Palm Beach County School District officials think they may have found a better path to students’ grades — through their stomachs. Officials said this week that through creative funding, beginning Monday morning the district will make sure all its roughly 175,000 students are offered a free breakfast, and in the process, a chance to perform better in class. The bold policy move is growing among larger school districts around the country as officials look to improve test scores. It essentially expands use of the federal free and reduced lunch program without taking substantially more money from the district. “I think...

The Democratic National Committee is raising a number of eyebrows after choosing to proceed with hosting Islamic “Jumah” prayers for two hours on the Friday of its convention, though it denied a Catholic cardinal’s request to say a prayer at the same event. Watch the promotional video, via the Bureau of Muslim Affairs, which is partnering with the DNC for the event. The first two minutes are rather dry, but around 2:04 a muezzin sings the call to prayer with an American flag background, and the video “picks up” considerably:

Republicans have postponed their national convention in Tampa at least a day because of concerns about Tropical Storm Isaac. The event will kick off Monday morning but the convention will immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement. “Due to the severe weather reports for the Tampa Bay area, the Republican National Convention will convene on Monday August 27th and immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, August 28th. After consulting with Governor Scott, NOAA and local emergency management officials, we are optimistic that we will begin an exciting, robust convention that will nominate the...

Now that President Obama's health care overhaul has won the last stamp of approval from the U.S. Supreme court, the question you're probably asking is, Who's going to pay for it? The Affordable Care Act will extend health care coverage to some 30 million uninsured consumers along with an expansion of Medicaid services. It also promises a slew of tax credits for small business and middle-income families to help offset the costs of mandatory coverage.

In late February, 28-year-old George Zimmerman called 911 to report that a “real suspicious guy” was walking down the street in Sanford, Fla. He decided to follow the “suspicious guy,” and later that night Mr. Zimmerman shot and killed him with a 9 mm handgun. The “suspicious guy” was a black 17-year-old named Trayvon Martin. He was unarmed, carrying only a bag of Skittles and a can of iced tea.

Extremely rare permit granted by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service A pair of Wyoming bald eagles now qualify as a really endangered species. The Northern Arapaho Tribe secured an extraordinarily rare permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service allowing the Native Americans to kill two of the national birds for religious use. The national agency, in a 2009 report, said it has never issued a license for the killing of a bald eagle — making it likely that the tribe was the first group to ever get the legal go-ahead. The highly unusual decision came three years after the...

Pat Santeramo, long-time president of the Broward Teachers Union, is under investigation amid accusations he blew through $3.8 million in union reserves, used dues to reimburse people for campaign donations and has been overpaid for most of his tenure. Santeramo, 64, said through his lawyer Monday he had no plans to resign, despite a criminal investigation by the Broward State Attorney's Office and a separate inquiry by the Florida Elections Commission.

The animal advocacy group Mercy for Animals sent an undercover investigator to E6 Cattle Company in Texas, where he filmed calf abuse over a two-week period. To prevent such whistleblowing, several states have passed so-called “Ag-gag” laws that would make it illegal to clandestinely film inside slaughterhouses, sparking what animal rights activists fear will be a nationwide trend.

Five South Dakota lawmakers have introduced legislation that would require any adult 21 or older to buy a firearm “sufficient to provide for their ordinary self-defense.” The bill, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2012, would give people six months to acquire a firearm after turning 21. The provision does not apply to people who are barred from owning a firearm. Nor does the measure specify what type of firearm. Instead, residents would pick one “suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and preference.”

Police are investigating the slaughter of 100 husky dogs used during the 2010 Winter Olympics to pull tourist sleds in the Canadian ski resort of Whistler, authorities said Monday. The grisly killings were reportedly carried out by one worker over two days in April 2010 with a shotgun and a knife, with reports of injured dogs crawling out of a mass grave. Local media said the dogs were killed because business slumped in the two months following the Games and they were no longer needed by tourism companies Outdoor Adventures and Howling Dogs, which sell dog-sled rides to tourists.

TALLAHASSEE — Hoping to fend off a rash of overdoses in Florida during the upcoming spring break, Attorney General Pam Bondi has outlawed a synthetic drug cocktail masquerading as "bath salts" that apparently gives users super-human strength and has similar effects to LSD, heroin and cocaine. Bondi issued an emergency order Wednesday banning the drug -- Methylenedioxypyrovalerone or MDPV -- after Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen brought the dangerous concoction to her attention Friday. "I frankly had a nightmare last night that someone was going to overdose on this and we hadn't done anything," she said. Unlike real bath salts,...
