  • Exit Polls: Latino voters tip balance

Republicans will never be able to out-pander Democrats in placating third-world immigrant blocs. That is absolutely a losing strategy, and a major reason for the widespread lack of enthusiasm among grassroots Republicans and Americans in general for his candidacy. Republicans (thank you, Karl Rove) have played the “we must win the Mexican/mestizo vote at all costs” game for a while now to their great, and unfortunately, probably lasting detriment.

Absolutely right. This notion that "there's no way we can deport 12 million illegals, so we might as well legalize them all" is a false argument. If we enforced our laws and denied them benefits, they'd deport themselves.

What a profound observation! Special interest groups care more about legislation that most directly impacts them than do others!

I would dispute your dismissal of the notion that immigration reform isn't a voting issue for "most Americans." When 70% in recent polls say that immigration is either a "serious" or "very serious" problem (before the ehtnic demonstrations, which no doubt have hurt their cause with voters), it certainly has become a "voting issue" for the vast majority of Americans.

The involuntary demographic transformation created by mass immigration is the #1 threat to not only the quality of life for most Americans, but to the survival of the America we know. It's taken many, many years of grass-roots efforts to bring the issue to the fore, but it finally seems to be gaining some traction.

Latin American Indian peasant immigrants are often praised by the open borders crowd as "pro family," and therefore a boon to this country. For one thing, that's not reason enough to let 'em all in, for another, the same can be said of most third-world immigrants. The lack of the rule of law in much of the underdeveloped and developing world means the extended family is the only institution within which trust can prevail and upon which you can count for defense and retribution.

Sure, many educated Indians speak English. But certainly not anything close to a quarter of the population is fluent in English, which is the proportion that would need to speak it to have any claim to being the largest English-speaking country in the world. And, while they assimilate better than some immigrant groups, that isn't saying much. The bottom line is current American citizens aren't better off with massive immigration from India or anywhere else.

Grant spoke out against the involuntary demographic transformation of this country through massive third-world immigration for many years. He and others who have labored in the trenches for so long deserve credit for finally getting
immigration control on the national agenda.

After many years of vigorously advocating unlimited immigration of foreign IT workers, many from India, and outsourcing as much work as possible, Bill and his one-world, screw-the-U.S. cohorts in the elite upper managements of corporate America have succeeded in getting many Indians to learn IT skills. The thousands of IT jobs that used to offer a comfortable middle-class wage here are mostly gone now. No young American wants to get into the field, and understandably so. This does not bode well for our standard of living and our national security.

The LA Times has been a cheerleader for the open-borders crowd, with almost daily pro-mass immigration articles and editorials. It apparently never occurred to them that the newcomers who would take over their city might not be big newspaper readers, certainly not of English-language papers.

Gates and the other executives who are constantly pushing for expanded immigration are elitists who regard themselves as "citizens of the world" first, not Americans. They don't give a damn that their wholesale importation of foreign technical workers---to say nothing of offshoring work whenever they can---has seriously compromised our national security and decimated the American middle class. The biggest reason few Americans want to study science and engineering today is because they see these jobs are being given to foreigners at sub-par wages. You can make better money in a whole host of jobs, even in teaching and skilled trades, than you can in engineering or systems development these days.

The author completely misreads why Americans aren't going to graduate school in engineering. A couple of decades ago engineers used got a comfortable middle class salary. Then with the flood of foreigners into American graduate schools, eager to work for peanuts in order to stay here, coupled with the vastly expanded H-1B program, the pay and status of engineering jobs plummeted. American kids were astute enough to see what was going on, and any of them with the smarts to be a good engineer went into law, medicine, real estate, business, etc.. Now we don't have a base of loyal American technical workers of all kinds. It will take a while before the damage will be repaired, if ever.

What we need is another LA-riots or Paris-is-burning event, or maybe another major terrorist attack in order to get real action. The slow burn of ethnic gang warfare on our citizens, to say nothing of the decomposition of the United States as a coherent nation, isn't getting the attention of the media and political elites (seemingly) safe in their gated communities.

Calling people concerned about mass immigration "racist" is a leftist-liberal tactic. And citing the usual blather about how Mexicans are just the new Italians and Irish is a flawed analogy on many counts. If you don't understand that, it's not worth debating with. Get your head out of the sand.

How long before we have a Paris situation on our hands because the illegals and/or their children feel they aren't "getting theirs" in this society (which, because of multiculturalism, they will despise)?

The French elites have a lot in common with those here. Both really believe the concept of the nation-state, defined by common values, language, history, traditions, and yes, blood, is passe. They thought the immigrant hordes would work for them cheaply and docilely forever and that they themselves would be safe in their gated communities.

Good point. NO is packed with recent African and Haitian immigrants---virtually all the cab drivers are. Unfortunately, it's also packed with a violence-prone underclass of black Americans. I've been there a number of times and have almost always had some disturbing experienced.
