NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA

A r t Q u a l i t y

The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art: this is The Bible in Paintings, not "Great Paintings" nor even "Good Paintings." Indeed, occasionally photographs actually illustrate the text. So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don't need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby's. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm always asking the Holy Spirit to guide.

Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material, licentious or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.

T e x t S e q u e n c i n g

The Protestant Canon does not (for several reasons) follow a strictly chronological sequence. There are many examples where, for God's good purposes, stories are told out-of-order. Nevertheless, for the sake of simplicity, clarity, and my sanity, I have chosen to proceed linearly and methodically from Genesis onward, illustrating each Bible passage as we come to it. Where two passages cover the same incident I omit the second telling, excepting the four Gospels which I am treating synoptically. Now, onward!

P a c i n g

The pace here may seem appallingly snail-like to those eager to see their favorite events illustrated. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence: if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic (but where there is little or no art, that Bible passage goes untold here).

Then, there is the human element: this is not actually a daily series, because I can only research, compose, edit and post five or six of these installments weekly. And because I only get to do this series once, I'm taking my time, chiefly by posting everything; if I find lots of art, I don't cherry-pick some and discard the rest. Rather, I line up all of them and then sort them into manageable bunches, often resulting in multiple days' episodes of the same story. Obviously, I like being thorough. Were you in a big hurry?

The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing—this is His project, after all. And always remember:
love, joy, peace, patience kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness & self-control is a fruit of the Spirit!

That is absurd You refer to Sodom and Gomorrah in your post and in response I post a reply on the same and yet you assert that has no relevance to what preceded it? Just what is your objection anyway? You thread is about artistic depictions of Biblical events, and thus I would think you would welcome one even if you had not mentioned the specific events. It is that you do not like the message that goes with the picture?

I do welcome comments about every aspect of Bible art; two days ago another poster responded on the Noah's Ark thread--not about that thread, but directly on it. That is another option for commenters.

It was a link as part of your list of pages of a series that you posted, not a mere footnote, and thus you should welcome any comment or supplement to them, and your response was not a mere inquiry, but the flavor of rebuke, that why did you post this "since it has no readily apparent connection to anything on this thread." Yet you expressed no objection to a picture of two mermaid-type creatures of Chester Cathedral.

All relevant to Biblical themes and art. No copyright either.

But this protest has worked out for the good of me finding even more paintings of Biblical themes by the exceptional Martin.

Sorry: I was in a rush and had just posted that image someplace else so it was handy, and I did not think posting Biblically themed art (on a very major event) on a thread about Biblically themed art really needed explanation, while you seemed to be upset by this, and have yet to express any appreciation of these many profound paintings, even though your thread sees few responses.

First, please forgive the inconsiderate way I phrased my initial inquiry--it was thoughtless, and I offer no excuse. My God, especially through Ephesians 4:29, and my wife, through those same 44 years, have trained me to do better than that.

My threads' response counts are a matter of complete indifference to me, because I conduct this series not for the crowd but for my Lord; my job is to deliver to Him the loaves and fishes, but it is then His responsibility to deliver them to whomever He wishes. So, if you were making sport of me by alluding to them, you didn't score there.

I have refrained altogether from commenting on the pictures you have posted because you, not they, are my first and only priority while this discord and lack of rapport between us exists. Pictures are utterly unimportant to me compared to your value.

What I meant was seeing as there were few responses then objection to my addition of Biblical art to a thread/series of Biblical art should not have found objection on that basis but welcomed.

Thanks but they go together. In fact as part of my work in ministry, by the grace of God, I make evangelistic signs, which explains my focus on themes of eternity, mainly using the "Bridge" poster ($4.00 plus shipping) which I enhance to help souls "get the picture" that they are headed for one of two eternal destinations, and that what they do with Jesus Christ determines that, and thus repent and believe. The product image below is missing part of the left side:

I like evangelistic art, and there is little like the above, and I do not really like much of the medieval art which I perceive were done by religious but (usually) lost souls.

I was somewhat familiar with Martin and have posted two or three of his works, but I've not surveyed his portfolio. He certainly isn't afraid of the grand panorama, more so than anyone I know of.

Evangelical signs is an interesting and laudable ministry. I'm sure there's an interesting story there, which everyone in heaven will be eager to hear.
