CHICAGO -- The Chicago Blackhawks will not wear Pride-themed warmup jerseys before Sunday's Pride Night game against the visiting Vancouver Canucks because of security concerns involving a Russian law that expands restrictions on activities seen as promoting LGBTQIA+ rights in the country. The decision was made by the NHL organization following discussions with security officials within and outside the franchise, according to a person familiar with the situation who spoke to the AP on Wednesday on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the move.

A video which has been claimed to show a condemned man being hanged from a helicopter seized by the Taliban appears to have been misleadingly captioned. The 11-second clip - which has over 2m views and has been shared thousands of times on Twitter - is blurred and doesn’t give a clear indication of what is going on. Further footage and still photographs seen by the BBC show that the man flying over the city of Kandahar is very much alive. These images show him wearing the Blackhawk helicopter’s diver’s winch and waving the Taliban flag. Several Afghanistan experts, quoting...

Matt Dumba of the Minnesota Wild became the first player to kneel for the U.S. national anthem in the National Hockey League (NHL) on Saturday night before the Chicago Blackhawks faced the Edmonton Oilers in Alberta, Canada. Dumba, who is Canadian, was invited onto the ice for a special ceremony, walking down a red carpet and delivering a speech about racial justice. He knelt for “The Star-Spangled Banner,” but stood for “O, Canada,” the Canadian anthem. The scoreboard flashed a slogan with a hashtag: “We Skate for Black Lives.” “During this pandemic, something unexpected, but long overdue, occurred,” Dumba said,...

In what might be the greatest example of the current state of the Chicago Blackhawks, the team's mascot got into a legitimate fight with a fan at United Center this weekend. Chicago police say that a fan attacked Tommy Hawk, punching the mascot in the face and trying to put the giant bird into a headlock following Chicago's overtime loss to the Jets on Friday.. According to the Chicago Sun Times, the alleged attacker was as a white man between 18 and 20, about 5-foot-5 and 160 pounds. The man inside the Tommy Hawk costume wasn't having any of the...

The Blackhawks fired coach Joel Quenneville on Tuesday and named Jeremy Colliton to replace him, making him the 38th coach in franchise history. The Hawks also fired assistant coaches Kevin Dineen and Ulf Samuelsson and named Barry Smith an assistant on Colliton’s staff. The rest of the coaching staff will remain with the team. The Hawks failed to make the playoffs last season for the first time during Quenneville’s tenure. They are 6-6-3 this season and have lost five straight. The Hawks haven’t won a playoff series since winning the Stanley Cup in 2015, their third championship in six years....

In a bizarre turn of events, the Blackhawks had to play emergency goaltender Scott Foster Thursday night against the Jets, and Foster saved all seven shots he faced in a 6-2 win. Not bad for a 36-year-old guy who had not played competitive hockey since his four-year career at Western Michigan University ended in 2006. Of course, no one expected Foster would even sniff the ice, let alone turn away all the shots he faced. But starting goalie Anton Forsberg suffered an injury in pre-game warmups. Backup Collin Delia, who had just been recalled from the minor leagues, made his...

NEW YORK -- Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw has been suspended for one game for making a homophobic slur during Game 4 of the team's first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series with the St. Louis Blues in Chicago on Tuesday, April 19, the National Hockey League announced today. Shaw has also been fined $5,000 for directing an inappropriate gesture at the on-ice officials during the same game. Shaw will also be required to undergo sensitivity training. Both incidents took place at 17:56 of the third period. Shaw will miss Game 5 of the series on Thursday, April 21, in St. Louis....

Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane will not face criminal charges after a woman claimed she was raped by the NHL player at his home near Buffalo in early August. Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III released the findings Thursday morning: The Town of Hamburg Police Department and the Office of the Erie County District Attorney have conducted an exhaustive investigation over the course of the past three months regarding allegations made by a 21 year-old woman that 26 year-old Patrick Kane raped her on his bed. The investigative findings include the following:

CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks are one win away from winning another Stanley Cup championship. But one of the team’s ambassadors can’t enjoy it, because he doesn’t know its happening. Hall of Famer Stan Mikita spent his entire 22-year NHL career in Chicago. He’s now 75 and suffers from a brain disorder called Lewy body. The disorder can lead to dementia, hallucinations, and memory loss. Mikita’s wife, Jill, tells the Chicago Tribune, “His mind is completely gone. I don’t like to use that term, but there’s no other way to describe it.” “He doesn’t know he’s missing out. He has...

U.S. Special Operations Forces had to fight “hand to hand” in Friday night’s raid that killed the Islamic State terrorist group senior commander Abu Sayyaf, several defense officials told The Daily Beast Saturday. Troops from the U.S. Army Delta Force landed near a multi-story building with Ospreys and Blackhawks and were met with resistance when they entered, including “hand to hand” combat, one official told The Daily Beast. There was some resistance from armed guards and from the terrorist commander himself, but the troops were well prepared to handle that, another official said.

The Chicago Blackhawks will no longer play "The Stripper" during their Shoot the Puck contest after hearing from fans who found the song demeaning to women, a team spokesperson said Wednesday. Blackhawks fans recently have been voicing their opinions about the song and a few other Blackhawks practices they deem sexist. The push for change picked up after Marissa Miller, 31, of Chicago, started gathering online signatures Aug. 6 for a petition for the Blackhawks to treat their female fans the same as their male ones.

The Chicago Blackhawks declined to comment about the Washington Redskins’ loss of trademark protection Wednesday, but an expert said there’s little reason to believe the hockey team’s name and Indian head logo could face similar jeopardy. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office found in a 2-to-1 decision that trademarks covering the Redskins’ name and associated symbols disparaged American Indians, and thus must be canceled under federal law. The team vowed to appeal, noting it had won a similar legal case a decade ago.
