The Federalist ^ | July 18, 2019 | Margot Cleveland
In yet another surprise development in the Michael Flynn case, on Tuesday Judge Emmet Sullivan ordered Flynn’s former Covington and Burling lawyers to appear in court to receive a lecture on ethics from the senior legal ethics counsel for the District of Columbia Bar. While Sullivan’s order expressed concern only over Covington and Burling’s delay in providing Flynn’s new attorney, Sidney Powell, access to his complete legal file, given recent revelations, one must wonder whether Sullivan is equally concerned that a conflict of interest existed in Covington and Burling’s representation of Flynn. Tuesday’s order followed a briefing by Powell and...

In an immigration case in a Brownsville, Texas, federal court pitting Texas and 25 other states against the Obama administration, U.S. Department of Justice lawyers this week filed under seal their response to presiding U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen's May 19 sanctions order calling for them to undergo ethics training. In June, Hanen stayed that sanctions order until a scheduled Aug. 22 hearing. At the same time, Hanen had asked the DOJ lawyers to file by July 31 any points they wanted to make about "an appropriate sanction for the misrepresentations" and any other evidence "concerning the misrepresentations." In a...

The Justice Department moved Tuesday to fight a federal judge’s order that its lawyers undergo mandatory ethics training, digging in after the DOJ was accused of misleading the courts over President Obama's immigration executive actions. In filings Tuesday, the department said the order would "far exceed the bounds of appropriate remedies" and would cost the department millions. U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen, of Texas, had issued the order earlier this month, after alleging DOJ attorneys misled him about the implementation of Obama’s executive orders on illegal immigrants.

No proof Hillary, aides completed ethics training at State Department

There is no written evidence that Hillary Clinton or her top aides completed ethics training when they started working at the State Department, even though it’s required by federal law, according to a report released Thursday. Records show that just three of nine top Clinton aides took the mandated training for new employees. The records also suggest that neither Clinton nor seven top aides required to take subsequent annual training completed it. Many of the aides — including Cheryl Mills, Huma Abedin and Jake Sullivan — hold key positions with the Democratic nominee’s presidential campaign. The Trump campaign was quick...

State Department Finds No Evidence Clinton, or Top Aides, Completed Mandatory Ethics Training

The State Department was unable to find any records showing that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton completed ethics training courses, as required by federal law. Furthermore, no documentation was found for a bevy of top Clinton aides, including names familiar from the Clinton email scandal, such as Cheryl Mills, Huma Abedin, Jake Sullivan, Dennis Cheng, Anne Marie Slaughter, Phillippe Reines, Caitlin Klevorick, and Kris Bladerston. The lack of ethics documentation was revealed by the Republican National Committee, which had to squeeze the admission out of the State Department with a lawsuit, after the department failed to comply with a Freedom...

WASHINGTON, Dec 18 (Reuters) - The U.S. House Ethics Committee has voted to release its report on former Republican Representative Matt Gaetz, CNN reported on Wednesday, saying the panel's findings could be made public within days as Congress prepares to adjourn for the holidays. The committee's probe centered on allegations against Gaetz of sexual misconduct with a teenage girl and drug use. Gaetz resigned from Congress in November after Donald Trump tapped him to be his attorney general, a bid the former lawmaker later dropped. The Ethics panel met earlier this month and voted secretly to release the report, CNN...

WASHINGTON ― Some of the Trump administration’s nominees have pushed back against the government’s ethics requirements with “a ferocity we’ve not previously seen,” Walter Shaub, the director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, told a top White House lawyer in an email this week. Shaub was responding to Reince Priebus, President Donald Trump’s chief of staff, who, when asked on Fox News Wednesday why the White House has been slow to fill key positions, claimed that many nominees were “sitting and waiting for OGE.” “That’s not the case,” Shaub wrote in an email sent to Stefan Passantino, the White...

A top government ethics official wants the Environmental Protection Agency to address any violations linked to Administrator Scott Pruitt’s spending habits, his condo lease from a lobbyist and his personnel decisions. In a letter dated Friday and released Monday, David J. Apol, the acting director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, took the atypical step of telling EPA officials that several recent ethics questions deserve further scrutiny. “Public trust demands that all employees act in the public interest, and free from any actual or perceived conflicts,” he wrote to Kevin Minoli, the EPA’s principal deputy general counsel and the...

Full title: Ethics Committee releases messages showing Tlaib asking campaign for personal money, as ethics probes announced The House Ethics Committee on Thursday released a trove of striking internal campaign communications sent in 2018 by Michigan Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib , in which Tlaib urgently requests money from her congressional campaign to defray personal expenses. The document dump was related to the committee's ongoing ethics probe into Tlaib, which the panel said on Thursday would be "expanded" based on a referral from the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE). Additionally, the Ethics Committee acknowledged for the first time on Thursday an...

The former director of the Office of Government Ethics said on Saturday that White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s decision to tweet about being kicked out of a Virginia restaurant violated ethics laws. Sanders was asked to leave the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Va., on Friday night, but confirmed the incident in a Saturday morning tweet. The tweet also violated the endorsements ban, Shaub argued, since Sanders’s tweet was “an obvious corollary for discouraging patronage." Walter Shaub, the federal government's former top ethics watchdog, tweeted that Sanders's response, which was made from her official White House account, was...

President-elect Donald Trump's plan to let his sons run his business drew a biting attack Wednesday from the federal government's top ethics official, who said Trump is setting a bad example for the rest of government. Walter M. Shaub, Jr., director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, said in remarks at the Brookings Institution that Trump’s “perplexing” plan “doesn’t meet the standards that the best of his nominees are meeting and that every president in the past four decades has met.” Trump said he would retain ownership of his businesses but step back from running them, placing them in...

The Fulton County Board of Ethics in Georgia confirmed Wednesday that it will take up multiple complaints against Trump prosecutor and District Attorney Fani Willis. In a letter, the county board said that it will “hold a special meeting” on possible Willis ethics violations on March 7, saying that “members of the public are welcome to attend.” It provided few details, but gave a list of items to be discussed in the meeting, including two specific complaints against Ms. Willis. According to the letter, Greg Mantell, with the Investigative News Service on Substack, is said to be the source of...

Cori Bush could be on the hook for many crimes as the Justice Department continues its investigation into her alleged misuse of over $750,000 in campaign funds for personal security. The progressive Squad member spent thousands on security services out of her campaign account since getting elected in 2020. That includes over $120,000 to her husband Courtney Merritts, according to her most recent campaign filings, who she married in February 2023. Kendra Arnold, executive director for ethics watchdog the Foundation for Accountability & Civic Trust (FACT) told DailyMail.com that 'a host of other possible charges' for Bush are possible.

Documents provided to UncoverDC from a whistleblower at the FBI reveal that the Bureau has combined the “Insider Threat” annual training module with the “Whistleblower” training module. This is as the Bureau takes further actions against legally recognized whistleblowers who have provided protected disclosures to Congress. Bureau sources tell UncoverDC that this is the first time FBI training has combined the two modules. It is perceived as a subtle but unmistakable sign from the FBI that protected whistleblower disclosures are considered in tandem with Insider Threat actions. “Unauthorized Disclosure” is now listed on the wheel of potential insider threats, something...

SALEM, Ore. — Oregon’s police training agency is one step closer to adding two more training classes to handle a hiring surge among law enforcement agencies statewide. The need to get new police officers trained is outpacing what the state can do. A group of state lawmakers approved more money Wednesday to add two training classes at the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training with a final vote expected Friday. The agency anticipates getting approval. Two extra classes would cover training for 80 new officers and deputies statewide. State law mandates that every new hire goes to Salem for...

ATLANTA — The Georgia Professional Standards Commission voted unanimously to remove words like “diversity”, “equity” and “inclusion” from teacher training rules Thursday. Starting July 1, teacher training programs are no longer required to discuss the words when preparing educators for the classroom. Teachers and civil rights advocates present for the vote called the commissioners “shameful.” “They know what they’re doing. Education is an institution that can either destroy or nurture future generations, but they don’t want strong generations. They want disempowered generations in pain under this white supremacist violence,” said Jonathan Peraza-Campos with the Intercultural Development Research Association. The words...
