  • 1947: Rudolf Höss, Auschwitz commandant

Auschwitz killed 1-3 million people, by far the most of any camp. Mostly, Jews, but also, gypsies, gays, and some Soviet POWs. Hoss was convicted by the Communist Polish government, and old fashioned slow hanged using a step stool.

He was relieved of duties for a while for having an affair with a camp inmate, as sort of depicted in the movie. The movie showed everything from his point of view though. The movie doesn’t show what happened to Hoss.

Hoss is the protagonist of the recent movie “Zone of Interest”, which I recommend, and I assume that is why this was posted. The movie is about his life and his family, their garden, horseback riding, etc. It is basically a British production in German with subtitles.

I hope they extradite the scammers for felony murder from India or where ever, like they did those Nigerians who caused the 17-year-old kid to commit suicide.

He was told someone would come to get the money and they sent an Uber driver. He naturally thought she was part of the scam. He is probably guilty. However, part of the problem is they let these people pull these scams from India or Nigeria or whatever.

  • Apple River stabbing trial: Prosecutors play phone video

The jury asked to see the video again. Looking at the video, the girl and others were pointing for him to leave. By Miu’s testimony, he pushed the girl away with one hand and had a knife in his other hand. It was a small Swiss army knife, so they probably didn’t see it. The girl didn’t seem that close to him in the video. Then they went to the defense of the girl hitting Miu etc. The jury convicted him of battery for pushing or hitting the girl, implying that escalated the confrontation. So it could be viewed as manslaughter in that both sides had some role in starting the fight and he escalated it with the knife.

Or it could be self defense in that it was reasonable he felt threatened for his life or severe injury. He clearly was in a dangerous situation being attacked by multiple people in the water and his having a heart condition.

I don’t know what the prosecutions problem getting him held without bond for murder 1 and talking about 97 years for what he was convicted of.

No one responded, but if you look at the video it is way different from the way either side presented it at trial.

I hope this is OK. This isn't the latest and is from a TV station's youtube channel. However, I thought the video is key.

IMO it could be self defense or manslaughter. It is a maximum of 45 years for manslaughter in Wisconsin. When I grew up in Virginia, it was 5 years. The prosecutor said he could get 97 years if it runs consecutively. The way the prosecutor handled it is totally wrong. He might be guilty of something, but not murder and it shouldn't be some huge sentence for manslaughter etc. Apparently he has been in jail for 2 years, held without bond for first degree murder. He probably lost so much weight from the jail food, etc.

Looking at the video, I see him punched and knocked down. I don't see him surrounded like the defense implied. The girl was pointing for him to leave as was someone else. They were yelling stuff at him, but that was for less than a minute. According to the video and Miu's testimony, it seems like he pulled the knife before they started hitting him, and they apparently didn't notice.

I think it was self defense, but a verdict of manslaughter seems plausible. The kids were bad, but he didn't handle it well either.

In the comments on the videos, they are saying Miu will spend his last days in prison, which doesn’t seem accurate. He is 54, and not sure what he gets for manslaughter and 4 counts on endangerment. He has been in prison for 2 years. I guess they denied bail since he was charged with murder 1. That is probably why he lost all that weight, the prison food.

The area this happened is in WI, but about 40 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. Twin Cities’ suburbs aren’t huge like some bigger cities’.

It is pretty common to charge with more serious offenses in cases like this. Then the jury can convict of lesser. What is not common is charging with murder 1.

IMO opinion it is close whether he was guilty of manslaughter. However, I would never vote to convict, as those kids had it coming.

I think it was self defense and those brats got what they deserved. However, manslaughter doesn't seem unreasonable. Ridiculous to charge him with murder 1. They convicted him of 1 count of battery. Apparently, the jury believed Miu pushed, hit, or slapped the girl who was yelling at him, and that was partly responsible for him being attacked.

Yeah, you could make a case for manslaughter. I agree, it is a shallow river, but it would seem hard to find a cell phone dropped in the river, and it might not be usable anyway. So they probably thought he was there to ogle the girls. He maybe could have gotten away from them when they started calling him names.

Once he started stabbing, he maybe had to keep doing that, as at that point he could get hurt badly if they responded.

I watched the testimony of the “best friend” of the “victim”, the girl who got stabbed, and the black guy in the other group who filmed it. The defendant comes off way better than any of those.

Those kids got what they deserved. The kids in the group harassing him come off really badly as witnesses. They testified they were drunk and high. Sure, they never expected to get stabbed. The defendant does not seem like the kind of guy to get into physical fights or draw a knife unless he was afraid for his life. He was hit and choked and surrounded by 10 people calling him names. He probably didn’t handle the situation perfectly, but it is still self defense.

When someone stabs someone in a fight, it is never charged as premeditated murder. If it was a one on one fight, and the defendant started the fight, maybe 2nd degree murder. It wasn’t like Miu planned to start a fight as and excuse to stab people. Prosecutor maybe thinks any publicity is good publicity, and is fine with looking like a jerk on TV.

IMO, it would be reasonable to bring manslaughter charges, but it was self defense. Not sure how it could possibly by murder 1. Miu did not handle the situation ideally before and after the confrontation. He stabbed five people, threw the knife in the river, and did not tell people in his party what happened. He told the detective he took the knife from one of the attackers when he really got it from his pocket.

However, he was surrounded by several people and was hit, choked, and knocked into the water. He was beat up afterwards. They were in better shape, he was outnumbered like 10-1, and he had a heart condition. The fact that he stabbed five people indicates there were 5 people at close range.

The person killed had a blood alcohol level of .21 and the others injured were also legally drunk. The "victim's" friend admitted taunting Miu and said "when you hit a girl, there are consequences." Miu indicated he pushed away a girl, and then they started punching him.

It seem like he used the knife in self defense. That if he had not used it, he could have been badly beat up, and maybe killed from the blows, drowned, or died of a heart attack or stroke.

The prosecution asked them to consider lesser charges. I don't see how it could possibly be murder 1. It wasn't premeditated. Hard to see how it is even manslaughter. It isn't exactly how I would have handled the situation, but it seems like clear self defense.

I don't know why they prosecuted that way. Not a lawyer, but I don't see how a magistrate found probably cause. A grand jury usually does what the prosecutor wants, but don't see how they indicted him for murder 1. Maybe the prosecutor wanted to make sure Miu pleaded not guilty and there a big TV case to promote his political career, etc. Or maybe he was under political pressure or pressure from the kids' parents.

Of course, the Frederick Douglas Bridge.

The Star Spangled Banner says “no refuge shall save the hireling and the slave.” It means slave literally, as the British recruited slaves into their military with promises of freedom. The British did the same in the Revolutionary War and of course the Union in the Civil War.

The witness admitted changing his story to make the defendant look bad.

Also, that witness took a video of what happened. Supposedly part of the video was lost transferring it to the detective. That witness then dropped his self phone in the water and couldn’t recover the video. The defense implied the missing part was the early part showing what the kids were doing.

I don’t understand how they got a grand jury and a magistrate to agree to murder 1 charges. Maybe they were pressuring him to plead guilty, but I doubt they offered a plea to manslaughter. I could see charging him with voluntary manslaughter or whatever serious kind there was in that state.

Publicized trial going on now. Everyone involved seems white. Seems ridiculous to charge him with 1st degree murder and 4 counts of attempted murder. Maybe they offered to reduce it to 2nd degree murder. Seems like manslaughter or self defense. Defendant has heart condition. Group of teenagers were surrounding him and making fun of him. Seems like kids making fun or bullying in school. He was pushed into the water a couple of time. Stabbed 5 of them with 3 inch folding knife he had. The one killed had blood alcohol level of 0.22%. These days 0.08% is drunk driving. Defense argues it was 13 on 1 and they were probably in much better physical condition. Defendant may have overreacted, but no way was it 1st degree murder.
