Another architectural assault on Our Lady?

Planned Sanctuary of Fatima

It is unclear whether Our Lady of Fatima ever revealed a secret such as this: "You shall build in my name a church that resembles a great flapjack griddle."

Yet here (last item) is the first-prize winner in an international architectural competition to design a new church* at Fatima in Portugal.

(And here, apparently, is an entry that didn't win.)

Compare to the current basilica. How long, O Lord?

New church at Fatima shrine

A new church with seating for 9,000 people is to be built at a Roman Catholic shrine where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared.

Thousands attend mass every week at Fatima in Portugal even though the present church seats just 900.

Three young shepherd children said the Virgin Mary revealed secrets to them there in 1917.

The church, which will be circular, is to cost about 45 million euros (£28.25 million), a statement said. It is expected to open within three years.

The project was awarded to Greek architectural company Tombazis, based in Athens, the Fatima authorities said.

Roughly 10,000 people regularly attend Sunday Mass at the shrine but the current basilica's capacity is just 900. Most worshippers stand outside.

Each year hundreds of thousands of people visit the shrine at Fatima, a town of 8,000 people lying 110 kilometres (about 70 miles) north of Lisbon.

More than 100,000 people from dozens of countries attend the annual May 13 commemorations, and more than 1 million have attended during papal visits.

I think you're being too harsh. I think it resembles some kind of new age country music instrument, not a griddle...

Looks to me like it belongs in Mecca, a 21st century sheltered Kaaba.

A New Super Deluxe, Extra Grande, George Foreman Grill!

The architect was stumped. Many a long hour had he spent on the new design, slowly contemplating what a truly holy symbol must contain, as he checked his George Foreman Grill, then...Eureka et viola!!!!

When George Foreman finally passes on, his legacy will not be as a boxer, humanitarian, servant of God, rancher, uncreative giver of names to his children, star of a genial ABC comedy or the Man Who Would Not Pay A Lot For This Muffler. It will be as the face of a modern-day religious icon — the Lean, Mean, Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine.

This white, waffle-iron-looking contraption is more than just an appliance. It is a device whose introduction into a conversation can turn any otherwise sane and educated human being into a babbling prophet of the Gospel of Grill, as this person tells the story of conversion from mere Weberite to Georgian, such as was described in the Old Testament: "And lo, Ezekiel dideth desire the burger of poultry, one that was bereft of fat, yet still tasteth juicy, and dideth not have the foul odor of briquettes. And lo, God senteth down from his Kingdom a Holy Grill, compact in size, simple in operation and easy to cleaneth, though on that note the Lord instructeth Ezekiel, 'My follower, it would pleaseth me for you to use the enclosed scraper rather than soap for best results.' And lo, Ezekiel cooketh the meat of the slain bird, which tooketh only 10 minutes, including five minutes of warm-up, and watcheth as fat drippeth onto the plate provided for such purpose of catching unpure liquids. And lo, Ezekiel gave thanks to his Father, saying, 'God, this tasteth great!'"

For some reason, I can't view your source code, but I think what you are probably doing is using the < a href=".... > instead of < img src="..... > to make your hyperlinks.

That is wierd looking! Very strange. OTOH the current shrine looks pretty ramshackle. That tower is not the best looking one I have ever seen. It looks like it's about to cruble or it has moisture damage. It needs a good sandblasting or something. But if I had my druthers I'd pick the old one and I would keep the statues for sure.

It is definitely strange that the Greek firm of Alexandros Tombazis would win with this design. Tombazis was born in Karachi, Pakistan, and his firm has designed some very beautiful and striking buildings in the Middle East, Cyprus,et al.

But this design for Fatima is pure dreck.

"strange that the Greek firm of Alexandros Tombazis would win with this design". Hey guys, it is perfectly simple! They had an open competition, to select the most ugly and inappropriate design. After going to a lot of trouble, they came up with this one. Who are you to say that it isn't the most hideous one on offer?

A friend asked me whether they are going to tear down the basilica. The answer is no, this does not seem to be their plan. If you click on the "(And here, apparently, is an entry that didn't win.)" in the article, it will take you to four sketches by one of the losing architects. The bottom sketch shows that the basilica and the new huge church will be at opposite ends of the plaza.

The new design doesn't seem to blend in aesthetically with the existing environment/adjacent neighborhood buildings. They all appear to be red tiled roofed and Itallian rennaisance to mediterranean styled structures. Placing the Staple's Center in the midst of that seems to alter the local local just a tad.
