The basic charge is undermining democracy by questioning the legitimacy of the election.

It seems to me a good defense would be showing why there are grounds for doubt.

In other words, an impeachment trial would be the perfect opportunity to bring up every irregularity in the election. Unlike the joint session, in a trial there can be witnesses and evidence. I understand there are lots of both.

Also, the CJ presides, so the Ds don’t have an automatic majority (50-50 tie w/o VP Harris). Bad as he is, I think he’d allow the respondent to present his case.
