  • Blaise Pascal on "MAHOMET"

595—Mahomet was without authority. His reasons, then, should have been very strong, having only their own force. What does he say, then, that we must believe him? 596—The Psalms are chanted throughout the whole world. Who renders testimony to Mahomet? Himself. Jesus Christ desires His own testimony to be as nothing. The quality of witnesses necessitates their existence always and everywhere; and he, miserable creature, is alone. 597—Against Mahomet.--The Koran is not more of Mahomet than the Gospel is of Saint Matthew, for it is cited by many authors from age to age. Even its very enemies, Celsus and Porphyry,...

Love bade me welcome: yet my soul drew back, Guilty of dust and sin. But quick-eyed Love, observing me grow slack From my first entrance in, Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning If I lacked anything. “A guest," I answered, “worthy to be here”: Love said, “You shall be he.” “I, the unkind, ungrateful? Ah, my dear, I cannot look on thee.” Love took my hand, and smiling did reply, “Who made the eyes but I?” “Truth, Lord; but I have marred them; let my shame Go where it doth deserve.” “And know you not," says Love, “who bore the...
  • 'Strong enough to be self-critical': In America and the church

    CNN.com ^ | Fri March 13, 2015 | Rachel Held Evans,
(CNN)You would have to be made of stone to not be moved by President Obama's address on the 50th anniversary of the march on Selma last Saturday. His tribute to the "plain and humble people...coming together to shape their country's course" was poetic and principled, timely and true -- a fitting way to honor those who marched in support of voting rights in 1965. But perhaps the most striking lines from this historic speech concerned the inherent patriotism of righteous protest: "What greater expression of faith in the American experiment than this, what greater form of patriotism is there than...
  • Giving up Hell for a Year: How it could revolutionize our relationships

Hell is real, in some form or another.Hell on earth is something every human being agrees exists. War tears families apart. Disease kills parents and leaves behind orphans. Famine neglects to feed the most vulnerable. Consumerism by the privileged fuels the ramifications of all of these things. Hell on earth–this is real.Hell as a literal place of eternal conscious torment for those who never make a mental assent to the Four Spiritual Laws (1. God loves humans, 2. Humans are sinners, 3. Only Jesus saves sinners, 4. Accept Jesus to live eternally) is another perspective. People with this view, which...
  • “I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old”

So begins the Maskil of Asaph, Psalm 78. As synods and councils and elderships wrangle over things long ago settled by God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, I wanted to encourage fellow believers to find an audio bible they like and "baptize" their minds in the complex and glorious beauty of His Psalms. I have been richly blessed by doing so while working and riding my bike. Music? Let me tell you, the Psalms are REAL music to a believer's ears. Though steeped in the era of Law, God's manifold wisdom and loving kindness are absolutely "fresh and...
  • Cool Things To Buy Instead of a G5

"The Power Mac G5 is the world's fastest personal computer and...models start at just $1999."But who wants the base model? Of course we want the dual processor model starting at $2999, don't we? Don't overlook the small fact that this doesn't include a monitor (could you settle for a 17" Studio Display @ $699? It used to be $999...think of the savings.)I could go on, but $3698--still missing peripherals and any Adobe software, etc.--is a good place to stop and ask: "What cool thing could you buy instead of a new G5 and still have a few thou left over?"My...

I miss the old LP. CD sound is excellent, but the album cover art magic is lost. One of my Top Ten albums—Propaganda's "A Secret Wish"—is also one of my top album art and liner note picks. Lots of quips and quotes and cool British design. What are your favorites?

In response to a recent post "Why US Manufacturing Won't Die", I thought it would be interesting if FReepers would name some products and companies strictly U.S.-based, yet desired the world over.To wit:Rickenbacker is made in the U.S. and proud of it! Not a cheap instrument, but you have to see it to appreciate the quality. (I used to own one but sold it.)Chris Squire/Paul McCartney/Geddy Lee are a few of the non-Americans who have used this instrument.
