Judge Orders Ethics Training For Michael Flynn’s Former Lawyers

In yet another surprise development in the Michael Flynn case, on Tuesday Judge Emmet Sullivan ordered Flynn’s former Covington and Burling lawyers to appear in court to receive a lecture on ethics from the senior legal ethics counsel for the District of Columbia Bar. While Sullivan’s order expressed concern only over Covington and Burling’s delay in providing Flynn’s new attorney, Sidney Powell, access to his complete legal file, given recent revelations, one must wonder whether Sullivan is equally concerned that a conflict of interest existed in Covington and Burling’s representation of Flynn. Tuesday’s order followed a briefing by Powell and...

No proof Hillary, aides completed ethics training at State Department

There is no written evidence that Hillary Clinton or her top aides completed ethics training when they started working at the State Department, even though it’s required by federal law, according to a report released Thursday. Records show that just three of nine top Clinton aides took the mandated training for new employees. The records also suggest that neither Clinton nor seven top aides required to take subsequent annual training completed it. Many of the aides — including Cheryl Mills, Huma Abedin and Jake Sullivan — hold key positions with the Democratic nominee’s presidential campaign. The Trump campaign was quick...

DOJ fights federal judge's order for lawyers to attend ethics training

The Justice Department moved Tuesday to fight a federal judge’s order that its lawyers undergo mandatory ethics training, digging in after the DOJ was accused of misleading the courts over President Obama's immigration executive actions. In filings Tuesday, the department said the order would "far exceed the bounds of appropriate remedies" and would cost the department millions. U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen, of Texas, had issued the order earlier this month, after alleging DOJ attorneys misled him about the implementation of Obama’s executive orders on illegal immigrants.

In an immigration case in a Brownsville, Texas, federal court pitting Texas and 25 other states against the Obama administration, U.S. Department of Justice lawyers this week filed under seal their response to presiding U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen's May 19 sanctions order calling for them to undergo ethics training. In June, Hanen stayed that sanctions order until a scheduled Aug. 22 hearing. At the same time, Hanen had asked the DOJ lawyers to file by July 31 any points they wanted to make about "an appropriate sanction for the misrepresentations" and any other evidence "concerning the misrepresentations." In a...

State Department Finds No Evidence Clinton, or Top Aides, Completed Mandatory Ethics Training

The State Department was unable to find any records showing that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton completed ethics training courses, as required by federal law. Furthermore, no documentation was found for a bevy of top Clinton aides, including names familiar from the Clinton email scandal, such as Cheryl Mills, Huma Abedin, Jake Sullivan, Dennis Cheng, Anne Marie Slaughter, Phillippe Reines, Caitlin Klevorick, and Kris Bladerston. The lack of ethics documentation was revealed by the Republican National Committee, which had to squeeze the admission out of the State Department with a lawsuit, after the department failed to comply with a Freedom...

WASHINGTON ― Some of the Trump administration’s nominees have pushed back against the government’s ethics requirements with “a ferocity we’ve not previously seen,” Walter Shaub, the director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, told a top White House lawyer in an email this week. Shaub was responding to Reince Priebus, President Donald Trump’s chief of staff, who, when asked on Fox News Wednesday why the White House has been slow to fill key positions, claimed that many nominees were “sitting and waiting for OGE.” “That’s not the case,” Shaub wrote in an email sent to Stefan Passantino, the White...

Top government ethics official demands EPA probe Pruitt’s ethics controversies

A top government ethics official wants the Environmental Protection Agency to address any violations linked to Administrator Scott Pruitt’s spending habits, his condo lease from a lobbyist and his personnel decisions. In a letter dated Friday and released Monday, David J. Apol, the acting director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, took the atypical step of telling EPA officials that several recent ethics questions deserve further scrutiny. “Public trust demands that all employees act in the public interest, and free from any actual or perceived conflicts,” he wrote to Kevin Minoli, the EPA’s principal deputy general counsel and the...

Full title: Ethics Committee releases messages showing Tlaib asking campaign for personal money, as ethics probes announced The House Ethics Committee on Thursday released a trove of striking internal campaign communications sent in 2018 by Michigan Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib , in which Tlaib urgently requests money from her congressional campaign to defray personal expenses. The document dump was related to the committee's ongoing ethics probe into Tlaib, which the panel said on Thursday would be "expanded" based on a referral from the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE). Additionally, the Ethics Committee acknowledged for the first time on Thursday an...

Ex-White House ethics chief: Sarah Sanders tweet violates ethics laws

The former director of the Office of Government Ethics said on Saturday that White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s decision to tweet about being kicked out of a Virginia restaurant violated ethics laws. Sanders was asked to leave the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Va., on Friday night, but confirmed the incident in a Saturday morning tweet. The tweet also violated the endorsements ban, Shaub argued, since Sanders’s tweet was “an obvious corollary for discouraging patronage." Walter Shaub, the federal government's former top ethics watchdog, tweeted that Sanders's response, which was made from her official White House account, was...

President-elect Donald Trump's plan to let his sons run his business drew a biting attack Wednesday from the federal government's top ethics official, who said Trump is setting a bad example for the rest of government. Walter M. Shaub, Jr., director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, said in remarks at the Brookings Institution that Trump’s “perplexing” plan “doesn’t meet the standards that the best of his nominees are meeting and that every president in the past four decades has met.” Trump said he would retain ownership of his businesses but step back from running them, placing them in...

RF conducts transfer of heavy weapons in Ukraine and training militants in training camps

RF conducts transfer of heavy weapons in Ukraine and conducting additional training militants in training camps We have already drawn the attention of readers that Russia uses a false truce to rotate its forces and training militants of terrorist organizations DNI / LC in training camps in the Rostov region. (Russian Federation). Also, we learned information that under the settlement, and the nameless settlement Novoazovsk representatives of the Russian Armed Forces also train mercenaries from local militias, soon to transplant them on his armor, and by apparently move to the rotation. In this area there is a large base of...

Ethics vs. Ethics Codes

Ronald Reagan always advised Trust but Verify, which brings up the latest ways to regulate campaign spending. But in a free country, there should be no regulation at all. Let people say what they want to say and take the consequences -- whether they're offending the all too readily offended or running afoul of the libel laws. Call it a game of Truth or Consequences, only it's no game, as anyone who's ever been the target of a libel suit well knows. But all across these not always united states, politicians who call themselves reformers are busy drafting Codes of...

Training vs Qualifications in Gun Training

When you think of qualification as it applies to firearms it normally means that there is some sort of score involved, as well as time limits and conditions. The conditions, number of shots sequence etc are very defined and spelled out in detail. For example, 25 years ago when I was qualifying for my job as a military police officer, we had to do such things as wait for the buzzer then draw and fire two shots in six seconds sort of thing. There were reloads thrown in and even a barricade to work around. We still knew exactly what...

Yesterday’s hearing on Capitol Hill featuring FBI agent Peter Strzok quickly turned into a political firefight among lawmakers, but overall it was a damning illustration of the toxic culture that exists within the Washington, D.C., beltway. At one point, Oversight Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy confronted the former investigator over some anti-Trump texts he had sent. In 2016, after FBI lawyer Lisa Page asked Strzok if Trump would ever become the president, his response was, “No. No he won’t. We’ll stop it.” Republican committee members read a number of Strzok’s vitriolic texts about Donald Trump and his supporters, and at one...

Are There No Media Ethics On Hackers?
12/19/2014 7:27:06 AM PST · by Kaslin · 11 replies ^ | December 19, 2014 | Brent Bozell
The widespread reporting on hacked emails from Sony Pictures -- spurred by the upcoming release of an allegedly funny movie about assassinating North Korean despot Kim Jong Un -- might encourage some gloating from people who would like to bring Hollywood down a peg. But hold the schadenfreude. The media's ethics -- or seeming lack of ethics -- are troubling. Take CNN "Reliable Sources" host Brian Stelter in an interview with the program "Access Hollywood." His ethical position? Anything goes, as long as the journalists aren't the hackers. "It would be wrong and it would be illegal for the journalists...

Public Policy Without Ethics

Democratic voting naturally pressures politicians to endorse policies that will get them the most votes. But you almost never hear a politician admit that. Have you ever heard a politician say, “In the next election I will support whatever policies the polls tell me are most likely to get me elected”? I bet you haven’t. If a candidate for office did say something like that, almost everyone would find it distasteful. If you find this paradoxical, it’s a paradox with a long history. Our notions of democracy come from ancient Greece. Our notions of good government come from the same place. For Aristotle,...

The Ethics of Armed Self Defense

Discussions about the role of guns in society often founder under the weight of dueling statistics thrown out by both sides. I’d like to avoid the statistical food fight and base this article solely on the ethics of armed self-defense. How much do you value your life? Modern America has a strong pacifist streak that originated among some of our Christian denominations and spread to non-religious people, most notably during the 1960s. It is now associated with the liberal side of the political spectrum and with those who support strict gun control. It is easy to find people who say...

Okay. I’m trying to get us to — we need to talk about AI. We need to talk about future technology and how it’s going to integrate with our society. This is more important than anything else because this will affect your life in about five years and will definitely affect our children’s life. And there are really smart people — Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates — a long list of them, that are all saying, “This has got to be stopped.” This is not some Luddite stop technology. This is really smart people saying, “This is the end...
