Before he headed to Michigan to stump for gubernatorial candidate Dick Posthumus and State Sen. Thaddeus McCotter ( the GOP nominee for a new congressional seat), President Bush spoke to reporters about the beltway sniper and the terrorist attack in Bali, Indonesia. Bush said he believed the bombing in Bali was Al Qaeda, and urged the world to continue to fight against these aggressors. President Bush and First Lady Laura stayed in the nation's capital this weekend so Laura could finish up her National Book Festival yesterday. This morning, the first couple attended church services, and when asked by reporters to comment on the bombing in Indonesia, Bush called the act cowardly and urged the world leaders to once again unite in the global war against terrorism. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle shocked many today as he crossed party lines that he had drawn a few weeks ago, and decided to back the President's plan. President Bush hosted a White House Event for Hispanic Heritage Month today, honoring the many Hispanic Americans who have contributed to the success of the country. President Bush headed to Knoxville, Tennessee to speak to workers at Alcoa regarding the war on terror, and once again called on Congress to pass the Homeland Security and terrorism insurance bills. Before heading to Alcoa, Bush spoke in favor of Republican gubernatorial candidate Van Hilleary at the Cherokee Aviation Hanger. Bush also asked Attorney General Ashcroft to seek an injunction under the Taft-Hartley Act, ending the lockout and requiring work at the ports to resume at a normal pace. Bush spent the majority of the day preparing for the speech, which was broadcast to the nation from Cincinnati, Ohio.
