A ban on chocolate milk may be too much for the governor of Connecticut to stomach.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy (D) signed what the Hartford Courant called “the toughest assault weapons legislation in the nation” last year. It required owners of semi-automatic firearms to register all firearms designated as “assault weapons” with the state government, along with any “high capacity” magazines they may own, by December 31, 2013. The Malloy regime expected Connecticut residents to register somewhere between 372,000-400,000 firearms, and roughly 2 million firearm magazines that held more than 10 rounds before January 1. What they got instead was defiance.

The debate over legalizing marijuana for medical and even recreational purposes is blurring conservative and liberal lines. With polls showing a slight majority of Americans now supporting the legalization of the drug, especially younger voters, and billionaire campaign financiers such as George Soros funding the pro-pot movement, a number of candidates are finding themselves at odds with their own party's positions. Ari Fleischer, a White House press secretary for President George W. Bush, called marijuana "a sleeper issue," in the upcoming campaign and noted its trickiness, telling The Wall Street Journal, "All of a sudden the ground is shifting, and...

As Connecticut is in the midst of a very serious situation regarding guns and gun registration, Governor Dannel Malloy attended a town meeting this week to address constituents at John Barry Elementary School in Meriden, Connecticut. During that event, a pro-gun citizen, who has opposed the legislation signed into law by Malloy, which requires gun owners to register their semi-automatic rifles and high-capacity magazines or be considered felons, asked how Malloy could push legislation that is against law abiding gun owners while abolishing the death penalty and offered early release for violent criminals. Malloy’s answer was not to point to...

As recently as 1998, New York State’s Republican party controlled the governorship, a United States Senate seat, and the mayor’s office in Manhattan. Today, it is greatly diminished, with its sole beachhead of influence in the state senate, where it shares a majority with four independent Democrats. In contrast, the Working Families party (WFP), a 15-year-old left-wing, union-fueled group with just 20,000 members, now holds the whip hand over much of the dominant Democratic party in New York — and is already spreading its wings to other states. The WFP not only was a major force behind Bill de Blasio’s...

The federal government is back and open for business. After a 15-day shutdown, Congress passed legislation Wednesday night to fund the government and avert a default, without dismantling the Affordable Care Act. In response to the deal, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy issued a statement Thursday morning: “While I am pleased that an agreement to end the shutdown has been reached, the fact remains that this is no way to run a government. We simply cannot go from one manufactured crisis to the next, and that’s all this deal does – put off the hard choices until a later date, so...

Three Democratic governors who successfully pushed their state legislatures to toughen gun laws are asking Congress to do the same. “We need the federal government to take the lead and enact reasonable laws to reduce gun violence by, at a minimum, ensuring that more gun purchasers pass a federal background check,” Govs. Andrew Cuomo of New York, Martin O’Malley of Maryland and Dan Malloy of Connecticut wrote in a letter to Senators on Wednesday. “The American people are clear on this issue – more than 90% support background checks prior to gun purchases. They understand that if you can’t pass...

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy compared the head of the National Rifle Association to “clowns at the circus” for his comments about the state’s new gun laws. Mr. Malloy, a Democrat, signed legislation last week that requires background checks on all firearm purchases, bans magazines with more than 10 rounds of ammunition and adds more than 100 weapons to the state’s ban on semiautomatic rifles often called assault weapons. NRA Chief Executive Officer Wayne LaPierre said the legislation only makes “the law books thicker for the law-abiding people.” “The criminals, the drug dealers, the people that are going to do horror...

The Second Amendment got attacked this week from three sides, leaving gun owners scrambling to find safe ground. While President Obama has lost momentum for federal gun-control laws, he has picked up victories with his allies in blue states and at the United Nations. After Thursday, Connecticut should consider changing its state nickname from the “Constitution State” to the “Unconstitutional State” after Gov. Dannel Malloy signed an extremely restrictive gun-control law. The bill passed the state House Thursday morning and the Senate on Wednesday. Before the Newtown tragedy, the Brady Campaign determined that Connecticut was the fifth highest-rated state for...

Opposition from state veterans groups prompted Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to reverse his support Monday for using state funds to repair a New Haven community center that houses a Communist newspaper. Malloy, whose administration has gone back and forth on whether to finance $300,000 in renovations for the New Haven People's Center, issued a brief statement during the State Bond Commission meeting before moving on to the next agenda item without discussion. And one of the two Republican legislators who spearheaded opposition to the funding, Rep. Sean J. Williams of Watertown, said after he would ask the Democratic governor's administration...

Continuing a fiat governance style that is right out of the Obama playbook, Democratic and Working Families Party Governor Dannel Malloy issued two executive orders yesterday that will force daycare providers and home healthcare workers in Connecticut to join unions. The orders, his ninth and tenth since taking office in January, will force the state’s 4,000 daycare providers to add over $1 million in dues to union coffers, and remove the right to secret ballot election for these workers by instituting a card check process.

A conservative group and several Republican lawmakers is filing a legal challenge to the newly adopted state budget, alleging that its assumption of $2 billion of yet-to-be-determined savings violates the Connecticut constitution."In 1992 the people of Connecticut overwhelmingly voted for [a] balanced budget amendment as a protection against the kind of shenanigans and abuse we saw this week at the state capitol," said Tom Scott, a former lawmaker who founded the Roger Sherman Liberty Center, the conservative think tank behind the lawsuit. The budget, approved by the state House and Senate earlier this week and signed by Gov. Dannel P....

HARTFORD (AP) — Devotees of coupons and discounts are angry at Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's proposal to slap a new sales tax on the original price of a good or service rather than the discounted price. Ending the sales tax exemptions for coupons, discounts and automobile trade-ins are among tax exemptions Malloy has proposed ending to help close the state's projected $3.5 billion deficit. For example, the tax would be imposed on the $30 price of a blouse, not the $15 sales price. Gina Juliano learned firsthand after she lost her job in 2009 as a vice principal in the...

Thursday was the first full day of work for the transition team of Dannel P. Malloy, the Democratic who is certain he was the winner in the Connecticut governor’s race. It was also the first full day of work for the transition team of Thomas C. Foley, the Republican candidate, who claimed victory in the same race. Clearly, one of these men is going to be terribly disappointed. But when and how that will become clear is still, well, unclear.... Sometime on Thursday, the state’s top election official, Susan Bysiewicz, the Democratic secretary of state, is supposed to announce the...
