I think you might be misunderstanding what observing Lent is about, and that may be why you aren’t seeing the value of it.
Lent is observed in solidarity with Christ’s 40 days in the desert. It is not now, nor has it ever been, intended to be a public display of observation.
One is instructed to search our souls to find something that we may choose to fast from or acts that we might do each day that would involve a sacrifice of self - quietly.
The point is that in so doing, we are made mindful in a physical way of Christ’s sacrifice for us, and hopefully be drawn closer to him day by day over the long 40 day slog, emerging on Easter weekend with a deeper understanding and closer relationship to our beloved Savior.
It requires thought, action, and trust me on this one, prayer.
It is essentially at its heart, a very spiritual exercise.
As such, it is a very personal decision whether or not to choose that particular journey throughout the Lenten season, and if you’re doing it right, none but maybe your immediate family should even be aware of what sacrifice you are making, whether it be fasting, community service, extra prayers, daily church services, abstaining from something we are too fond of, etc.
After many decades of doing so, at first with a child’s rudimentary understanding but as I matured, with a more spiritual one, I can tell you from experience that it does change you, it does actually strengthen you, and it does draw you into a closer relationship to God for at least as much time as it takes after Easter for the cares of the world to capture your attention again, though the determination to put God above all else increases with each Lenten season observed with true intention.
I can’t find any negative in entering into such a transformative season.
Blessings!
