Had Lora Hunt been eating a sandwich or dialing her cell phone instead of polishing her nails when she struck and killed a motorcyclist, she would not now stand convicted of reckless homicide, her lawyer contends. But prosecutor Mike Mermel said there's a big difference between polishing nails and other forms of distracted driving. "It is not the same as biting a sandwich … it's a voluntary disablement," he said. "She might as well have been in the back seat making a sandwich."

A Sudbury, Mass. man is facing another drunk driving charge after he allegedly drove under the influence to a Vermont prison to serve a two-day sentence for an earlier drunk driving offense. Timothy Carney, 42, appeared Tuesday between 4 and 5:30 p.m. in the Windsor District Court, where a judge imposed the sentence and ordered him to report to the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield by 5:30 p.m., said Deputy State Attorney David Cahill.

A man with at least 19 driver's license suspensions has been arrested in connection with an October hit-and-run crash in Pompano Beach that killed one man and injured another, the Broward Sheriff's Office said Wednesday. Paul H. Paraison, 28, of Pompano Beach, was arrested Monday after a traffic stop along the 1200 block of North Federal Highway.

A Muslim bus driver stunned passengers when he pulled over and started praying in the aisle - with the engine still running. The driver parked without warning then rolled out a fluorescent jacket as an improvised prayer mat. He took off his shoes, knelt down facing Mecca, and began to chant. SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A Springfield Mass Transit District bus driver has received a one-day unpaid suspension for wearing a pink necktie to help raise awareness for breast cancer. The driver, 46-year-old William Jones, had to serve the suspension, but his action led the transit district to agree that employees could wear pink on Fridays October in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Jones, who said he planned to file a formal grievance, said he has had a number of relatives who have battled cancer, including a grandmother, a sister, several cousins and a niece.

The 4-year-old Stoughton girl run down in a crosswalk by an elderly driver yesterday has died, Norfolk District Attorney William R. Keating’s office announced this morning. Diya Patel was hospitalized in a coma at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, but did not survive the night after being hit on her scooter by an 89-year-old woman at the wheel of a Toyota Camry on Washington Street in Stoughton late yesterday morning.
