LANSING, MI – A whole lot of hydrogen is coming. Michigan was tapped by federal energy regulators to build a new clean hydrogen hub and develop regional supply chains for the fuel source. The goal is to create a market for fueling trucks and heavy-duty vehicles with clean hydrogen, which comes without any tailpipe emissions. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced $1 billion in federal funding for the project by Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen, known as MachH2. She said it would bring thousands of jobs to Michigan. - "Carbon emissions drive the greenhouse effect to cause global warming and the accelerating...

JAMESTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — An embattled western Michigan library targeted by residents opposed to LGBTQ materials on its shelves has lost most of its funding with the latest failure of the renewal of a property tax millage. The Patmos Library in Jamestown Township outside Grand Rapids will lose 84% of its $245,000 annual budget after the millage renewal was defeated in Tuesday’s general election. Unofficial results provided by the Ottawa County Clerk’s Office show 55.8% of voters rejected the 10-year millage proposal. It also lost in the August primary amid a campaign against LGBTQ materials in the library’s stacks.

Going back a few years "Thumb Puppet" was introduced on FR. When 'Stitches Obama' got a fat lip for supposedly playing basketball, a pic published put his left thumb out there and was totally freaky, funny stuff back then. He is left-handed and is totally in love with himself, so hence the narcissism funny stuff. It was scrubbed from Google immediately but has crept back into Internet lore over the years. Anyway, a pic from Politico shows another freaky thumb from this time, the vice-president. This time a right thumb, just being politically correct in suggesting 'handedness' has nothing to do with...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic lawmakers and independent Sen. Joe Lieberman said Sunday that military-style assault weapons should be banned and that a national commission should be established to examine mass shootings in the United States. The proposals were among the first to come from Congress in the wake of Friday's school shooting in Newtown, Conn. "Assault weapons were developed for the U.S. military, not commercial gun manufacturers," Lieberman said before a vigil Sunday night in Newtown. "This is a moment to start a very serious national conversation about violence in our society, particularly about these acts of mass violence," said...

MUSKEGON, MI -- Republican Gov. Rick Snyder signed historic right to work legislation Tuesday with thousands of protesters in the Capitol. Among them were at least five busloads of union members and supporters from the Muskegon area. All five buses left Tuesday morning and joined 10,000 other protesters in Lansing. Around 5:20 p.m., a bus full of disappointed protesters returned to the CIO hall on Western Avenue in downtown Muskegon. “It wasn’t fair at all. It was partisan politics to its finest,” Don Kosheba of Ravenna said of the day's activities in the state House and Senate. “It’s bad for...

Ben Stewart presents an on-the-ground look at anti-union events in Michigan Many arrived via the Walter Reuther Expressway from Detroit. Protestors donned hard hats, scrubs and overalls, chanting “Hey Hey! Ho Ho! Right to Work Has Got to Go!” As police lines held back the crowds of union members, and locked them out of the governors’ office building and the Capitol, the reality began to sink in. Michigan was going to be a “right to work” state. No more than fifty Tea Party activists were visible on Thursday. Some took this as a sign of weak public support for the...

LANSING, MI — Union members say their fight isn’t over after the House and Senate passed bills to make Michigan a right-to-work state. After a long day of protesting inside and outside the state Capitol, union leaders called on members to attend civil disobedience training on Saturday, and return to Lansing for more protests on Tuesday. “We’ve got to rebuild the broad social justice movement; I think this is going to energize people,” said United Auto Workers President Bob King. “All this administration has done is attack working people, so it’s our job to go out and talk in our...

LANSING, MI - The Michigan Legislature has begun passing right-to-work bills in a historic move that was announced just this morning. The Michigan House voted on House Bill 4054, passing it 58-52 mostly partly-line vote in the Republican-led chamber. The bill goes to the Republican-led Senate, which also is taking up right=to-work legislation today. Bills must pass both chambers and be signed by Gov. Rick Snyder to become law. The vote occurred after Democrats left the House in protest because Republicans would not suspend debate to acknowledge a lawsuit filed to reopen the Capitol, which as closed, according to police,...

LIVONIA, Mich. (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter of Michigan announced Saturday that he would not seek a sixth term through a write-in campaign after he failed to get enough signatures to get on the ballot. McCotter ran a little-noticed Republican presidential campaign last year before asking voters to re-elect him to his Detroit-area congressional seat. He surprised everyone late last month when he announced the Michigan secretary of state's office had determined he didn't have the 1,000 valid signatures needed to get on the Aug. 7 primary ballot, even though 2,000 signatures were turned in. A spokesman for the...

GRANTS PASS, Ore. (AP) -- Dozens of inmates ran whooping from a small town jail into the sunshine Wednesday after a cash-strapped county in Oregon's timber region was forced to release them amid budget cuts. The sheriff's office released 39 inmates, dropping the population at the jail in Grants Pass to 60 - half of them federal prisoners held on contract. "We had no other alternative based on our funding predicament," said Josephine County Undersheriff Don Fasching. "We are very concerned for public safety." About half of those released will finish their sentences on work crews. The rest were waiting...

Beyonce entered the stage wearing a glimmering silver outfit and hot pink shoes that matched her nails. The singer's...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The 2010 census missed more than 1.5 million minorities after struggling to count black Americans, Hispanics, renters and young men, but was mostly accurate, the government said Tuesday. The Census Bureau released an extensive assessment of its high-stakes, once-a-decade headcount of the U.S. population. Based on a sample survey, the government analysis has been a source of political controversy in the past over whether to "statistically adjust" census results to correct for undercounts, which usually involve minorities who tend to vote Democratic. The findings show the 2010 census over-counted the total U.S. population by 36,000 people, or...

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- President Barack Obama's announcement Wednesday that he supports gay marriage boosted the hopes of gay rights groups around the world that other leaders will follow his example. Vatican and other religious officials who oppose gay marriage stayed largely silent, while others denounced the president's position. Gay groups lauded what they said was the tremendous precedent set by Obama and hoped for changes in their own countries. In Latin America, for example, governments in Argentina and Mexico City have passed laws permitting gay marriage, but most do not. "This is incredibly important, it's excellent news. The United...

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- Adults who want sex-change surgery or hormone therapy in Argentina will be able to get it as part of their public or private health care plans under a gender rights law approved Wednesday. The measure also gives people the right to specify how their gender is listed at the civil registry when their physical characteristics don't match how they see themselves. Senators approved the Gender Identity law by a vote of 55-0, with one abstention and more than a dozen senators declaring themselves absent - the same margin that approved a "death with dignity" law...

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Beef Products Inc. will close processing plants in three states this month because of the controversy surrounding its meat product that critics have dubbed "pink slime," a company official said Monday. About 650 jobs will be lost when the plants close on May 25 in Amarillo, Texas; Garden City, Kansas; and Waterloo Iowa, company spokesman Rich Jochum said. A plant in South Sioux City, Neb., will remain open but run at reduced capacity. The South Dakota-based company blamed the closures on what it said were unfounded attacks over its lean, finely textured beef. During its processing,...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama's election-year vagueness on gay marriage is coming under fresh scrutiny. Education Secretary Arne Duncan broke ranks with the White House on Monday, stating his unequivocal support for same-sex marriage one day after Vice President Joe Biden suggested that he supported gay marriage as well. Obama aides worked to manage any political fallout. They said the back-to-back remarks by two top administration officials represented personal viewpoints and were not part of a coordinated effort to lay groundwork for a shift in the president's position. Obama aides also tried to use the latest flare-up in the...
