Same-Sex Civil Unions 'Good and Helpful to Many', Says Pope Francis
Euro News ^ | 9/17/21

Pope Francis has ended his trip to Slovakia by speaking out on abortion and same-sex marriage.

During his flight back to Rome he said "abortion is homicide".

But he backed away from denying communion to politicians who support abortion rights.

He also spoke about marriage and said it is a sacrament between a man and woman, but added that same-sex civil unions are good and helpful to many people.

The pontiff said the Catholic Church “doesn’t have the power to change a sacrament as it was instituted by the Lord”, but he supported civil laws that try to help “those who have a diverse sexual orientation”.

He said: "If a homosexual couple wants to lead a life together, the State has the possibility to give them safety, stability, inheritance; and not only to homosexuals but to all the people who want to live together (in a civil union)".

“This does not at all mean that they have to be condemned: No, they are our brothers and sisters. But marriage is a sacrament, between a man and a woman''.

You know, I became a Catholic for my husband. We’ve been married for 31 years. He doesn’t really want me intimately anymore. Not even sure why he wants to stay married; he doesn’t even want me to live with him. Once I asked him, “Why do you still want to remain married?” He said, “Because you make me laugh.”

I guess that was a nice compliment.

In any case, I committed an indiscretion and took a communion wafer and then immediately realized I should not have, not without a confession and penance.

It seems to me that pro-”choice” politicians should have some sense of decency to not even ask for communion until their consciences are clear.

Please don’t flame me for having admitted to a sin.

LOL! Post of the century! VERY well said.

People tend to forget that. When you don’t live in the world, how are you supposed to know anything about it? He lives in luxury that none of us could ever afford.

I may have to switch back to Presbyterianism, in which I was raised. :)

Does he not agree that:

homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered.’ (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Persona humana, 8). They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved?”

If not, he needs to give up his office immediately.

You: The pope has never been married.
.
Me: Irrelevant. God's law does not depend upon individual experience.
.
You: Natural law does.
.
Oxford Languages: a body of unchanging moral principles regarded as a basis for all human conduct.
.
Me: Nope. Try again.

Me? I'm not the one who thinks morality in marriage cannot be known by single people because . . . Natural Law?!

In which of your six years of theology. Latin, greek Hebrew philosophy did you learn that?

You put words into people’s mouths.
You apparently do not know what you are talking about neither.
It is hilarious! Thanks for the great laugh.

Yes, and by crude analogy it is akin to placing the gas pump in the exhaust pipe, though even less compatible. While we have all misused our brains, hands, feet and other God-given instruments and thus need redemption, promoting clear perverse abuse of what God has given is indefensible.

In response to an article titled:

you wrote:

implying that experiential knowledge of marriage is required to know if homosexual acts are good and helpful.

Your words (from your own mouth): https://freerepublic.com/focus/religion/3995973/posts?page=7#7

You don’t know what you’re talking about, Mr. Academic.
