  • Novak: California's runaway recall

I hope Republicans won't make the same mistake as they did the last time,-- which is the reason we need to have this recally effort,-- by nominating Simon, a wonderful Republican, but clearly not one who could beat Davis in liberal California.

If Simon had any trace of a spine, he could've whupped Davis. Davis' pained attempts to tie Simon to Enron went unanswered. Even though Davis received the single-largest contribution from Enron of any politician ($200K), Simon didn't feel the need for any sort of counter-offensive.

Instead, Simon played nice and kept quiet, then finally made a pathetic 11th Hour TV spot with his wife where he practically apologized for everything Davis accused him of and assured California voters that he really wasn't a bad guy after all.

And let's not forget the infamous bogus fund-raising photo, the Davis campaign's October Surprise that Simon's camp fell for hook, line and sinker.

Despite the fact that Simon ran one of the weakest campaigns in recent memory and made every mistake he possibly could have, he still took 43 of 57 counties (or something like that) in the state.

To suggest that the Democrats who have run this state into the dirt can't be beaten by anyone but a RINO is absurd. We don't need Riordan. We just need a real conservative with some balls.

I grew up in the 1970's when women that I personally knew in High School dies from back alley abortions.

One of the founders of NARAL gave an interview months ago stating that his statisticians were never able to find more than 200 botched back-alley abortions in a given year. Underwhelmed by their actual findings, the abortion industry inflated that number to 50,000 (per year!) and sold it to the American public without a shred of evidence.

The majority of these illegal abortions occurred in the 60's. By the 70's, abortion was already legal in a number of states. Roe v Wade came along in '73, making abortion legal everywhere by prohibiting states from criminalizing it.

So how many people, exactly, did you know who died from illegal abortions in the 70's? And why were they more willing to untrust unlicenced, black-market "doctors" with a risky, complicated surgical procedure rather than just crossing state lines and having it done legally?

The power of human rationalization cannot be overestimated.

Evidence of that fact has been piling up lately.

Will never happen. Dumb premise. Tom Cruise would ruin a Mann movie. Russel Crowe is as high as it goes.

Apparently, it's pretty close to happening. If Mann and Cruise decide they want to work with each other, nobody's going to stand in the way, no matter how weak the log line sounds at first blush.

I'm happy to see Mann's persuing a crime film, that's where he belongs. That's the world he knew in Chicago, that's who he's surrounded himself with in life (cops and thieves), that's just what he does best.

I'm really hoping he wrote the script.

I spoke too soon. Mann is reportedly close to getting Tom Cruise and Adam Sandler to star in a film called Collateral, which he will direct. The movie's about a contract killer (Cruise) who hijacks a taxi (driven by Sandler) to take him to his target.

    Just read this tonight.

Who can start a Michael Mann Ping List!

Michael's not in the news very much, and he doesn't have anything lined up to direct right now. He might have gotten dispondent after the failure of Ali (gorgeous, awful movie), followed by Robbery Homicide Division's quick hook. I was hoping he'd shop RHD to HBO, try to re-cast it after Sizemore's arrest... but I haven't heard anything.

Mann's a producer on Scorsese's Howard Hughes film (The Aviator, starring Leo DiCaprio), but that's about all he's working on right now.

This was not a SIMPLE Jane Russell thread. The thread was about the effects of abortion later on in life. Wow.

The thread was about you. And enough with incredulous reactions already.

That is my point. The more you talk, WarSlut, the more you illustrate it.

Then I'd better stop talking, huh?

This isn't any technique. This is emotion. If you want debate without emotion, anger, passion and intensity, try PBS. This is an abortion thread. To many, myself included, this is the single most important issue facing the human race today. Wardaddy was right. This one's the big Kahuna.

It's certainly the single most important issue to the Democrats.

For the record, I've lost about ten people in my life to abortion -- that is, people I've never had the pleasure of meeting. I know a lot of people who've had abortions. I've never pointed a finger in anyone's chest. I've never lectured or preached at anyone. I never even raised my voice at any of them.

And I wasn't able to stop a single one of them.

When you figure out a good way to get people to not have abortions, let me know, because I haven't. Until then, the debate goes on (and it will get ugly).

Considering you managed to turn a simple Jane Russell thread -- destined for no more than 30-40 posts -- into a 400+-post opus dedicated to your guilt-free abortion, I'd say you brought this on yourself. You and your friend here can paint it any way you like. The link's just a quick scroll up the page, they can see you in all you nihlistic, crass glory all for themselves. I didn't get involved until the end, when it became too much to bear (I've been in abortion threads all weekends, it's been on my mind, obviously).

If you're referring to the Phil Jackson crack, sorry. You're the first person I'd ever seen on Free Republic boasting of a sexual conquest, and that just stuck with me since I read it. And being a basketball fan in (not of) Los Angeles, I'm obviously not going to forget the name.

Really, I'd rather I didn't know a thing about you. Unfortunately, you've made that impossible.

    Just what we need.

No. I am strongly opposed to the roadmap plan. I am strongly opposed to the creation of another "Palestine" and a PLO state. I am strongly opposed to dealing with terrorists, as this roadmap does.

Fundamentally, you're absolutely right. But the Bush Roadmap surely takes into account the fact that these bloodythirsty thugs are incapable of peace.

Really, it's a Last Chance Before We Unleash Hell on Your Sorry Behinds Plan... but for the sake of the history books, they can't really call it that.

Sorry, wardaddy - I should have been more clear - I meant that I watched a female FReeper verbally beaten up on another thread where the topic was abortion. She got the full Reginald Denney treatment, imo, and she got it from pro-lifers. It was ugly.

Of course, you're referring to Hildy on the Jane Russell thread. What you're ommitting is that fact that Hildy was snide, beligerent, nasty, callous and insulting from the get-go. Basically, she got what she gave, then cried foul and started calling in the moderators.

Also, you fogot to mention that most of Hildy's insults were directed at perfectly nice folks who merely promised to pray for her (sweet girl).

As far as I know, Reginald Denny wasn't cruising Florence & Normandy waving a confederate flag, flipping off black folk. That's more along the lines of what Hildy was doing. She wasn't attacked for admitting to an abortion (many others did that, none were attacked). She was attacked for being a self-absorbed, sociopathic jerk.
