Vanity: Can Democrats Get to 60 Senate Seats in 2028

Right now the Democrats have 54 Senate seats. There are two elections not decided yet: Alaska and Mississippi. Suppose they win those then we get to 56. In 2028, the GOP has to defend 19 Senate seats vs 15 Democratic seats. The GOP seats are from: AL, AK, AR, FL, ID, IN, IA, KS, KY, LA, MO, NC, ND, OH, OK, SC, SD, UT, and WI. It is very conceivable the Democrats can flip four of those from perhaps the Midwest seats and NC. I do not see any vulnerable Democratic seats except for perhaps NV and GA. Fetterman is...

Vanity: Will Senate Democrats use the "Nuclear Option" to eliminate fillerbuster?

One option that is not being widely discussed is the Senate Democrats actually changing the rules of the Senate to eliminate the filibuster; the "nuclear option" discussed when Democrats were filibusting Bush II's judicial appointments. It appears some of the groundwork is being laid for this move with comments about how "undemocratic" the filibuster is from Barney Frank, Biden and the leftist chattering class. As I mentioned before on the ZeroCare debate, this is the best and perhaps only opportunity for the Democrats to impose socialized health care or as with this bill screw up the private insurance so much...

Compromise is not always good, argument is not always bad

"We have lifted ourselves above politics," declared West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd after the "fantastic fourteen" agreed to a compromise on filibusters (note: quotation marks are intended to convey sarcastic scorn). Here's a rule of thumb nobody's bothered to lay out because it's so obvious: When someone like Byrd says he's lifted himself above politics, watch your wallet. Now, as they say, the Senate can get back to "the people's business." Which means, as far as Byrd is concerned, getting back to the business of transferring the federal treasury wholesale to the state of West Virginia. But enough about the...
