Taking a harder line on illegal immigrants, Morristown is seeking to have its police officers deputized as federal immigration officers, making the community one of the first in the nation to undertake such an effort. If accepted into a program run by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, Morristown officers would gain the ability to check suspects' immigration status, charge them with civil immi gration violations and order them to appear in federal immigration court. Renters earning less than $50,000 will share in the same property tax relief package homeowners are expected to get in the next year, Gov. Jon Corzine said yesterday. Corzine, speaking at an anti-poverty forum, also said he would support expanding the state rental assistance program and consider limiting how often affluent communities may sell off their legal obligations to build affordable housing in cities strapped for cash. Without rental subsidies and more housing opportunities in suburbs closer to jobs, thousands of people will continue to struggle, he said.

BELVIDERE | The former pastor accused of stealing more than $600,000 from charity denied wrongdoing after his initial court appearance Thursday and said the accusations tell just one side. Authorities allege the Rev. Robert Ascolese spent some of the stolen money on himself and some went back to St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Washington. Ascolese appeared in handcuffs before Superior Court Judge John Pursel as his attorney entered a not guilty plea to a long list of theft and records-tampering charges.
