MATTI FRIEDMAN What I find most remarkable, having lived here for the past 23 years, is Israel’s bewildering and fast-moving society, the complexities of which are usually overlooked by observers. The question of what “Israeli” means in 2018, and how that’s changing and why, are particularly important ones at this anniversary. One good way to answer is to listen to pop music. But the singer in a shiny white gown who belted out a cover for a national TV audience was Sarit Hadad, one of Israel’s biggest pop stars and the queen of a genre called “Mizrahi,” or “eastern.” In...

In a sometimes-surreal interview with Greek television news channel Antenna, Antonios Pagourtzis, the father of the accused school shooter in Texas said that his son wasn’t a criminal, but a victim. His comment came during a telephone interview that the network broadcast on their newscast in Greece. Pagourtzis denied any responsibility in his son’s murderous rampage that killed ten people in a Texas school, criticizing people who said that there was blood on his guns. “The guns were clean,” Pagourtzis said in the interview, adding that he as hurt that a lot of the negative press about him was coming...

One of the more notable differences between Watergate and the metastasizing scandals involving the FBI, our intelligence agencies, and the Obama administration -- subjects of the soon-to-be-released inspector general's report -- is that the media exposed Watergate. They aided and abetted the current transgressions. By providing a willing and virtually unquestioned repository for every anonymous leaker (as long as he or she was on the "right" side) in Washington and beyond, the press has evolved from being part of the solution to being a major part of the problem. Gone are the days of the true "whistle-blower." Here are the...

Google’s unofficial motto has long been the simple phrase “don’t be evil.” But that’s over, according to the code of conduct that Google distributes to its employees. The phrase was removed sometime in late April or early May, archives hosted by the Wayback Machine show. “Don’t be evil” has been part of the company’s corporate code of conduct since 2000. When Google was reorganized under a new parent company, Alphabet, in 2015, Alphabet assumed a slightly adjusted version of the motto, “do the right thing.” However, Google retained its original “don’t be evil” language until the past several weeks. The...

The estranged brother of a former judge running for county commissioner contacted the Dallas Morning News earlier this week with a bold assertion: that the candidate, Vickers ‘Vic’ Cunningham, was a lifelong racist. Cunningham, a former criminal district judge, largely denied his brother’s accusations. But he confirmed to the newspaper that he had set up a living trust with a clause that would reward his children if they married a white person. “I strongly support traditional family values,” Cunningham, 55, told the Morning News. “If you marry a person of the opposite sex that’s Caucasian, that’s Christian, they will get...

The Mets are plagued with injuries once again. Tebow’s next move might not be to the majors, but he could be headed to the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate, the Las Vegas 51s. If the Mets promote Matt den Dekker to the majors, Tebow could fill the open spot on the 51s.

The new Magnum being a minority..? I sorta expected that. But then Higgins turned out a sassy, hot blonde British female. And then "Higgins" started roundhouse kicking KGB contractors in the jaw, knocking them out. And giving "Magnum" a whole lot of lip. And that's when I got very scared and angry.

Starbucks announced a new policy Saturday that allows anyone to sit in its cafés or use its restrooms, even if they don’t buy anything. The new policy comes five weeks after two black men who hadn’t bought anything were arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks. Company executives have said its previous policies were loose and ambiguous, leaving decisions on whether people could sit in its stores or use the restroom up to store managers. […] The company said anyone can use its cafés, patios or restrooms without buying anything, but it noted workers should still call the police if someone is...

The state stops the pop. A La Jolla, California hardware store has been forced to remove their popcorn machine they say was used to treat to customers for free over the last 25 years. President Trump, it is Time to Set a Deadline (60 days) for the Mueller Probe to end. In my opinion, Trump should give a speech and: 1) Set a deadline of July 19th for Mueller to complete his investigation and submit a report to the DOJ. If Mueller doesn't wrap it up by then, he will be fired. 2) Demand a letter of resignation from Sessions and Rosenstein on July 19th. 3) State on July 19th, he will pardon everyone Mueller has indicted. 4) Designate Rudy Giuliani as a US Attorney with Subpoena power to issue a report within 120...
