Members of Afghanistan’s elite National Army Commando Corps are reportedly being contacted to join the Russian army in Ukraine. Afghan military and security sources say these US-trained light infantry forces could make a difference on the Ukrainian battlefield. The commandos were abandoned by the US and Western allies when Afghanistan fell to the Taliban last year.

The United States has accused Beijing of "provocative" and "irresponsible" actions after Taiwan said China rehearsed an attack on the island. Taiwan said it responded to the Chinese drills, now in their fourth day, by deploying aircraft and ships on Sunday. A Russian warship that was damaged by an explosion on Wednesday has sunk, Russia's defence ministry has said. Moskva, the flagship of Russia's Black Sea fleet, was being towed to port when "stormy seas" caused it to sink, according to a ministry message. The 510-crew vessel was a symbol of Russia's military power, and has led Russia's naval assault on Ukraine. Kyiv claims it struck the warship with its missiles, but Moscow has made no mention of an attack.

Russia has appointed a new commander to oversee the war in Ukraine as it shifts its strategy following an initial setback, the United States said. His stark warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin came in remarks from the White House and was another effort to clear up any confusion about the position of the U.S. and its NATO allies after Biden was heavily criticized Wednesday for saying a “minor incursion” by Russia would elicit a lesser response.

Mr Palihapitiya, a part-owner of San Francisco's basketball team, made the comments during a podcast discussion of whether President Joe Biden's action on the issue had helped him politically.
