In a tragic irony, the prospect of another 'life-saving' lockdown has drained some senior citizens of their will to live. Assisted suicides and depression are up.An elderly woman who had experienced strict confinement and isolation in a Toronto nursing home under a previous COVID lockdown has narrowly avoided reliving that experience, although at a horrible cost. Toronto went into Ontario’s most restrictive “grey” tier on Monday, including a near-complete ban on social gatherings. Unlike many others in North America who have packed up their belongings and relocated to less restrictive areas during the COVID-19 outbreak, however, her “escape” from lockdown...

The “Midnight” that Archbishop Sheen foretold many years ago, is now full upon us; the forces of death rule the world, using any and all means possible to crush opposition. “It is necessary that the good, the children of light, come together and make their voices heard…..Before the power of prayer, the deceptions of the children of darkness will collapse, their plots will be revealed, their betrayal will be shown, their frightening power will end in nothing, brought to light and exposed for what it is: an infernal deception.” (Archbishop Carlos Maria Vigano)

The Netherlands’ highest court ruled Tuesday that doctors can carry out euthanasia in patients with advanced dementia if the patient has earlier made a written directive. The Supreme Court ruling solidifies in law a practice that already was being carried out on rare occasions in the Netherlands. Dutch euthanasia advocacy group NVVE welcomed the ruling, saying in a statement that the decision should help doctors “to feel strengthened and supported if they want to carry out euthanasia on a patient with dementia.” The case before the Supreme Court revolved around a district court’s acquittal last year of a doctor who...

“I want to end it if the pain gets unbearable,” 63-year-old Melanie S. tells Lukas Radbruch, a doctor at University Hospital Bonn, who has also been serving as the president of the German Association for Palliative Medicine since 2014. She has end-stage lung cancer, and fears she could suddenly lose the ability to swallow and this suffocate while fully conscious. This possibility has led Melanie S. to consider assisted suicide. But so far, paragraph 217 of Germany’s criminal code prohibits assisted suicide. The law was adopted in 2015 by Germany’s parliament, the Bundestag, to prevent associations or individuals from turning...

There's something about being in the bleak midwinter and having to think about suicide that seems especially unbearable. But just as many of us were in Washington protesting the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion, activists were in New York's state capitol intensifying their efforts to legalize doctor-assisted suicide in the Empire State. It's the last thing anyone needs. At a recent gathering in Albany where doctors, medical professionals and others gathered to protest legal suicide, Dr. Mary-Ellen Edmiston, a palliative-care specialist from Syracuse, said: "No patient should have to spend their final days in pain...

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said this week that he would sign a law allowing physician-assisted suicide in his state. A pro-abortion Democrat who claims to be Catholic, Cuomo drew national outrage earlier this year when he signed a law allowing unborn babies to be aborted for basically any reason up to birth. The law drew massive outrage for stripping away basically all protections for unborn babies and some for women, too. Though the Catholic Church opposes assisted suicide and abortion, Cuomo apparently supports them both. In an interview Tuesday with WAMC, he said he would sign a law allowing...

DENVER — After watching his mother die slowly when he stopped her medication, Neil Mahoney knew he wanted the option of ending his own life peacefully when a doctor told him in July that he had months to live after being diagnosed with cancer. A physician was willing to help him do that under Colorado’s medically assisted suicide law, but she was fired by Centura Health, a health system affiliated with the Catholic and Adventist churches, for violating its guidelines on the issue. The action launched a legal fight over whether the law violates the organization’s freedom of religion and...

The well-known platitude "but for the grace of God go I" played in my brain while reading the tragic story of a disabled Canadian father who chose to end his own life, leaving behind an 11-year-old son. It would be easy to judge Sean Tagert, who was diagnosed with ALS six years ago. Do I believe he made the wrong choice? Sure. But I wasn't the one who was struggling to pay for my health care after losing my ability to breath on my own or feed myself. I'm not the one living under Canada's health care system that was more than happy to pay for my suicide but not the care I needed. So, yes, I disagree with Tagert's "choice" and mourn the loss of his life, but I blame Canada and their "touted" socialized medicine.

The Portland Herald Press reports that pro-life activists are mobilizing in an effort to collect 63,067 valid signatures of Maine in order to prevent two controversial laws which legalize doctor-assisted suicide as well as require private insurers and taxpayer-funded Medicaid to pay for abortions from taking effect in September. Carroll Conley, executive director of the Christian Civic League of Maine, told the paper that for the past two weeks the group has been working with Catholic and evangelical leaders around the state in order to obtain the signatures before and after masses and services. According to the paper, "the Christian...

Gov. Phil Murphy on Friday signed legislation making New Jersey the seventh state to enact a law permitting terminally ill patients to end their lives. Murphy, a Democrat, signed the Medical Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act in private. His office would not answer why the signing was not public. The law goes into effect in August. He earlier indicated he would support the bill, but in a personal statement, Murphy — a lifelong Catholic — revealed that he wrestled with whether to sign the legislation. The state’s Catholic Conference testified against the measure. “I have concluded that,...

Let’s not be confused by double speak. The bill (HB 5898) that the Connecticut legislature is poised to consider has nothing to do with “aid in dying.” Aid in dying is palliative care to improve the quality of a person’s remaining life. The World Health Organization views such care as a human right. The bill would not expand desperately needed access to palliative care or expand patient autonomy – patients already have the right to refuse any type of treatment. Instead, the bill concerns the authority of doctors. It sets forth the circumstances under which a doctor could actively prescribe...

PBS Unmasks Darwinian Eugenics Dr Jerry Bergman reviews the new PBS documentary on one of the evils of Darwinism, The Eugenics Crusade. Finally, One of the Evils of Darwinism Has Gone Mainstream by Dr Jerry Bergman 2-24-19 A new PBS documentary, The Eugenics Crusade, begins with Darwin, who inspired his cousin, Francis Galton, who spent his life developing Darwinian eugenics with the hope that it would be used to make both better people and a better society. To do this, Francis Galton was inspired by the “work of his half cousin Charles Darwin [who] believed that evolution was this natural...

A recent article in the New Yorker extolling the (probable) next Governor of California reveals that Gavin Newsom helped his mother commit assisted suicide.

Yesterday afternoon, the California Senate passed SB 282 which legalizes aiding, advising, or encouraging assisted suicide. The bill was rushed through on the first day the legislature returned from its summer recess, giving no opportunity for debate or even opposing remarks. The bill was introduced in the wake of Life Legal’s challenge to California’s assisted suicide law. We registered our opposition to the bill early on, as it grants complete legal immunity to anyone who wants to facilitate the death of someone who is defined as “terminally ill” under California’s assisted suicide law. The law defines “terminal” as a condition...

WASHINGTON — Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase & Co. will create an independent health care company that is “free from profit-making incentives” that will aim to reduce healthcare costs for their U.S. workers. The focus of the company will be technology solutions “that will provide U.S. employees and their families with simplified high-quality and transparent healthcare at a reasonable cost,” a news release says. “The ballooning costs of healthcare act as a hungry tapeworm on the American economy. Our group does not come to this problem with answers. But we also do not accept it as inevitable. Rather, we...

Assisted suicide is the ultimate slippery slope. Time and time again, proponents use heart-wrenching stories of people suffering through pain and anguish as they endure incurable or terminal illnesses, and use these as examples of why we need, as they call it, “death with dignity.” But leaving aside the awful notion of suicide being more dignified than dying a natural death, this never remains the line when it comes to assisted suicide. The parameters get changed and stretched, and the line gets moved further and further. Now, healthy people are being euthanized… solely because of mental illness. In the Netherlands,...

Doctors and pharmacies in the nation’s capital are now allowed to prescribe life-ending medications to terminally ill patients. The Death with Dignity Act of 2016 became law with the signature of Mayor Muriel Bowser in December of 2016. Now the Bowser administration has announced the implementation of the law in the District. The city said the law allows terminally ill D.C. residents over the age of 18 to legally obtain a physician’s prescription for medications to end their lives in a humane and peaceful manner.

A total of 111 people in California took their own lives using lethal prescriptions during the first six months of a law that allows terminally ill people to request life-ending drugs from their doctors, according to data released Tuesday. A snapshot of the patients who took advantage of the law mirrors what’s been seen in Oregon, which was the first state to legalize the practice nearly two decades ago. Though California is far more diverse than Oregon, the majority of those who have died under aid-in-dying laws in both states were white, college-educated cancer patients older than 60. The End...

Exit, the Switzerland-based organization that helps those with incurable illnesses to end their lives, has commissioned a working group to look into the possibility of extending its remit to help elderly people who are still in good health but want to die. At the moment, Exit offers its services to those who have a terminal illness, a debilitating disease that brings intolerable suffering, or multiple age-related debilitating disabilities. On Saturday Saskia Frei, president of the German-speaking arm of the organization, announced it would fund a working group to look into extending Exit’s services to healthy elderly people who wish to...

A newly released video reveals that health insurance companies, seeking to keep their costs down, now can include assisted suicide as a viable option for the terminally ill when these patients live in a state that has legalized assisted suicide. On Wednesday, patient advocacy group Patients’ Rights Action Fund (PRAF) is releasing the video in which a physician discusses he is now encountering insurance companies that refuse to reimburse life-saving treatments for terminally ill patients – who live in states in which assisted suicide has become legal – because they can now recommend less expensive lethal drugs for ending the...
