown (On The Internet's No #1 Threat Today MUST READ!!!) -- My own opinion is that anything that takes over your private computer without your informed consent should be illegal and that anyone distributing such programs and those paying to have it distributed (the engine that drives this train) should be held criminally responsible. A politician who would undertake such legislation would have an instantaneous, nation-wide following... a political hero (are you listening out there?)    Browser...

I have just switched over to Firefox as my main browser and it works great especially after I did the "about:config" tip from KoRn on another thread. The problem is that I don't get the color change for visited URL's. If I go to Tools>Options>General>Fonts & Colors it says I have blue unvisited links, which I do and can change the color of them, and red visited links which is not occurring.I'm guessing that there's something that I need to toggle in "about:config" but I'm about blind from scanning through them. I found the ones for the colors themselves but can't...

Remember those days back in 1995, when Netscape Navigator was synonymous with internet? That was the time when Microsoft’s Internet Explorer entered the market for a head-on collision with the Netscape Navigator. That was Browser War –I. Now the battle was reignited by the fire of FireFox, internet browser of Mozilla. This is the beginning of the Browser War –II. And it appears that this time Microsoft is losing it. Internet Explorer is rapidly losing market share. OneStat.com a company in Amsterdam had conducted a worldwide survey in late November. The survey shows that Internet Explorer's share dropped to less...

Browser Wars Thu Dec 16, 3:00 AM ET Michael Desmond Are you sick and tired of Internet Explorer? Have you grown weary of the constant vulnerabilities and patches? Do you scratch your head at sudden program lockups and crashes? Are you dismayed that Microsoft hasn't lifted a finger to improve or enhance IE since it buried Netscape's Navigator browser at the dawn of the century? Yeah, me too. Welcome to Internet Explorer backlash. For the first time since Microsoft launched its flagship browser in 1995, Internet Explorer is actually losing market share. Research firm WebSideStory reported that the enormous chunk...

Fake sites could soon have legit addresses and security icons A newly reported security problem in Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) web browser allows attackers to create a fake website that looks exactly like a genuine site. The vulnerability lets an attacker display any website while the address bar in IE will display a trusted web address, for example https://www.paypal.com/, and even show the icon indicating SSL (secure socket layer) security, security researchers warned on Thursday. The issue could result in more sophisticated phishing scams, a prevalent type of online attack that typically combines spam email messages and web pages that...

December 19, 2004 New Microsoft Patch Blocks Firefox Downloads by Scott Ott (2004-12-19) -- Microsoft Corp. today released a new security patch for its Internet Explorer (IE) web browser which prevents users from accidentally or intentionally downloading the new free, open-source Firefox browser from The Mozilla Foundation. "Firefox is a dangerous and contagious browser that could seriously jeopardize marketshare ," said an unnamed Microsoft spokesman. "Unless consumers take action to block Firefox, it could speed up web surfing and return control of user computers to the users themselves." The source added that Internet Explorer is a superior product because it...

Microsoft bought anti-spyware technology this week to protect its Internet Explorer browser from surging rivals like Mozilla's Firefox, a group of Gartner analysts said Friday. Thursday, Microsoft announced that it was purchasing the New York-based Giant Company Software, and would release a beta edition of a spyware-fighting program for Windows 2000 and XP within 30 days. Spyware is the broad term that defines software installed without users' knowledge or permission, and covers everything from relatively benign adware that tracks Web sites visited to malicious key loggers that record every keystroke in the hope of stealing passwords and financial account info....

Among the online world’s hottest commodities, nothing sizzles quite like Firefox, the new Web browser by the California-based Mozilla Foundation that’s causing sleeplessness in and around Seattle, Microsoft Corp’s home turf. Since Version 1.0 of Firefox went public about a month ago, about 10 million Internet Explorer users have seen the white-hot light and switched, gnawing off a huge chunk of IE's dominant market share (about 4 percent of it) while easing their security concerns. (This week, Microsoft announced five new security flaws in IE, bringing the total this year to 45 — or about 43 more than many people...

FIREFOX is a classic overnight success, many years in the making. Published by the Mozilla Foundation, a nonprofit group supporting open-source software that draws upon the skills of hundreds of volunteer programmers, Firefox is a Web browser that is fast and filled with features that Microsoft's stodgy Internet Explorer lacks. Firefox installs in a snap, and it's free. Firefox 1.0 was released on Nov. 9. Just over a month later, the foundation celebrated a remarkable milestone: 10 million downloads. Donations from Firefox's appreciative fans paid for a two-page advertisement in The New York Times on Thursday. Until now, the Linux...

Here's something for broadband people that will really speed Firefox up: 1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries: network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading. 2. Alter the entries as follows: Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true" Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true" Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once. 3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name...

Citing security risks, a state university is urging students to drop Internet Explorer in favor of alternative Web browsers such as Firefox and Safari. In a notice sent to students on Wednesday, Pennsylvania State University's Information Technology Services department recommended that students download other browsers to reduce attacks through vulnerabilities in the Microsoft software. The university said "media reports" and a string of warnings by Carnegie Mellon University's Computer Emergency and Response Team led to its recommendation. "We're not telling people to wipe off IE, because you need IE to do operating-system updates," Robin Anderson, a spokeswoman for Penn State's...

A flaw in Sun Microsystems' Java software has highlighted the difficulty the company faces as flocks of tech novices start to turn to it for support. Sun disclosed a serious security flaw in its Java virtual machine (JVM) software last month. The rare problem, which affects Sun's plug-in for running Java on a variety of Web browsers and operating systems, could allow a virus to spread through PCs running both Microsoft Windows and Linux. A flaw-free version of the JVM software is available on Sun's Web site, and the company is encouraging people to swap it out. But some users...

If browsers were baseball, Mozilla's Firefox would be the Boston Red Sox. For years, Mozilla (and Netscape before it) has been the underdog that success has eluded. But looking at Firefox now, a little over a week since it bowed in final form, the word that comes to mind is believe. Firefox 1.0 offers everything most people need to browse the Web. AOL has unveiled a prototype of its revived Netscape Browser, which serves as a test bed for several new features. The new Netscape is based on Firefox, but with a twist - it includes support for switching to Microsoft's IE engine. BetaNews has also learned that Netscape's development was not done in-house by AOL, but rather outsourced to Canadian software firm Mercurial Communications. The Netscape prototype is built upon Mozilla Firefox 0.9.3, which means it utilizes the same user interface toolkit and Gecko browser engine. The browser's theme has been redone to match Netscape's traditional green style and, as expected,...

There's been a seismic shift during November, with Firefox emerging as the first credible competitive threat in a decade to Microsoft's aging Internet Explorer browser for Windows.
