Back in the mid 1990s, the Internet was still a very new thing and not everybody even used a web browser. There were still many using Archie, Gopher, FTP, Telnet, Usenet, etc., and that was only the geeks. Most people had no clue about the online world and if they did, they were using mainstream services like Prodigy (owned by Sears!), CompuServe, and America Online to get that interactive "online" experience (at several dollars an hour on a phone line). The first browser was called Mosaic and it eventually morphed into Netscape Navigator, both of which are mostly forgotten today....

No sooner do I select the most funnest Tweet of the day than Cher steps up with this howler: -snip- She’s so indignant that she can’t even bother to identify the correct Kirsten, because I guess all blonde Kirstens look alike to her. Gives me an excuse to tell a celebrity story, from almost 30 years ago. For some reason I can’t now recall, I got to have a one-on-one lunch with Sonny Bono, then just finishing up as the well regarded mayor of Palm Springs, and thinking then about challenging Gray Davis for State Controller in 1990 I think....

Explanation: What’s that new spot of light in Cassiopeia? A nova. Although novas occur frequently throughout the universe, this nova, known as Nova Cas 2021 or V1405 Cas, became so unusually bright in the skies of Earth last month that it was visible to the unaided eye. Nova Cas 2021 first brightened in mid-March but then, unexpectedly, became even brighter in mid-May and remained quite bright for about a week. The nova then faded back to early-May levels, but now is slightly brightening again and remains visible through binoculars. Identified by the arrow, the nova occurred toward the constellation of...

Why Atlanta's richest neighborhood wants to secede from the city Atlanta (CNN)In Atlanta's well-to-do community of Buckhead, the debate over becoming an independent city has been brewing off and on for decades. Now, amid a spike in crime, calls to split from the capital have grown louder than ever. "We filed for divorce and our divorce is final," said Bill White, chairman and CEO of the Buckhead City Committee, which is spearheading the efforts for the formation of the city. "We're forming our own city, we're establishing our own police force and we will eradicate crime." The city of Atlanta...

The Georgia Board of Education is the first state board to adopt a resolution to ban both the teaching of tenets of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and “action” or “protest” civics in the state’s public schools. CRT is a Marxist philosophy that embraces the concept that all social and cultural issues should be viewed through the lens of race. “Action” or “protest” civics is an initiative that seeks to indoctrinate K-12 students into woke “action” political organizing, under the guise of restoring “unity.” Texas recently passed the first measure in the country to prohibit both CRT and “action” or “protest”...

It is “time to distinguish” between the freedoms afforded to those who have been vaccinated against the Chinese coronavirus and those who haven’t, said former British prime minister Tony Blair. A report from the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change argues for the adoption of a global vaccine passport that would afford people more freedom if they have received a vaccine for the Chinese coronavirus. “The health pass needs to be usable both by national border authorities and other organisations within countries. It should also include the ability to demonstrate time-restricted testing status for those who aren’t able to be...

There are those who propose the possibility that “the lie” or “strong delusion” that will come upon people, who find themselves left behind after the Rapture of the Church, could be that they will be told, and believe totally, that we who were Raptured were taken by aliens in UFOs to another planet. And it may very well be true that this is the strong delusion. However, it recently occurred to me that there is another possibility. While reading an article about some of the ingredients in what some refer to as ‘the jab,’ it seems the cocktail includes something...

What exactly are the qualifications to host a show on CNN? The most obvious seems to be an astonishing lack of professional shame — and I’m not even talking about the circus act Chris Cuomo’s been doing for the past year. Reliable Sources is the most ironically named show in all of cable news, given that the guest roster regularly includes Dan Rather. On this Sunday’s episode, host Brian Stelter partook in a highly embarrassing act of professional self-debasement, in a segment in which he offered schoolgirl giggles and petty star-gazing over White House press secretary Jen Psaki. Stelter acted...

Leaders of United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) will vote in September on a declaration to call for an end of US aid to Israel. The resolution will also ask its members to vote in favor of “the international campaign for boycotts, divestment, and sanctions against apartheid in Israel.” UTLA President Cecily Myart-Cruz sent a motion form to members that stated: I move that UTLA denounce the recent bombings in The West Bank and Gaza by the Israeli resulting in the deaths of hundreds of civilian people, mostly women and children. Palestinians have the right to self-determination free of violence and...

(...) Mr. Humphreys tells us that the Trudeau government has put a 20-year seal on the deliberations that led to Canada’s “mandatory hotel rules.” (...) The rules are known. However, to hear of the thinking that went behind them, to have citations from the cluster of high-powered brains around the cabinet table that gave them birth — this is a threat to Canada’s national security for the next 20 years. Joy Behar told her co-hosts Monday on ABC’s “The View” that former President Donald Trump looked like he “pooped” his pants during a speech to the North Carolina Republican Party on Saturday. Co-host Meghan McCain said, “Ex-presidents have to present themselves in a way they’ll be taken seriously. Otherwise, you can look like a crazy, ex-mad-king. He’s been like a wedding singer at Mar-a-Lago, and he just looks really disheveled. And he doesn’t look good. I mean, I’m not one of these people who, like, a Jim Acosta where I’m always dunking on him, but this is not how —...
