Until around WWII, especially black preachers made a name for themselves with their lurid and realistic depictions of Hell. A good one “could have their congregation smelling brimstone, and feeling the flames licking the underside of the floorboards.”

And to their credit, many sinners were at least temporarily redeemed and lived better lives for a while.
