Terror Futures – Expiration of a Great Idea Terror futures expired Tuesday – before they got a chance to trade. That’s a shame. Pricing action of such a derivative could provide an early indicator that deadly information had surfaced in the market. And terror futures could be a means of providing insurance to small business and individuals who are exposed to the real financial risk of terrorism, but have few ways of protecting against it. Based on the details made public by the Department of Defense, the market would have allowed traders to take either side of a bet on...

As Americans settle in for the long haul in the war on terrorism and continue to lament the victims of September 11, 2001 and radical Islam's other recent casualties, the Council on Islamic-American Relations (CAIR), the most visible Muslim interest group in America, has other things on its mind. It seems the group is not happy with the way things are going for its members. CAIR's website lists, among other things, the latest "outrages" perpetrated against Muslim-Americans, and to date the site lists more than 1,700 "Anti-Muslim Incidents" that have been reported to the group as of early this year....

That Other Half of The Country -- Screw Em. The media's take that the next president will be hobbled by claims of illegitimacy misses the great opportunity awaiting Bush in the likely event he wins. This election crisis will leave whoever governs with unprecedented freedom to move toward his ideological base. In other words, a split electorate should be seen as a mandate by 49% of the population to tell the other 49% to go pound salt. The kernel of Gore’s 49% -- comprised of hard-core liberals and air headed, left leaning “independents”-- wouldn’t vote for Bush in a fit, ...

  • GOP BETTER GET ITS PR MACHINE MOVING

This could come down to public opinion, not law, which no longer rules the day in this country. The Dems already are screaming voter fraud. The GOP better scream back, and point out the actual fraud known to have taken place -- Wisconsin. And they better point out that Dems were trolling prisons for votes. If they are quiet in the face of the attacks, the legitimacy of the GOP will be brought into question.

Mothers In Glass Houses By No Left Turn So, now a million mothers –more like 50k, if that—think they know the sure-fire way of ridding our society of the mindless violence committed by and against the youth of America. Gun control, they yell. It’s not surprising the latest parade of dilettantes had a high percentage of the pious, Martha-Stewart emulators known as soccer moms. What is surprising is that the new form of mothering pioneered by these SUV captainettes somehow escapes the brush of blame when it comes to out of control teenagers. Alienation and dark moods have been a ...

Stock Options Fail to Catch On In Much of High-Tech Europe By KEVIN J. DELANEY and DAVID WESSEL Staff Reporters of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL PARIS -- The recipe for the U.S. high-tech boom sometimes seems quite simple: Take one cup of computer stuff, add stock options and stir. Much of Europe has no problem with the first ingredient: Envy and pursuit of technological prowess like America's is the norm on this side of the Atlantic. But there is a pronounced ambivalence about the gravy. Stock options and the wealth that accompanies success in the new economy are widely ...
  • Signs Of Consevatism On College Campuses

    10/07/1999 10:20:48 AM PDT · by No Left Turn · 194+ views
I troll college newspapers from time to time to get a feel for the political leanings of the generation coming up. The tone of most papers are decidely liberal, but I am noticing more and more conservative principles gaining acceptance, or at least a voice, at universities. The following article is an aggressive defense of the second amendment from a Rutgers student in the campus newspaper, the Daily Targum. Keep in mind Rutgers has always been considered a very liberal school. This is encouraging. Staring down the barrel of a gun Brendan Prawdzik The Deserted Village -------------------------------------------------------- The overwhelming support ...

COMMENTARY Voice of the people (letter) AMERICAN NAZIS Irving Louis Horowitz, Hannah Arendt Distinguished Professor of Sociology & Political Science, Rutgers University 08/17/1999 Chicago Tribune Page 12 (Copyright 1999 by the Chicago Tribune) The constant theme struck by President Clinton is the danger to Americans of guns. But this theme disguises a far more serious issue: the continuing existence of Nazi theory and practice in the form of the American Aryan Nations. Clinton washes out the ideological core of Nazism by speaking of the shooting of two Jewish women and three small Jewish children in a Los Angeles-area Jewish community ...

  • Poles Want Reagan Square

    National Review
Some 100 prominent Poles have formed a committee to rechristen one of Warsaw's central squares "Reagan Square." In this they show a splendid sense of history, and of gratitude. The committee's honorary chairman is Marian Krzaklewski, head of Solidarity, who says, "Reagan was the main author of the victory of the Free World over the Evil Empire." NR's old friend and contributor, Radek Sikorski, now Poland's deputy foreign minister, is chairman of the subcommittee. The square in question is currently called "Constitution Square," and the constitution it refers to is the bogus, Communist one of 1952. Reagan Square would join ...

GOP proposes slashing capital gains tax WASHINGTON (AP) - As investors continue pouring money into the stock market, House Republicans are proposing to slash the top capital gains tax rates from 20% to 15% as part of the GOP's mammoth tax relief bill. The announcement Wednesday by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Bill Archer, R-Texas, followed Tuesday's unveiling of a proposed new exemption for people who provide long-term care to elderly relatives at home. An estimated 84 million Americans now invest in stocks, up 170% since 1970, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. Archer said reducing capital gains ...

PERSPECTIVE Feminists feel strongly, think weakly Paul Mulshine 06/20/1999 The Star-Ledger Newark, N.J. FINAL Page 003 (Copyright Newark Morning Ledger Co., 1999) The esteemed Rutgers University anthropologist Lionel Tiger has done a lot of groundbreaking work in his field. It was he, for example, who first observed and named the phenomenon that has come to be known as "male bonding." But he was also involved in a groundbreaking event in another field, the TV talk show. Through no fault of his own, he sparked what may have been the first major on-camera riot. The phenomenon would later be perfected by ...
