Terri Schiavo: The Critical Issue

“Who should decide?” seems to be the critical issue in the Terri Schiavo case. Should it be her estranged husband? Her parents? State courts? State legislature? Federal courts? Congress? Should it be her own decision based on comments she may have made in the past? “Who should decide?” however, is not the critical issue. It is the decision itself that is the critical issue. It is the decision itself that should horrify us. Stripping away all the rhetoric and editorials, the decision is this: Should Terri Schiavo be killed because she has a disability? Some will bristle at this. They...

Prayer Request

Please pray for a young lady who is very ill. She has been ill off and on for a while now, and this morning was taken by helicopter to a bigger hospital in a nearby city. All I know is: anemia, pnuemonia, and now blood clot in shoulder. Her folks live down the street and are very kindly people, she played with my boys when they were all younger, her brother in law now works for us. She is such a sweet girl. Please pray that God will be with her, so that she doesn't have to be afraid, so...

Paige Sorry, Meant to Call NEA 'Extortionist Cabal'

(2004-02-24) -- U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige issued an apology today for joking that the nation's largest teachers' union is a "terrorist organization." "It was an inappropriate choice of words to describe the NEA as a 'terrorist organization'," said Mr. Paige. "I consulted a dictionary today and found several more appropriate terms to describe the highly-paid Washington lobbyists who masquerade as altruistic advocates for America's children. Therefore, I revise my previous remarks. The NEA is not a terrorist organization. The NEA is an extortionist, obstructionist, monopolistic cabal." Mr. Paige added that his remarks did not necessarily apply to America's...

What Kind of Society is Good for Families and Children?

What Kind of Society is Good for Business and Investing? Foster S. Friess -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following is adapted from a speech delivered on May 11, 2002, on the Hillsdale College campus, upon receiving Hillsdale College’s Adam Smith Award. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What Kind of Society is Good for Business and Investing? In thinking about what kind of society is good for business and investing, we need to remember two things. First, enlightened self-interest is a powerful and positive force for good in a free society. As Adam Smith said, “It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the...

VANITY: Help! Downloaded "search.com" Adware

My husband allowed a download of Adware, which turns out to be a program that takes over your computer and internet with popups and shorcut bars, etc. I am running into dead ends trying to find out how to get rid of this thing. Can anyone help?? search.exe, search.com are the referrences I can give you. My homepage now has a passthrough via search.com. I now have an extra toolbar on my desktop, and on my internet page. AND lots and lots of popups. It originally came with some extra folders in my favorites file (including adult sites). These seem...

Homeschooling on the Rise in Black Communities

LOS ANGELES — With a 4,000 percent increase in a 20-year span, homeschooling (search) has become one of the fast-growing phenomenons, especially inside the black community. In fact, black children are now five times more likely to be homeschooled than they were five years ago.

VANITY: Where to find video clips?

I wonder whether a Freepers soul mate might be able to find a clip from that amazing video footage of the toppling ot that big Saddam statue in Baghdad, showing an Iraqi man stannding on the pedestal beside the bronze legs of the tyrant, holding the Stars & Stripes out in both hands for the wind to unfurl, the same flag that moments before had fleetingly been draped over the face of the statue; and also the celebratory parade of Iraqis waving aloft our flag and the British Union Jack from their vehicles. Those images should be recovered for posterity,...

Lawyer Jokes...good Clinton one at the end

The Post Office just recalled their latest stamps. They had pictures of lawyers on them, and people couldn't figure out which side to spit on. How can a pregnant woman tell that she's carrying a future lawyer? She has an uncontrollable craving for baloney. How does an attorney sleep? First he lies on one side, and then he lies on the other. How many lawyer jokes are there? Only three. The rest are true stories. How many lawyers does it take to change a light bulb? How many can you afford? How many lawyers does it take to screw in...

Dufur Students Skunk OEA Examination Board

Maybellina Bastendagerdorfer of Rt. 2 Dufur is the Headmistress at the Dufur elementary school, and a Brigadier General in the local militia because she has the best mustache in town.. She was recently chastised by the Oregon Education Association for two reasons -- adding "armed to the teeth" after "indivisible" in the school's morning pledge of allegiance and producing graduates who didn’t know anything During the OEA special test given to the children, they didn’t know who Camille Paglia was, had never read Ms. Magazine and thought Jane Fonda was a commie dork. Following the exam, Miss Bastendagerdorfer, who is...

C S Lewis quote on Education

. . . The basic principal of the new education is to be that dunces and idlers must not be made to feel inferior to intelligent and industrious pupil. That would be “undemocratic”. . . .Children who are fit to proceed to a higher class may be artificially dept back, because the others would get a trauma . . .by being left behind. The bright pupil thus remains democratically fettered to his own age group throughout his school career, and a boy who would be capable of tackling Aeschylus or Dante sits listening to his coeval’s attempts to spell out...

I won't forget

Subject: I won't forget I know why and I won't forget while I sat in a movie theater watching "Schindler's List," and asked myself, "Why didn't the Jews fight back?" Now I know why. I sat in a movie theater, watching "Pearl Harbor" and asked myself, "Why weren't we prepared?" Now I know why. Civilized people cannot fathom, much less predict, the actions of evil people. On September 11, dozens of capable airplane passengers allowed themselves to be overpowered by a handful of poorly armed terrorists because they did not comprehend the depth of hatred that motivated their captors. On September ...
