<> October 24,1998. I had just returned from a round of golf with my son. He was mowing the lawn and I was drinking an ice cold Bass Ale. My wife was preparing the chicken I would later barbecue. It was a warm day, with temeratures in the low 80's, and the few billowy clouds scattered across the sky served only to heighten the brillance of the blue. Across the street, the neighbor's children were playing football on the lawn. Everything seemed right with the world.
It was then that I turned on CNN and I caught the announcement we had a new Pope, Pope Pius XIII. I don't think I will ever forget that day nor have I ever spoken with another Catholic who couldn't remember precisely what he was doing on that most Blessed day.<>

October 24,1998.Yes, what a day! How thrilling it was to speculate on the outcome of the conclave. Would it be the Capuchin, or the barber from Billings? How exciting to see the white smoke billowing up from the trailer house. What name would the new pope choose for himself. Ah. Pius XIII! The church is saved.
Have I ever brought up delusion in context with extreme trads? Why yes, I have.

As we revel in the glory of these memories, we must take care to remember though that, powerful as this great Pope is, Pius XIII is still bound liturgically. He can never forbid a priest to say the Tridentine.
