Bigger and more real issue is the invention of cheap and readily accessible man made hard drugs. The increased rates of mental illness is more a symptom of rampant hard drug addiction rather than a cause. Illicit drug use has skyrocketed since the early 20th century and just keeps increasing every decade, thus so does the rate of mental illness. The real solution is eliminate hard drugs. Incarceration and mandatory rehab is necessary to protect the public from the drug addict.

It’s easy to hate on California, I’ve done it myself, but the truth is most of the state, by county, is conservative. Even a lot of Dems here are closet Conservatives, but don’t know it because they are low information. The issue here is the third world level of corruption and the fact that labor unions control our politics. Pretty much labor unions and corruption go hand in hand. The people here - the legal citizens that work and pay their rent or mortgages are fine and really no different than anywhere else. The invaders and looters among us give the rest of us a bad name... And Hollywood - they don’t help our image at all.

The real issue is that these workplaces have homogenous workers, e.g. workers of a certain language and ethnicity and they simply won’t hire outside that. I have personally witnessed this for decades, and not just in the blue collar fields. Same thing happens within departments in many corporate settings. Many (not all) managers only hire from “La raza solamente”.

If someone crosses our border illegally, they are a criminal. It doesn’t matter the reason, or what contributions they make once they get in, they are still criminals. They disrespected our laws, our processes, and they’re occupation in our territory is a continual slap in the face of all legal immigrants. They often work under the table avoiding paying income taxes, abuse our systems for their gain (using emergency rooms for basic health services), and frequently refuse to assimilate our language and national culture. They are leeches and a drain on our society. Send them back; I have no sympathy for them. For those who cross legally and work to become a law abiding citizen, I embrace them as my brothers and sisters. To those of you whom want to let the illegals in with impunity: Go to hell. I have no sympathy for you either.

General Intelligence AI is still many years away as current computer models and processing falls far too short to handle the sheer amount of computation needed for a binary system to become self aware and have creative (or destructive) thought. The current generation of AI is not intelligent: It's just relatively good at evaluating language input and giving coherent language based response by searching a massive database of similar responses to similar input. Current gen AI is just a bunch of really good chat bots.

LLMs, such as ChatGPT, have no creativity as has been noted by numerous technologists and researchers. Take DALL-E for example; ask it to product a picture, and every picture it produces are very similiar to each other to the point that humans can quickly tell they were AI generated. DALL-E is not really creating anything, it's just making facsimiles from a dataset based on the directions that a human is telling it what to make. Same with code generation on Chat-GPT. The code is taken from samples within its database (really the internet) right down to style. And it is most frequently broken code or code references that are not possible because it doesn't have a good grasp that not all programming languages have the same features or capabilities, but Chat-GPT often assumes the opposite. This requires the operator to constantly correct the AI and by changing the input to eventually get a reasonably correct output. This guidance requires technical knowledge and can be construed as a form of programming. Basically AI code review.

For companies that intend or already are utilizing AI to replace technical workers, I say "good luck". Their fate is going to be less stable or working code, more security vulnerabilities, less agile or innovative features, and more dissatisfied customers. Generative AI make terrible coders and even worse problem solvers. I really don't see humans being replaced by robot overlords anytime soon.
