PORTLAND, Maine --The Federal Emergency Management Agency spent nearly $274,000 to store thousands of bags of ice in Portland that were initially bought for hurricane relief efforts more than 1,500 miles away. In a letter to U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, a FEMA official said the agency stored 250 truckloads of ice at Americold storage facility in Portland after it was determined that the agency's supply of ice exceeded the demand following Hurricane Katrina. The agency said it was able to later use the ice for Hurricanes Ophelia and Rita, which came ashore after Katrina made landfall in late August....

DETROIT -- A conservative Christian group said it is considering a boycott of Ford Motor Co. products after the automaker said it would run corporate ads in gay and lesbian publications. The American Family Association, based in Tupelo, Miss., said Thursday that "the option of a boycott is now very much alive." The statement followed an announcement by Ford on Wednesday, Dec. 14, that it would run corporate ads in some gay and lesbian publications in 2006.

  • NYC: No Progess In Transit Talks As Midnight Strike Deadline Looms

With time ticking down, negotiators with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Transit Workers Union are continuing their last-ditch attempt to work out a contract agreement that would avert a debilitating strike before the midnight deadline. With half an hour to go until the deadline, MTA Chief Negotiator Gary Dellaverson appeared at a press conference to defend the MTA's position in the face of comments made half an hour before by TWU Local 100 President Roger Toussaint. At a 10:45 p.m. press conference, Toussaint criticized the MTA for failing to put forth what he said was an acceptable offer.

Any Freepers "folding@home"???? For those not familiar with F@H -> some diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer and even "mad cow" disease are believed to be linked to protein (mis)folding. A scientist team from Stanford University studies this phenomenon to try and find a cure to these diseases. To do this, they have designed a software (folding@home) which enables people to donate unused power from their computer to speed up medical research!

Bear Stearns analyst Andrew Neff predicted Apple would ship 14.1 million iPods in the December period. That's nearly half of the total shipped since the product debuted in late 2001. Shoppers are almost sure to feel the sting as well, especially on red-hot products like the black 4-gig nano and possibly for both versions of the video iPod, including the 30-gigabyte and 60-gigabyte models. "If you want to get an iPod for someone this Christmas, I'd advise you to get it now -- if you can find one," says Scott Anderson, merchandising manager for online retailer Crutchfield.

The holiday police are at it again--looking for violations of the nation's new policy of separating faith and civic celebrations. The same folks who will soon be trolling courthouse squares looking for manger scenes are now calling on Americans to have a happy Thanksgiving . . . but leave God out of it. School textbooks filled with revisionist history tell children that the first Thanksgiving was a celebration at which the Pilgrims thanked the Indians for teaching them how to survive the harsh New England climate and plant successful crops. God is simply not part of the picture. Some educators,...
