Immigration is a complex problem. So is the long-term question of how the United States should handle the influx of tens of thousands of children from Central America. Beyond the legal mandates, we owe them basic human decency. On the other hand, to say that they should all simply stay here for good begs big questions about encouraging more children to make this journey, and the rights of all the people abroad who are waiting their turn in line. Unless you believe in open borders, it’s all thorny. What seems right for an individual child can seem wrong systemwide. But...

In a stunning security breach, the giant American flags at the top of both sides of the Brooklyn Bridge were replaced by white flags overnight, cops said. The two new flags appear to be American flags that were painted over white — the traditional symbol for “surrender” — and were flying Tuesday morning from both towers. ... The NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit will is replacing the white flags with American flags as they set up a crime scene

A Stamford High School teacher accused of threatening to fail an 18-year-old student if he did not have sex with her and providing him and a friend with marijuana, turned herself over to police early Thursday. Danielle Watkins, 32, of Fort Point St., Norwalk, was charged with two counts of sexual assault, two counts of sale of marijuana and one count of risk of injury to a minor ... A day after the student reported the allegations, police executed a search warrant of Watkins's car during a motor vehicle stop in Norwalk. During the stop, police said Watkins tried to...

n 1980, under the first administration of Governor Jerry Brown, California decided it wasn’t going to build any more power plants but would follow Amory Lovins’ “soft path,” opting instead for conservation and renewable energy. By 2000, with the new digital economy sucking up electricity, a drought in the Pacific Northwest cut hydropower output and the state found itself facing the Great California Electrical Shortage. You know what happened next. For weeks the Golden State struggled to find enough electricity to power its traffic lights. Brownouts and blackouts cascaded across the state while businesses fired up smoke-belching diesel generators to...

First speaking to the choir at a roundtable discussion attended by area female political leaders, they then moved over to the party’s campaign headquarters on Fitch Street. Schultz, a congresswoman from Florida, said when she returns home to her district, “no one asks us when are we going to get back to investigating Benghazi; no one asks us when the heck are you finally going to sue Barack Obama; no one says please vote for the 57th time to repeal the Affordable Care Act and take my health care away, yet those are the things that reach the top of...

The number of Americans who see illegal immigration as the nation's most pressing problem has spiked from 3 per cent to 17 per cent since May, according to a Gallup poll released Wednesday. That percentage now tops government corruption, the U.S. economy, jobs, health care and every other hot-button issue, driven by a flood of tens of thousands of illegal immigrant children pouring across the U.S.-Mexico border. 'We are all connected. We can't just build a wall or a fence and say no more,' Georgia Democratic Rep. John Lewis tweeted on Tuesday. 'This is America. Our doors are open.' The...

Democrats hold one thing — and one thing only — sacred, and that is abortion. Our diplomats may be murdered abroad, the rule of law may be grossly violated at home, the First Amendment may be written off as just another roadblock on the freeway to utopia, but abortion will always have for them a uniquely holy status — even if that means employing unholy methods to facilitate it. Thus Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut has introduced a bill, cosponsored by a majority of Senate Democrats, that would purport to strip states of their ability to impose even the most...

Weeks after an apparent case of politically motivated Internet censorship at a Connecticut high school, officials are still blaming the incident on technical malfunctions — even though evidence suggests human culpability. On May 27, shortly before his graduation, Andrew Lampart, an 18-year-old senior at Nonnewaug High School in Woodbury, Conn., set out to research gun control on a school computer in order to fulfill an assignment for a basic law course. He found that the website for the National Rifle Association was blocked, while websites supporting gun control remained accessible. Over the next five days, Lampart spent more time on...

When asked by CNSNews.com on Wednesday whether legalizing illegal aliens would help the unemployed in the United States, Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D.-Conn.) countered that that was a “a gotcha question” and declined to answer it. DeLauro was speaking outside the U.S. Capitol at a rally for the unemployed.

Washington – Latino advocates are reacting with disappointment, dismay and anger over the Malloy administration’s decision to reject a federal request to house up to 2,000 immigrant children from Central America at the Southbury Training School. “This is a humanitarian crisis and we are saddened that this was a missed opportunity to take a leadership position to help people seeking refuge,” said Werner Oyanadel of the Latino and Puerto Rican Affairs Commission. The commission, a legislative agency that makes recommendations for the advancement of the Latino and Puerto Rican community to the governor and state legislature, will hold a board...

The administration of Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy (D-WFP) has denied a request from federal officials to temporarily house up to 2,000 illegal immigrant children from Central America at a residence in his state for individuals with intellectual disabilities. ... According to Keith Phaneuf at CT Mirror, federal officials initially contacted the administration of Malloy, who is seeking a second term as governor this year, on July 3 regarding the possibility of a short-term lease to house, feed, and provide medical care to 1,000 to 2,000 of the unaccompanied illegal children who entered the U.S. through Mexico. The GSA reportedly asked...

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's administration has denied a request from federal authorities to temporarily house up to 2,000 migrant children from Central America at the Southbury Training School. The state Office of Policy and Management wrote in an email Monday that its concerns about the aging school's condition, the sensitive nature of caring for the developmentally disabled clients already there, as well as several legal and procedural hurdles, prevent Connecticut from assisting.

"The vacant property that the state of Connecticut has is too small to accommodate your needs (which clearly must be at least several hundred thousand square feet of building space alone) and is typically in a state of disrepair to the point where a certificate of occupancy would be difficult to obtain," Patrick M. O'Brien, assistant director of OPM's Bureau of Assets Management, wrote to an official at the U.S. General Services Administration's New England regional offices. "Indeed, many existing structures are beyond salvage and require environmental remediation and demolition."

America’s largest shotgun manufacturer has decided to move more of its business to the Republic of Texas. The news that O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc. chose not to expand their business in Connecticut shouldn’t really come as a surprise. States that have zealously pursued more restrictive gun control policies have seen their historically loyal firearm manufacturers begin an exodus to friendlier locales. Mossberg has decided to move more of its manufacturing process to Texas in light of Connecticut’s recent legislative attempts to demonize their industry; such as implementing a confiscation registration process, and outlawing future sales of various firearms categorized...

A transgender girl has been moved to Connecticut’s juvenile home for boys after she was accused of assault, the latest transfer of a troubled teenager who was sent to a psychiatric facility after supporters protested her confinement in a women’s prison without criminal charges. The Department of Children and Families said Sunday that the girl, identified only as Jane Doe, assaulted another youth and a staff member and destroyed property at the Children’s Psychiatric Center in Middletown on Saturday night. …

In spite of the recent tragedies of toddlers being killed or seriously hurt from being locked in a car, I guess it really isn't all that surprising that police are being extra-vigilant to protect kids from hot cars. Some cases, however, like that of a woman in Connecticut being criminally charged for leaving her daughter in a car, are downright ridiculous. (emphasis added) Officers were sent to 60 Middle Street on Tuesday where they said Christina Williams, 30, allegedly left her 11-year-old child inside a vehicle. Police said the interior temperature of the car was about 85 degrees at the...
