The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

Agreed. But emulating Jews isn't the goal. Emulating Christ is. Would Jesus eat pork if he were alive today? Oh wait...he is! :-)

Sure. Do you think if He came to a Steeler game he'd turn down some Kielbasa? What if He went to a family's house on pork chop night? Do you think He'd turn his nose up, or do you think He'd welcome the hospitality of His hosts?

The point I am trying to make is that Jesus taught that it is the matters of our hearts, not our stomachs that are important. If circumcision on the literal flesh has been replaced with "circumcision of the heart," in the same way kosher eating in the flesh is now "keeping kosher in your heart."

My point has always been that it's not "jewish". For example Noah knew about clean and unclean animals. Abel offered sacrifices of clean animals. Scripturally they were never done away with. But I know you have tradition that says they were.

These were the Ancestors of the Jews. They may have had this revealed to the earlier than the giving of the Law. Certainly not all peoples had this distinction.

So who the heck is playing in the Big 12 Championship anyway?

Did you see the Backyard Brawl? Pitt liked having 4 tries to tie the game from the 20 with a minute left and failing against Miami so much that they reprised it for the WVU game.

I am reminded of the old saw that if you ask three Jews a question of theology, you'll get four different answers.

Yes, and they say the same thing about economists, don't they?

Well, this morning was fun. We got about 4 inches of snow starting early in the morning and it's still coming down. It's one of those peculiar storms where the farther south you go, the more snow that is expected. Washington, DC is supposed to get completely hammered. And those folks don't know how to handle it.

I like how when the roads are really treacherous, traffic signals become optional. If there's nobody there, I'm not stopping my momentum completely for a neighborhood stop sign. And there ain't a jury in the world that would convict you for it.

Ice and snow make all traffic laws irrelevant. :o) Unfortunately though ... down here it also turns people into idiots. Dallas was spared the ice this time, thank God. The only good ice in Dallas is in a glass of iced tea in the summer or in American Airlines Center (where the Stars are still undefeated so far this season). Oh ... and how 'bout them Mavs?!

We had some ice and snow yesterday. When we left to go to church last night the sanding crews had not showed up anywhere. We are 28 miles from the church we are attending. we made it about 1/2 way then were stopped by all the people in ditches and fender bended accident. We had to give it up and landed up just meeting the kids to eat. This morning the sun is shining bright but temps are at 20...buuurrrrr:)

Advent Weekday

First Reading:
Responsorial Psalm:
Gospel:

Isaiah 26:1-6
Psalm 118:1, 8-9, 19-21, 25-27
Matthew 7:21, 24-27

Indeed, the Church, though scattered throughout the whole world, even to the ends of the earth, having received the faith from the apostles and their disciples. . . guards [this preaching and faith] with care, as dwelling in but a single house, and similarly believes as if having but one soul and a single heart, and preaches, teaches and hands on this faith with a unanimous voice, as if possessing only one mouth.

 -- St. Iranaeus, Adversus haereses

A story is told of St. Jerome, the famous biblical scholar, as he struggled to understand a difficult passage in Scripture. After weeks of trying to glean spiritual wisdom from one section of Paul's letter to the Romans, the temperamental scholar finally had enough. In exasperation, he hurled the sacred text across the room and shouted, "Paul, you don't want to be understood!"

Haven't we all felt that way at some point when we've tried to hear from the Lord? Of course, Jerome knew that the problem isn't with God's desire or ability to speak, but with our weakness in listening. God does want to be understood. He wants us to hear his voice clearly. Why else would he have created us with hearts that yearn for him? We were destined from the beginning of time to be hearers of the word of God.

At first blush, it might seem that hearing God's voice should happen "naturally," without much effort on our part. When this doesn't happen, we might be tempted to think that it's because God isn't being very clear. Yet, even though we were created to hear God, it's incumbent upon us to put time and energy into developing our sensitivity to his voice. Practically speaking, if you wanted to buy a new sound system, you'd assume that the more money you invested, the more clearly you'd hear your music. It only makes sense that the more time and energy you invest in your relationship with God, the better you'll hear his voice.

Spend time listening carefully to the Lord. Start by taking the little things he's placed on your heart--things you already understand--and put them into practice. Perhaps a Scripture passage comes to mind, or perhaps you remember God urging you to pray for someone in need. Whatever the case, don't put it off. Follow God's leadings. Then continue spending time listening for his voice in Scripture, at Mass, and in prayer. God may even speak to you in some unexpected ways. Listen carefully. Let this Advent be a time of sincere effort to hear God's voice and build our lives on the solid foundation of his word.

"Lord, smash the resistance in us that prevents us from hearing you. Come down, O mighty one, and make your dwelling place in our lives. We want to hear your voice."

----------

God bless.

Washington, DC is supposed to get completely hammered. And those folks don't know how to handle it.

And the networks are all hysterical. They've got their reporters out in the field breathlessly commenting on the situation. SNOW! ON THE EAST COAST METROPLEX! IN DECEMBER!

Eight inches of snow in Milwaukee doesn't generate the same sort of coverage.

Well, you are south of the Mason-Dixon line. Well south. The first year my older sister lived near DC she was amused cause they got half an inch of snow and they closed all the businesses down and sent everyone home. Some idiot slid into her car. This for half an inch of snow!

I'll take the cold and snow over the ice and sleet anyday. There are advantages to being a bit farther north. We've been below freezing for a week, which means you don't have to deal with a daily runoff and re-freeze.

hey Becky. That's pretty cold, I hope you have horse blankets. There's a couple horses I see on my way to work and the one is pretty old. He's been wearing a blanket for the last week or so.

I grew up out in the country, and earned my stripes tooling around on two lane country roads that were ice-covered most of the winter. I quickly learned that you can drive as fast on ice as on dry pavement. The only thing you must take into account is the reduced coefficient of friction. You have to allow yourself a correspondingly longer time to accelerate and decelerate. Of course you only want to do this if you are the only car on the road. If someone pulls out in front of you, you are SOL.

I long for the days of my youth when the TV people didn't make a big deal about things. And when every forecast of sno didn't cause a milk, bread, toilet paper frenzy.

Cut to the local weather yahoo, out in the parking lot:

"As you can see [picks up snow] the snow is very [powdery/wet/etc.]. "

Cut to ruler stuck in snow, next to SUV tire:

"We already have [x] inches and it's [still coming down/tapering off]. We can expect [y] more inches before daybreak. Morning rush should be [smooth/hairy]"

Cut to reporterette in cute hat at turnpike booths:

"Traffic on the turnpike is [moving steadily/creeping along]. State police caution drivers to [allow extra time/ stay off the highways]. "

Cut to PennDOT depot, salt trucks being filled up:

"Crews here are working around the clock"

Yes, thank you. The plows being out is not news. The plows all broken down or on strike is news.

And don't forget those "Winter Driving Tips" like:

Exercise caution
Have good tires (duh)
Avoid unnecessary trips
Give youself extra room to stop

Then there's the idiots I saw this morning. Hmmm, let's see the major US highway is covered in snow and quite slippery. There are two plow trucks coming the other direction, executing a U turn to plow and salt the direction I'm travelling in.

Do I:

Hurry up at the light and get ahead of them
or
Let them in front of me so I have a good surface to drive on?

It's tricky, I know.

We've been below freezing for a week

Same here. We won't see the north side of 30 degrees until at least the weekend. Slightly colder than normal, but nothing extreme. I remember one December we had a long stretch with highs around zero and lows -15 to -20. Other years its in the 40s and 50s.

The unusual thing this November and December so far has been the dryness. We had a little snow early November, and next to nothing since then. No rain either.

I have a blanket on one of my horses, only because I haul him in the trailer after being rode and he gets sweaty (yea!) under the saddle. So I worry that he might get chilled in the trailer coming home.

The other one I don't put a blanket on. Horses grow great winter coats. If they have a shed to get in out of the wind and wet they can manage without blankets, especially if they are fed good. They are actually better off without blankets, their own coats are plenty.

OK, I didn't know that. The horse I'm talking about is quite old and feeble, he was "rescued" from some type of bad situation. I know this only cause my wife stopped one day with Sarah to get a look at the horses.

West of the what? ;o)

Seriously, the only reason I had to ask is because the Big 12 has been pretty competitive this year, and I wasn't sure who ended up on top.

The BCS looks once again to screw up college football. With Ohio State bound for the title game, it appears that Iowa should be the Big 10 representative in the Rose Bowl. But they would have to get in a BCS game as an at-large team, meaning that the BCS isn't obliged to take them, and even if they do get in they could end up in the Orange Bowl instead of the Rose Bowl. The Orange Bowl gets to pick before the Rose Bowl if Miami wins and goes to the championship game.

By winning the ACC, Florida state gets an automatic bid to a BCS game, even though they have four losses! Meanwhile, USC has been the hottest team in the country, but could still get shut out of a BCS game unless UCLA beats Washington State. Worse, USC could end up getting passed over for an at-large bid in favor of Notre Dame, even though they crushed Notre Dame in their head-to-head matchup, even though they are ranked 4th in the BCS poll, and Notre Dame is ranked 10th.

Projected BCS matchups:

Fiesta: Miami (Fla.) vs. Ohio State
Orange: Oklahoma vs. Notre Dame
Sugar: Florida State vs. Georgia
Rose: USC or Washington State vs. Iowa

Nebraska? Sorry, you need to finish third in the Big 12 in order to go the the championship game. Fourth in the North ain't gonna cut it. The 7-6 'Huskers look to play in the Citrus Bowl vs. Clemson.

Give us a playoff system, please.
